Pioneer means "break new ground". I remember when I was about 10-12, there were SEVERAL times he was in the news because he had performed some brain surgery for the first time in Nepal. Does this qualify as breaking new ground or not?

I do not know about his publications and that is not indicative of his ability to perform.

...there are many more surgeries to be done for the first time in Nepal, which are carried out routinely in many parts of the world. the term 'pioneer' in neurosurgery in general probably requires a bit more than just performing for the first time in a particular part of the world.

I agree 100% with chakku. Upendra Devkota was a hype in the early days,there is nothing so "Exceptional", "Pioneering" in his expertise,he just follows what other surgeons have been following in west Bengal and Assam of India.

Follow his so called pioneering works with Dr. chang of Siliguri,you will get a glimpse of what this guy is up to.

Eminitrader, pls go to Birhospital and check out. I am not talking about any other category or person (peon). What i think is if someone respects you and greet you then you don't loose anything by greeting them back!!!!!

In emergency cases you don't shop around.
He charges very big amount . We all know its very hard to pay big amount by most of the patient. Do you think patients ask his service for free for neurosurgery?

And i am agree that we shouldnot go with his personal life.
But if he improves his patient doctor relationship then would be far better for him and patients. (Just my opinion).

Do you consider Madan Krishna/Hari Bansha to be pioneers or not? I think they are. With your defination, since comedy has been done for centuries, they should not be considered pioneers.

Yes, in that case I would probably go see some other doctor that will show some respect. How do you define respect? If someone says hello to me and I do not have time to talk, am I being disrespectful? Everybody wants some of his time and if they don't get it, is that considered being disrespectful. I don't think he is telling his patients to go to hell. Maybe the patient's family because sometimes they deserve it. It has happened with many doctors that the patient's family tells the doctors how to do their job. You don't get respect, you have to gain it.

look emitrader, you're free to believe what you want to believe. all i's trying to do was to encourage people to look at the facts rather than follow some nepali medias' miguided claims.

So in your mind who are the pioneers in engineering, medicine, litreture? I'm not sure if there is anything that has been done in Nepal that is already not done in some other country.

i take my words back about dr. devkota, if you feel it's undeserving. he does not deserve to be a role-model to you and to others, agreed. there are far better neurosurgeons in nepal, asia and in the world who deserve the place of top influencing personalities of nepal.

no one is perfect and no one is super human in this non-utopian society where we're living. when i say role-model, i mean it for certain qualities that people have. dr. devkota, in my view, certainly has some and that earns him a position in the list of top people of nepal-- where in exactly and after how many people -- i don't know!

number of publications, how he treats patients, his attitudes all do count to certain extent, but it cannot take, what he has achieved, away from him.

To crack open the fourth ventrical of your brain was done back in 1979 in europe, for dr chang in west bengal it was a routine practice since late 80' and throughout 90 and I am sure he still performs such procedures. BS 2054 in daily kantipur new year special issue upendra claimed he was the first person to risk with that kind of surgery. He added that after spending hundreds of hours with american surgeons he claimed" this is first time even in the field of neuro-surgery!!!!".

And to your question what I do for living? that not something you want to know I assume,but since you asked here it is: I work for a medical research institute, and yes I do know the difference between an expert and pioneer.

Does Upedra Devkota deserve to be one of the top 49 men in Nepal? I don't know. I personally have found him very rude and disrespectful.

Okay, here's my personal experience. After waiting for many days, and with, what we call in Nepal-source-force, just to have him see my unconscious father's CT-Scan report, he was being treated more than the best Neuro-Suregeon of the world. In the return he proved to be very rude and disrespectful. While I was there, his fellow doctors said that he is capricious.

for those of you criticising Dr Devkota, how many of you would have DARED to say NO to king G during his ultra powerful reign?

Oh, and for those of you complaining about him being rude and not respecting you, well, it depends on personality. Devkota has ALWAYS been like that. You can't have world class brain or neurosurgery and good respect at the same time necessarily.

And I do agree he is a pioneer. He saved my mum's life. Ok, maybe I am biased here. But pioneering means doing something for the first time. He may not have pioneered brain surgery, but he certainly pioneered it in Nepal.

As far as his high fees are concerned, there are MANY neurosurgeons as good as Dr Devkota now. People should goto them. Ad yeah, he is loaded, he is already building a new hospital and research centre where MANY other neurosurgeons will be working. Guess he deserves some cash for all that hard work.

Oh, and King G's present- that black BMW, mercedes whatver..hehe, Devkots can afford literally doezens of those with ease.

Avg price of surgey- Rs. 50,000. Does about 5 or 6 a day.
