try to use your credit card half the amount of what you have got. for eg if your total credit amt is 2000 then try to use 1000 or less and then pay min balance alwez on time. thats all i know.

you said you've been here only for 18 months, so it takes a while. And don't listen to guffs like you have to use credit cards.... Common sense, if you have enough money you dont use credit cards. Speaking about credit cards, say you have 3 credit cards, try and make your balance 0 all the time, Use it and pay the balance at once.
The less you owe to others the better credit you have.

My advice is that go to the bank where you have checking account and ask them to make a secure credit card for you. Secure credit card is actually a card where you make your deposit and then use only that amount. for eg. if you make 500 dollars deposit secure credit card you are eligible to use only upto 500 dollars. Then you can use that card for making any purchase then pay your amount in full each month. the secured card will be held for a year and you cannot withdraw your 500 dollars, then after that the bank will issue or you can get credit card from any other companies. after that you might be eligible to get blue for students from american express.after one year you can get back your deposit with interest. always remember its not good to have too many credit cards, limit to one or two and earn points or gain some rewards. I hope this helps.

How long you have credit history itself is important for good credit history. Whatever methods you follow to keep your credit record good, if your credit history is not old enough, then lenders consider your credit history as not good enough.

I thought US government stopped issuing Social Security Numbers to foreign students. You can build credit history only if you have SSN.

There is no SSN without job and no credit cards without SSN. I think. Previously international office used to write a letter to SSN office but now SSN after on-campus job only.
Is there any possibility for credit cards fro int students without SSN? any idea?

Parbarya ,
It is impossible.
All you can get is secured credit card which is already described by somebody.
I have heard that some bank give credit card to illegal peoples as Mexicans who dont have SS.
I only heard this. I am not sure though.
TRy to do some research.

First of all, let's not get puzzled with puzzeled in life: once you will figure it out first, then the rest of building history, mystery, Ishtiry and etc are easy to demystify.

Bank of America, I heard issues Credit Cards without SSN. I heard this on the news some time ago. Anyways, here is how you build your credit.
1. Get a secure loan. This is the best way to build credit. This could be secure Credit Card (like mentioned above in some posts), Car Loan, etc. DO NOT MISS ANY PAYMENTS or even be one day late on any secure loans as they are reported to the credit reporting agencies right away.
2. Keep your credit cards under 5 and make sure the balances are below 50% on all of them. Make a little bit more than the minimum payment each month, on time and again do not miss any payments although only payments late than 30 days are reported to credit agencies as normal credit cards are consider unsecured loans.
3. Keep you cards open as long as possible. Do not open and close accounts regularly. Closing accounts/ not keeping them open for a longer period of time hurts your credit.
If you need you can get a lot more information at www.bankrate.com

Well if you are not interested in something, you really are not required/supposed to keep up with it... and that cannot be called old fashioned... so lurey i believe you do not fall under that category... :)
