I'm planning to move to Houston from midwest? Can anyone living in Houston give some insight on general cost of living in Houston?

I lived in Houston for 4 years. It's a great place and relatively cheap for a metro. Again, the cost depends on which area of Houston you live (Houston is Big! Like REALLY BIG.), but it's relatively affordable compared to North East. I used to live close to the downtown in the Houston Medical Center (near Rice, UH, NRG Stadium), for a good two bedroom (2 bth) condo , I was paying 1000 in rent. I have had relatives move to Houston from Virginia so they could afford to buy a house.

I had a 1 bedroom apartment in Southwest side of Houston couple of years ago. Free electricity and water. Washer and dryer in the room. 24 hrs security at the gate. Pretty quiet, gated community in the middle of not that good neighborhood. I paid less than $800 only. There are lots of cheap apartments, but lots of trouble too. If you cook at home, food is cheap. You might hate the traffic though! lol

@True Nepali, I have been living in Houston for few years now and think i am qualified to answer this. There are different types areas and apartments here, from cheap ass to decent to expensive. I have lived in all 3 categories. If finance is your concern, you may live in Chimney Rock, Lantern, Rampart etc or similar but your experience will be horrible. If you have a family, i do not recommend living in these shitty apt complexes at all. There is always a break-in, loot and not enough parking area. My multiple friends were robbed in these apartments. Yes, you will find many Nepali families living here but if you have means and options, do not live in these or on this part of town. Also lot of people i find tend to think Houston and overall Texas is cheap but it comes down to where or how you live. I pay $1582 currently for 2 bedroom apartment (1205 sqrft), i used to pay $1140 for 1 bedroom near downtown and it was awesome. Security & maintenance was top notch, i never had issue. I lived for a while in shitty apartments and i always had issues. Houston is big, really big so where you will live may depend on your school or job location too. Let me know if you have any questions.
