Predictions:

1) Girija et al (all the Congressi netas) will say nothing against these charges.
Removal of Gagan Thapa means less competition for all of them. It was Girija who unceremoniously threw out Gagan from his elected post for reasons Girija NEVER
made public.

2) UML et al will say nothing too.

3) Lawyers at the Nepal Bar Association will say nothing. The new Chief Justice is already charming them by saying all the 'right' things.

4) Nepal's famously and sadly fractured human rights community members (MOST -- and NOT all (for there some really good people too) -- of whom are ex-political karya-kartas who, in their 30s and 40s, found nice well-paying and vaguely respectable NGO-ish jaagir in the human rights field) will say nothing against this charge-sheet.

5) Journalists will continue to report stories about Gagan -- but more as 'personality' stories in the vein of 'hey-he-is-my-friend-from-the-TC-days' than as serious,
thoughtful and probing profiles.

6) Meantime, free speech continues to get assailed in Nepal.

Surely, it's time to start an ACLU-style Nepal Civil Liberties Union, and raise strategic
hell throughtout the world (by use of fund-raising, money, contacts and the media).

Sedition charge filed against Gagan Thapa

KOL Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 14 - The government on Sunday filed a sedition charge sheet against Gagan Thapa, the former general secretary of Nepal Students Union at the Special Court for shouting anti-king slogans at one of the mass meetings held by a civic society recently.

A three-year jail term and a fine of Rs 3000 have been demanded in the charge sheet filed against him as per clause 4 (1) of the Offence Against State Act-1989. (hb)

1 & 2) I do not care and do not expect these political leaders to support Gagan, becuase these leaders are just self centered corrupt leaders ... they are Leeches who are sticking on to the party president chair and sucking the blood of own karyakartas.... Gagan is fighting for true democracy... that has no influence of monarch/corrup leader or maoist... While Girija/Makune are just fighting for share in blood monarchy is sucking from nepal....

3 & 4) I wonder why Nepal Bar Association/Human Right organizations are quiet about this false charge... But let me give a brief flash back to Subodh Pyakurel, Sambhu Thapa and Gopal Siwakoti that... if this illegal govt. can charge Gagan with anti-nationalist charge same can be done to all 3 of them.... I am for it because I believe ONLY the leadership of the civil society has got the moral prowess to-
1. Lead a republican revolution because all other parties/folds lack the trust of ppl inside and/or legitimitacy to the external powers in the outside.

2. Interim administration: To accomodate all the warring parties and pursue them for a new democratic constitution is possible only through a neutral leadership, sth like civil society with the help of United Nations etc. Otherwise, even constitution assembly or whatever alike will again be played upon, messed and crapped up. Also the leadership of the civil society is less likely to have more vested interests than the leadership of a particular party or a foreign mediator.

2. Restructuring (refabrication-?) of the administrative units like federal system or regional autonomy or whatever is a necessity for a better future. However, the current parties/folds are either visionless or pro-status-quo or aim to distort communal harmony. Only the civil society can provide an unambigious and agreeable agenda and hence a solution.

3. Command of Army: Both the current buaurocray as well as the army need to be restructured. Plus, the Maoist PLA should be integrated into the national army. "Disarming Maoists" is just an insane dream. (My personal wish is declare nepal a peace zone and dedicate its army to UN peacekeeping missions etc because never in my lifetime will the national army of nepal be able to challange the chinese and indians, so better fence our borders and reform the army to sth like development corps or UN volunteers rather than keep feeding them and buying them INSAS rifles). Anyway,no particular party can be an agreeable command to the two warring parties, so leadership of the civil society is a must.

4. One of the current problems is of extreme politicization. Professions, workers, students, almost every one from every walk of life seems to be "parti-fied" to a political party/fold and the party-interests appear to dominate national interests. A revolution led by the civil society might reduce, if not eliminate, this "party-culture".

I am for such a wave of pro-civil campaign.

This looks like a clash of civilization (very similar to the war on terrorism and Jehad). Snake bite (presumbly, a Neo-Western Nepali) seems to represent the western and Dalli Resham/Husspuppy from the Estern side. Both have valid arguments bsed upon which camp they belong. One may need to decide which camp s/he belongs and needs to respect each other. Isn't it possible not to be on either sides and make a middle way?
