ask for some work man. Your idleness shows your unethusiasm which is going to haunt you down the road. Just ask for some work rather than just sitting idle. They will assign you at least some task and will let you know if they do not have anything for you if they don't have. thanks.

DO NOT JUST SIT IDLE. ASK FOR SOMETHING. THIS (IN MY OPINION) SHOWS YOU THAT YOU ARE A ROOKIE.

Thanks for the suggestion, Laalmon.
But i have asked for work several times and it didn't help. BTW, i have 4+ years experience. This has happened to me for the first time.

Yes..state jobs are slow with no hard deadlines..I have been working at state job..while job is fun and easy if you are new consultant with no experience (as i was when i started) it gets kind of boring as you learn stuff and gain experience since there is nothing much new happening and in IT you need to keep yourself active...

Hey Cybro,
Looks like we are in the same boat and yeah you are correct about everything you said. NO hard deadlines is one issue plus I am here to migrate the enterprise tools which is moving forward in tortoise speed. I wrote few scripts for a team in the beginning and thats it , all i am doing now is maintaining it. I am keeping myself busy learning the new tools we are supposed to migrate to but i don't see the migration happening any sooner. Change in management has also become another issue.
Basically, you are right about keeping yourself active and thats what i am doing now.
@zeepa, I am not Ram.

Thanks,

--peace

I was in state Job in around 2008, it used to be slow some days and too much of crap some day, after that I did fed contract for while , we had decent work there, the freaking federal contracting company wanted please their boss so they keep getting job, other wise that would have been chill job, after that I worked for giant corporate, I used to get dumped with 300-400 mails in a day, I could do nothing more then reading and replaying email attending calls and meetings, such a mess. So moral of story , if everything else is good never quit job cause it's slow and don't have work. Here very few people really work, and most act like they are working ( doesn't apply for young tech companies)

With the permission of your supervisor/team leader (or whoever you are directly reporting to) see if you can learn new skills/tools within the scope of your job description/assignment as some of peps have suggested in previous posts.

Invite your immediate co-workers if they are in the same boat, they might appreciate your outreach effort. Showing enthusiasm is the key phrase here. Work-load will vary from time to time, but showing consistent enthusiasm will pay off in the end.

I looked for another work in private company and now i am in higher position and more responsibility. I would n't suggest working in State project long term if you really want to build your career. Its pretty slow most of the time and nothing new to learn form work.
