Today's Chatpat: September 26th, 2023
1. Yesterday, the media reported that Nepal is facing a shortage of doctors, nurses and other health professionals and then a gang of a patient's relatives decide to attack the doctors at Manipal Hospital in Pokhara. In the past month alone, doctors have been attacked in Hetauda, Chitwan and Lamjung. As usual, the doctors will stop medical services around the country while the government will promise them better security and punishment for those who engage in such attacks and things will be normal for a week before such incidents flare up in the country again.
2. Our PM has met the PM of China and is proud to tell us that many agreements have been signed with the Chinese. The reality is that most of the agreements are for providing help in preparing future partnerships instead of any real concrete benefits to our nation. Well, it was a nice vacation for the PM, his daughter and his near and dear ones. They had fun in New York and now in China while the country faced attacks on medical professionals, strike by government school teachers and the President gave us a nice gift on Constitution Day by pardoning a murderer, who happens to be a local gunda from Nepalgunj, who was affiliated with the youth wing of the Nepali Congress.
3. A former minister, Ram Kumar Shrestha has been found guilty of corruption by our courts. He faces six months in prison and fine of nearly a crore. Shrestha used to be a government hakim and got to be our mantri when Khil Raj Regmi was appointed the caretaker PM by Baburam back then. If we were to really investigate our hakim sahebs, netas and jholeys then almost a million people would be behind bars and the country could recover tens of billions of dollars, maybe enough to clear our national debt.
4. The former King's visit to Bhaktapur is going viral in social media. As usual, the RPP takes credit for it like the Congressis do with BP and Ganesh Man and the UMLs do it with Madan Bhandari. I really don't know about the Maoists, but with our PM paying tribute to Mao in China, he still thinks Mao is cool while the Chinese people think of Mao in similar vein as they think of Gandhi in India. It's good for the bank notes and everybody thinks, if it weren't for them, their country would have been far better decades and decades ago but won't say it loud in public.
5. The nation is paying billions more as more than 300,000 beneficiaries have been added to the 3+ million folks who receive some form of social security allowances. The previous Deuba government had lowered the senior citizen allowance age to 68 from 70. The late former PM Man Mohan Adhikari began the scheme in the 90s and successive governments have increased the allowance whenever the election season is around the country and is now Rs 4,000 per month for senior citizens.
