Which schools do you recommend for PHD in Economics? I know the top graduate schools like Chicago,Harvard and MIT but I wanted to find out if there are other emerging schools.
Where have people gone so far and what is their field of specialization? I am thinking about Development Economics combined with Econometrics as the area of specialization.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated....

Why don't people just google school rankings and/or US News & World Report ko findings? One has to be economical with one's time, wouldn't an economist agree?

Depends on what you want to do with your degree, Do you want to teach, work for a bank as an economist or be a consultant. If you want to be a consultant, Harvard Business School is the best, all you'll do is case studies. Econometrics or anything technical, I would recommend Sloan School of MIT, UC Berkeley, Stern School at NYU, UCLA, University Of Michingan at Ann Arbor. Although it is advisable to do reasearch on up and coming schools, I think that to get the best value out of your education you should try to target a top 20 school.

I don't know why some of you have to drag the essence of the topic to the ground. I know I can google it but the essential information that is required is not found there. I wanted to find out if some people have in fact gone to some of those schools so that they can share their experiences.
Even the ranking, I can find it. But what goes on inside the school is largely hidden from the public. As I said, I wanted to focus on Development Economics and Econometrics.
Though, I don't have a good GPA, I do have a double major in Maths and Economics and a couple of econometric research papers to my credit. Hence, I am contemplating on which schools to apply to as it also costs money.

NYU Stern is a great school. It is very diverse, and very interactive. A suitable location in the heart of New York City, access to all the great companies in Business, great Alumni Networking and because NYU is a top 3 school in Finance, majoring in Econometrics or Mathematical Finance is a great asset, because there is growing demand for econometricians and quantitative background people in Financial product development side, namely Financial Engineering, usage of derivatives, swaps, options etc.. If you want to use your economics degree and apply it in Banks, consulting firms, hedge firms etc, Being around NEw York would be great exposure for you. Investment Banks are growing their businesses in Emerging Markets, and someone with Developmental Economics knowledge plus an analytical skill set can be very attractive...

I agree with M5 that NY provides an excellent location but my interest is not in the stock markets or finance. After graduation, I hope to work for some INGO or other organizations as a researcher and at the same time I want to play a significant role in the planning of Nepalese economy through proper quantitative analysis.
I specifically wanted to find out schools with strong programs on Development Economics and Econometrics rather than finance.

Just curious why don't you want to do Math PhD and choose rather Econ PhD since you had undergrad in math too?

What's in Name? It does not matter where you go for your Ph.D. The real success is whether you will sustain throughout the program. I heard that there are more than 50 drop out rate in those ranking university, and if you cannot make it through all your time and investment gone. Nonetheless, I am not discouraging you. My suggestion is go where you think you can make it happen. After all, after your Ph.D. you sell your experties not the school's name.

I do not wish to disclose my school ( not that bad of a school)but I did double major to facilitate my study of Economics rather than an inherent interest in Maths.

There is nothing in name but everything starts with it. The facilities..the professors and their publications...subsequent involvement in research...everything counts for graduate study...

Having been through this rigamarole, I can understand what you are going through. I believe the US News could be the right sarting point. Once you start doing searches online/offline and talking with people in the field, you will definitely get firmer idea which program you want to join.

Yes, I agree, the school ranking does matter. By school ranking, I mean departmental ranking. In grad school scenario, you could have an excellent name brand university but with a lousy department that everybody avoids, and vice versa. So looking up who the professors are is absolutely essential, as one of them could potentially be your advisor who plays a pivotal role in your career, both during and after grad school.

If you are looking into Econometrics, I know PennState had a very solid and well known group of professors in that field. But that was almost a decade ago. I have also heard that Simon Frasier University in Canada is outstanding in Econometrics. University of Chicago is definitely the premiere institution to look at, especially if you are considering a career in International Development. Quite a few of my friends in World Bank were former residents of Hyde Park (UofC's location).

Anyway, it is an exciting phase you are in. Enjoy the process while you can, once you are in, you will have hardly any time to smell the roses for next five years.
