I need to buy an anti virus software. Currently I am using Norton Internet Security which is about to expire. So I wanted to ask you people if it is better to subscribe the internet security online or buy a cd? Which one is the best value for money? Can you guys please suggest me if there are reliable online sites where I can buy the suggested anti viru cd, if that is the best solution. Please help.

don't buy any anti-virus. just go to - www.avast.com and download their home version of anti-virus. great anti-virus software and have been using for more than a year now with no problems. it updates automatically everytime there is an update. best thing it is free, and considered by many as the best anti-virus these days. Remember orton slows down your computer signifcntly. Avast will however slow down your internet for first 5-10 minutes of your complete computer boot.

Thanks sujan. I heard when you download free softwares online, you tend to get lot of unwanted craps so i was skeptical about it. I do not know the risks and process of booting and that's why I may be risk messing up my computer. So that do you think is the best solution? Download form avast? Can I just download the software and restart my pc? Please elaborate.

i haven't have any problems. you have to give them your email of somekind so that they can send you the key, so that you can use it forever. make sure when you register, you uncheck all button that asks you if want to receive email in the future. but you have to check automatic update. i think the major problem with avast and most anti-vrius that also scans trojan horses and worms have a problem. that is, it finds that the system restore file as a trojan horse. so, that may be quite annoyin gbecause win xp home, tends to save a restore almost everytime there is avast update. and every time this happens, avast sees it as a threat, that you may want to ignore. but, i haven't have that problem, since avast downloaded a patch (automatically after a few days). i can still system restore my win xp. i mean, avast home 4.6 is not as great as some professional versions, but for something that is free, i found it worth a use. The best thing about avast is, the automatic update is served by 7 servers in the 6 continents, so whenever there a new virus, the local servers locates them immediately allowing avast to prevent it from spread into your computer. no other providers do this, which i think is pretty unique.

milani, i am not questioning your ingenuity but just a question because i went to the AVG website and saw that they are providing anti-virus for linux. i hope you'll know that linux doesn't have viruses or worms... so, i don't know if i can trust their windows version as well..

you have register only if you want to use this beyong 30 days without that anoying 'please register' pop up before the program starts. but, the registration is for the key that they'll give. i gave them my gmail email, and gmail gets their email sometimes, but goes to junk mail folder so, i don't have to worry because gmail has 2.6 gb of storage. if you need a gmail, pls write here again and i can post some invites.

virus on a linux server is different. they do not destroy the machine, but replicate itself to other people via email. but if you are running a linux workstation, it shall never be affected, because linux doesn't use chips registry as the nt, dos and mac os does. they treat eveything as files, so viruses cannot infect anything, because they have to reside in some kind of registered memory. linux does not have regitered memory, they are only files. even the moniter, keyboard mouse, printer, hard drive floppies.. etc.. everything are files.

My vote is for AVG as well. I tried mcaffee, then norton and then norton corporate edition. all worked for few months and then started creating problems plus they use a lot of memory and resources in computer. Then I tried AVG and no problems so far. AVG is a small program and works great.

I find most Virus software intrusive. I would go for a good firewall or router firewall!Norton is such a pain in the butt I won't put it on any of my machines at least go innoculate, its alot less intrusive and free!

Been using AVG Free edition for couple of years now. Really really great. I install it on my clients' computer also. Norton is too overloaded.

Thanks sujanks, sajhabusaima, blah and milani and everyone who took time to suggest me. I thought AVG does not require me to register and i downloaded it, however it does ask for the license number after i finished dowloading. I went thru the link that milani provided here. Now what should i do in order to activate it and how do i register it? May be i need to download the trial version instead of regular which we need to buy? Can u guess, how is it working? sajhabusaima, somehow i could not download the norton thing. Do i need to register?
