This dude was sitting behind me on a plane, a nepali freshman studying in some college in minnesota, he was returning home after 1 year of US stay in his summer break. He was trying to small talk with this american sitting by his side who was visiting nepal for trekking. I couldn't help but listen their conversation in his heavy accented nepali-english. This freshman was telling the tourist to his face that americans are fat except for people in new york, they only eat cheese, many of them are racist and other general stereotypes. The tourist was trying to give a clue that he is stereotyping by saying there are bad apple everywhere, nope the nepali bhai didnt get it and rambled on about his limited US experiences, white girls not paying attention to him and all that. He was blatently asking personal questions such as how much you make, what was your grade in college and all that. Meanwhile i was cringing so hard in the front seat.
When the tourist said he was backpacking around nepal to discover himself since he recently quit medical school and was intereted in pursuing philosophy when he returns, this nepali dude lost his shit. Really, r u serious, why would you do that and many other personal questions followed.
The answer was simple: Freedom
Which takes a lifetime to achieve.
