 Racheeta nani:
2 most have Bank Accounts when you are in US

(1) Bank of America--It's one of the largest bank, very nice and safe online banking. Most Nepalese have BofA so transfering funds between two of your friends would be lot easier (to pay rent or to pay for your goat meat share !)

(2) Wells Fargo--Another well known bank in US....Most folks also have Wells Fargo. Incase they didn't have BofA, transferring funds between wells fargo customer is also Free.

Good Luck

Hello US Returnee,
You suggest 2 banks. But do know they have service fee/charge if u don't have direct deposit.
Most of bank charge monthly service fee.
Thx,

Yes I understand they have service fees.
You can either have a direct deposit or keep $1500 and you can avoid monthly fees.
But they are some bank accounts which will come handy most of the time !

I have always loved bank of america. they even gave me credit card when no one was willing. it helped to build my credit history.
student checking account is free.
after 5+ years the account will be changed to my access checking and that will also be free if you maintain a balance of 1500 dollars.

The quetion is way too vague. What do you mean by "best" checking account? There are different types of checking accounts catering to different needs of different people in each bank. For Eg: I opened my free BOA Checking account 5 years ago and it was free. I used to be a student back then. 5 years on, it's still free. Then I was lured into opening a Chase account as they had a promotion going on. Meeting the requirement of setting up direct deposit of more than 500/paycheck for the first 6 months of opening an account would mean I'd get 200 bucks deposited into my account. I closed the account after 6 months as banking with two separate banks was unnecessary back then. I started banking with Chase again as I had various Credit Cards with them and they also had a promotion going on again, $150 for same terms and conditions.

So it all depends. Some banks offer free checking accounts. Some don't. More often than not, banks are more lenient towards you when you're a student. Else, most banks will charge you monthly fees.

I've been using Bank of America for past 8 years..and I've found their online services better than any other banks. I have second bank accout with Wells Fargo though I hardly use it..they have come up with some crappy fees.. will probably close it soon.... I guess Bank of America is the best option... if you could avoid unnecessary fees, etc during sign up...
