I just "talked" to a fellow named Nelson Mandela. What if he had put his glass down? What if Gandhi had tossed aside his glass? May be the moral of the story is morals about life dont come in one size fit all. Lessons are good to learn in life, but even better is when they are incorporated with a grain or two of salts.

Vincent Bodega - Well said. I completely agree that we cannot look at every situation with the same lens. One mans ceiling is another man's floor and the same situation in life can teach two different people two very different things. In that spirit, I could not resist offering this thought : the moral that I take away from the story is not to abandon your principles but rather to take the time to pause, reflect and think over them whenever you can. After all, it was the Mandela who came out of jail, and not just the one who went into jail, who was able to have such a profound impact on others. Had he not paused to forgive those who committed injustices against him during all those years , would he still have been what he was? Dont mean to be argumentative, offense or pedantic but your thoughtful response to Loote brought on a bit of a pensive mood , hence the response :)

whats wrong in dwelling in a tad bit of a pensive mood? Let me use your analogy of "one man's ceiling is another man's floor," if I may. If one doesnt have a reference to a floor, how can a ceiling exist. If one cant adopt sadness, how can one even acknowledge happiness. Mandela did what he had to do; forgive, forget or even forgo his youthful dreams. Regardless, I dont think he put his glass down. Irrespective of how awful it tasted he drank every bit of that drink. Thats my perception, but again...

He he .. agreed - so I guess it depends on what we make out of "putting your glass down", no? Later. :)

The moral is not to leave the glass down on the table but to take a break (while you're at it, eat a kit-kat bar). have fun!!!

yes i agree! it reminds me of one of my organic chemistry professor during my college days. he'd say - "organic chemistry aint that complicated, you guys make it complicated. Let the simple things be simple, don't make them complicated." I am not using my degree after graduating but i still recall his words and replace "organic chemistry" with life and it does make a lot difference.
