No countries really matter to Americans .... they are the Parchanda of the world!! But really ... most Americans are dumb ... I'd say 60 to 70 pratisat of people does not know that Canada is not part of the US.

Yeah, they are so dumb, that's why they drive the world economy, lead in innovation and technology, and as shocking as this might sound , are the preeminent power in the world today. How they could get this far without brains beats me. God prolly got fed up with Pat Roberston and Jerry Falwell invoking his name and answered their prayers - yes, that's got to be it!

1% of americans are the power behind the world's leading economy. They exploit "smart" labor from India, China, and other smart countries... but I never said Americans were not smart ... i said 60 to 70 % of them are!!!

Lalpari - And your source for that statistic is? I might be a bit more inclined to believe it if I knew where it was coming from. Americans have fared somewhere in the middle when compared to other countries in most surveys. If we are to get serious here, and I still think this topic should be taken lightly, general knowledge is but only one measure of smartness. What people do with their knowledge - how they act based on what they know - is, in my opinion, the real measure of smartness. And on that account, you just need to look around - I think Americans are as smart - no more, no less - as any other people in the world when you look at nations collectively and use more than general knowledge to measure smartness My 2 cents.

Bathroom Coffee - Agreed. I mean I can accept that ignorance is a problem in the US but come to think of it, about as much as it might be anywhere in the world. We cannot compare the most well read people in Nepal and Europe to the least in the US. That's be apples and oranges. A more suitable comparison would be to compare people who hold similar positions in their societies. Compare the less well informed people in the US to similarly informed people in Europe or Asia. And likewise, compare those in business, industry, the sciences, government etc - doing well, college degree, stable income, read newspapers etc - in the US to those in other countries. As for proportions of such people in different societies, unless I see some hard numbers, I think we should not make too many assumptions. Pokhara 22 - I don't want to get into a discussion about the merits of the Iraq war, but you cannot use that as a stick to beat the collective intelligence of Americans. While the immediate fallout of the Iraq war has been dismal to put it mildly, it is still too early to judge the long-term effects. Even so, trying to link a specific government policy to the collective intelligence of people is a bit out of whack in my opinion. My objective is not to defend the US here - it is to point out that we should not loose track of rational thought based on a joke.

I agree with lalpari that few americans are really smart or are smart at exploiting others and other countries, but a lot of them are just plain stupid and ignorant. Come on, you cannot compare a nepali villager who has never had any exposure, does not know what media is, has never studied to these Americans, who have very good education, have tons of TV channels, have internet, have read books and newspaper. From my experience of living in far east Asia, Europe and now in America, I can tell that Americans really come across as the least intellegent ones, at least when it comes to common sense. Or else when Church is dying everywhere else, evangelics are increasing in Amrica. Oh boy, they surely take that book seriously. BTW, to those who might have been living in East coasts, I would suggest you to live and meet people from real America, yes the RED american, the the Mid and South states to see what I am talking about.

The truth lies on the fact not the fact lies in the truth. Its our insight to our own judgment how do we evaluate ourselves? Tell me guys how many people in nepal have access to electricity? Americans are introvert. They think from their perspective since they were never brought up in the scarcity and starvation. When u have problem living the mediocre economic life, you tend to be rebellious and try to get to know the things better even if you don't go to primary school. INformation is all about the necessit y not the compulsion. We are necessitated for the information since we wanna know whether people in the other world are striving like us I am still not american yet.ehe

Since when did information become a measure of intelligence? May be an appropriate conjecture would be to call Americans uninformed, definitely NOT stupid. Theres a difference, you know?

hahaha makes me laugh by reading those conslusions made from that video.. If they were that stupid like some of my friends are trying to prove from that video, - the litaracy rate would not be 99% comparing to Nepal's 48% -they wont be super power.... - they would not have NASA and PENTAGON here in USA.... - they would not have worlds top scientist and labrotaries in USA - And we would not have been come to USA to read in the uni were STUPID people go to school and there are STUPID teacher teaching us. -They would have economy like Nepal. -AND THE MAIN THING IS ..IF MOST OF THE PEOPLE WERE STUPUID, THEY WOULD HAVE DONT AMERICA BANDH EVERY OTHER DAYS TO SHOR THEIR DISSATIFACTION.. -AND MANY OTHER..... Every country has stupid people living in that nation..I think if we really wanna compare the stupidity of public to the ration of the population, I think Nepal, India and other developing countries had 100 times more stupid people living than in USA. Lets not make fun of others.....Aru ko Dhaad ma Jumra dekhda...afno dhaad ma hatti pani dekhnu parchha.

Maha-Shakti - Dont' mean to pick on you but there are a couple of points which I'd like to address, if I may. You seem to distinguish between rural and urban folk - privileged and not-so-privileged folks in Nepal. I wish you could do the same in the US. I have been to and lived in areas besides the two coasts - the South included - and I know what you are talking about. It is because of that very experience that I feel Americans cannot - and for that matter no people in the world can - be collectively termed stupid. Your example reminds me of an American tourist who went trekking in Jomsom and came back and reported to his friends that people in Nepal have never heard about computers just because the people he met on his trek had not heard about them. Both are cases of over generalization, and sorry to say this, smack of intellectual laziness that so often gives rise to convenient generalizations like these. So just because some parts of America, have higher rates of poverty and lower rates of "world-awareness" (for lack of a better phrase), how does that make Americans collectively stupid? Isn't that like saying we Nepalese don't know what computers are? As for the Church - it's revival is most intense in the Bible belt and the deep South - the same parts of America that suffer most from poverty. Religious institutions have been growing everywhere in the world where there is poverty and problems. Take Nepal for example , Christian missionaries have been most affective in areas that have been the most underdeveloped and hardest hit by poverty. I am not linking poverty with religion but when there is poverty, like in vast swatch of the Bible belt, and some parts of the rural South, it can only be expected that religion fills the vacuum left by the failure of the secular state and businesses to improve people's lives. Therefore, we need to look at the big picture that encompasses all areas and aspects of America - or Nepal or any other country - before coming to conclusion about the people in that country. My 2 (additional) cents.

US PRESIDENT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE HE HOLDS THE LIFE AND DEATH AND POVERTY AND PROSPERITY AND RESEARCHES AND DEVELOPMENT OF NOT ONLY AMERICAN BUT THE ENTIRE WORLD. I wouldn't care so much about Amrican ignorance had it not been THE military superpower in the world with zillions of weapons to destroy the human race...but that is the case right now. My concern is that its these same Americans who have to power of vote to elect a man or woman who has or will have access to all these weapons. History has shown again and again that they are not afraid to use it whether rightly or wrongly is a matter of debate. The frightening thing is wars have been waged with the "support" of millions of NOT stupid but ignorant people who have difficulty naming their 2 neighbouring countries or their president. I think it is dangerous when Americans clueless. The impact of villager in Nepal not knowing the capital of Sweden and an American not knowing the his/her president vice president who has waged 2 wars has vastly different implications in the real world. To draw a crude analogy, I don't mind living with a monkey and have nothing against the monkey cuz monkey cannot be anything but monkey but I do worry if the monkey happened to be weilding a sharp sword. Will the monkey know how to use the sword wisely? JB

Dyam - I use Nepal as an example only to drive home one point: you have to be generalized at in order to realize how wrong and inaccurate generalizations of others can be. That's all. I mean no disrespect to anyone.
