Congratulations to all Nepali Madhesis for victory in the struggle against opressive regime(s). After 200+ years, we have equality.

To all those who are afraid (and consequently angry) of change. Dont worry, this is not one opressive regime replacing another. This is equality. We will treat those with respect who have opressed us for centuries.

To all those who wanted to play "ragat ko holi" and all those who were angry that chana chatpat and khali sisi people were demanding rights, you can calm down now, we got what we wanted.

Enjoy

This is a victory for all Nepalese not just Madesis. Yet another piece of evidence that we as a country are strong enough to survive stuff like this and the forward is one of inclusion and tolerance.

Jai Madesh, Jai Pahad, Jai Himal, Jai Nepal!

Its good news that MPRF has decided to postpone its strikes and protests for 10 days and hope that a solution is found within these 10 days.

Its a victory for all Nepalese, not just Chana chatpat walas, as they can finally breathe the peaceful air.

My only fear is the next move by the so called "Royal Chamchas". they infiltrated and sparked the terai violance, what next??

All we want is Peace in Nepal.

Jai Nepal

I wish it was a victory for "ChanaChatpat" and "Khali-SiSi" people. It is not their victory. It is a victory for Goit and company. It is a victory for those people who think that Violence can bring change in Nepal. I don't have nothing against Madesh or Madeshi Janta, I will always hoot for their equal right. I do acknowledge the fact that they have been discriminted in Kathmandu and some areas; however, in "Madesh-Movement" we over-looked "Badham" people (Pahadiya). They are also as discriminated as "ChanaChatpat" people. It is not a race(Madesh/Pahad) issue; it is a class issue. It is a universal truth that upper class always dominated the lower class. It is not just in Nepal but everywhere. The discrimination issue should be solved/addressed with "equal opportunity" and "equal rights."
Yes, having their equal representative in parliament or legilature body is a step towards having equal right and opportunities. Nepal Government has decided to take population as factor and give terai the representation of 49%. Great achievement for terai people, eh? But the question remains, at what cost? Himalya region of Nepal, for instance, Karnali zone has a very few population but large area. There share in parliament will be decreased. I am sure that no one will disagree on the fact that Himalaya and most of the Pahadi areas are more under-developed than most of the Terai region. It is sad seeing that there representation being reduced. if increase in representation in parliament insures equal right and opportunity, what about the right of these unheard people, who can't even make it to places like Kathmandu to sell "ChanaChatpat, Khalisisi or Badham?" I can't believe that geographical criteria is completely being ignored and only the population factor is being accounted. I hope whaterver is happening, is happening for good.

Rahulvai - My comment was in the spirit of inclusiveness but I am willing to go with you and say "Jai Jai Jai Nepal Sundar, Shanta, Bishal (in heart and spirit I assume? :P) We all love our country in our own ways and I am willing to go with any expression of love that does not seek to exclude anyone.

Yes, I understand your feelings but it was just my speculation that some antisocial and antinational forces may take advantage over this.

I think it is a victory for 'Madhesis'( only for the leaders and not for poor Madhesis) in expense of Pahadis and Himalis. I thought the govt would take geography into account but that was a wishful thinking. So, if they are happy to get those extra seats, let them be. As everyone else, I am just glad that the violence is over.

Hey Bijon4u -

It is a shame that people said such things. If it is any consolation most kids growing up in Nepal find themselves having to take racist crap from others no matter who they are. There are plenty of Chetri and Bahun kids who get picked on in school by others because of their physical features (e.g "I thought you were an Indian till you spoke Nepali"), or Newar kids who are made fun of because their accents , or SETAMAGURALI kids who get labelled, often dismissively, as Tibetans. I guess children can be mean creatures sometimes and the lesson we need to teach our kids is don't take such s.h.i.t from anyone - give it right back. A bloodied nose can sometimes be less harmful than a wounded mind.

That said, it is moments like what we just experienced that make me feel proud to be a Nepali. Every time we are on the brink, we seem to have this incredible resilience within us to spring back. And if you go back and look at history it is really when we appeal to our better natures and bring out a spirit of tolerance, respect and inclusion that we seem to be at our best as a country.

I believe in equal rights for everyone. Having said that I met one madeshi family from
Jefferson MO. I first thought they were Indians because they don't speak Nepali at all. His all family speak hindi, I mean even 3 year old son. All the time when I was there their family was talking in Hindi. Only the adult man is talking with me as well as other people in the gettogether in English. I don't understand why he is so after Indian? If they were talking in Bojpuri or some of their own ethnic language, it would be fine. I was so sad by the fact that they claim nepali but speak hindi themselves as well as teaching hindi to the future generations. Again, I said I would be proud if his family speak their own bojpuri language rather than hindi.

I dont want to get into a discussion about Hindi versus Nepali - there have been other threads and times where we have done that - but who are we to tell others what language to speak in? If you someone speaks to you in Hindi and you don't want to or cannot reply back in Hindi, then tell them just that and get done with it. It is their loss that they can't speak the most predominant language in their country.

My congratulations to all Nepalis and paticularly Madhesis. Hope, if things go as planned and Terai is declared a state with its own governing power, its leader and policy will not promote Bihari mentality and make Terai an operating ground for Indian underworld thugs.

Nepal has already embarked on a decisive journey of democracy and justice for all however initial confusion and hesitancy it might encounter.

So the people who did not get victory or lost today are those who were, for whatever reasons, mistrusting new Nepal's ability to deliver justice and were promoting breaking up of the country. They lost it today and I have no doubt they will lose more and decisively in upcoming and successive elections.
