This may not be the right forum to discuss this issue but I'd like to know how a sane nepali would/should respond in this situation.

This happened to my friends - a couple. They moved in with a nepali in a 2 bed 2 bath sharing all the costs (fifty-fifty). He stays in 1 of the bedroom with attached bath and cooks and utilize every commodity in the kitchen and living room. The couple stays in the other bedroom and uses the restroom in the living room. Everything was fine till the end of 2nd month. On the 3rd month, this person says he will only pay 33% of rent and utilites. His reason - We are 3 people so we should equally share the cost.

How logical is his reason? How will you respond if you were the couple in the situation? Since defaming a nepali by another nepali is not a logical option for the couple, they want to settle the issue amicably by dialogue but do not know how the thing work here in US.

the best idea is to stay separately . if you have such a problem then there is no meaning to share apartment, do not try to find any logic.

50-50 for the rent as he is taking 1bed and 1 bath but utilities should be 1/3 each.

Do them a favor by paying
(33.33+.01) % of the bill. The couple pays the rest.
Give the couple the larger room.

There should be cooking, trash-hauling, grocery shopping, cleaning schedule that everyone has to follow.

It's okay to do favor as long as it's not 15 miles-plus ride to work back and forth 21 days every month. Help in stuff which does not occur on a regular basis is fine to promote harmony and goodwill.

If it becomes unmanageable, find a newly minted roomie who has a love life similar to yours. After all, it is quite hard to live with a couple if they are not one of your amiable relatives. Also, married people and single people have different Lifestyle which by the way is a very famous brand.

If nothing works out and you can't think of any other option other living with the magnetic couple, here is what you can do. Since you can't goto Gorkha looking for Ram Shah for justice, Judge Judy might be your last resort.

Supplemental opinion here:

If the couple does not want to budge-up at all from their very original 50.00% proposal then you guys might wanna move into a three bedroom apartment, you secure the medium size room and pay 33.34% of the household tab and don't give a damn about what the couple does with the other two rooms.

I completely understand some people can never survive without living with room-mates and therefore are my suggestions as set forth above.

Respect the initial contract . 33% each or 50% is not the question.

If the initial agreement was 50-50 then that guy needs to respect that.He cannot say after 2 months he is not going to pay. That is wrong!
he shouldn't have moved in the first place with the couple !!

But except the rent- everything should be 33.33% cause of individual consumption.

This is Fair!

I don't think your friend knows even the simplest mathematics. If he can not understand this, he would not understand the basic of friendship too. Get rid off him.

50/50
1. that guy is already ready for 50/50 deal and should not change later. he can create problem and can change roomate everyday (as he might have 2 suitcase). family people can't do this.
2. i had the same situation when i was student. he was ready to pay 50/50.
i. my wife help to cook and clean house and cooking pot.
ii. we did shopping (he never did)
iii. he was more like paying guest.
iv. he never paid rent on time.
v. one day it went 3 months rent due.
vi. i asked for rent and he says he is ready for only 1/3.
vii. to settle down problem, i called university police and that single guy was made to pay all rent and was warned of not to do same again.
viii. we seperate following month.

I would agree with the people above who have said that rent should be 50% each for the two people and all other utilities should be 33.33% each for the three people.
The issue is not about whether someone is financially constrained or not. Also, logically I see no reason why that guy should pay 50% of everything. I understand he got into the contract but you have to be logical as well. Why should he pay for the utilities and other stuff for your friend/wife?

On the other hand,
If it is you and your wife (I am assuming it out here) doing most of the household chores and that guy only coming by to eat with you guys, that guy should seriously divide up the cost 50% each. Man, I would pay $500 more than do the cooking and cleaning all the time. This is about understanding though...

I have seen people stay that way. This is how they did it. Of the total expenses of lets say 10000, the two guys paid 4k each and the girl paid 2k. Does that make sense?
So, its more like 60-40.

However, if you guys are having such issues unsolved, I do not think it is worth staying together anyway. Bickering about who is supposed to pay the bills will seriously hurt yourself. So, be open and discuss the issue and if you can't resolve it, find another apartment.

I remember a similar situation which happened to me and another friend. We were living with a couple in a three bed room and we were sharing everything four ways (even grocery in the beginning which we discontinued after a month or two). However, after living together for 1 and half years, the couple decided that we should only redo the lease if we split the costs 3 ways (for rent).

Like the points mentioned above, they forgot about some things (the effect of which was rather cruel):

1) All of us had a similar income level. This way, we'd have a hard time making ends meet.
2) The different usages of electricity etc.
3) Common sense.

The big difference between our cases though is that we talked about what we wanted to do in the future rather than trying to change the arrangement in the middle.
However, I do feel that in choosing between 50:50 and 1/3rd deal, the 1/3rd deal is definitely more fair.

well it was already agreed that he would pay half the rent when he moved in so its not right for him after living there for 3 months to say he will only pay 33% the should have been settled this b4 he moved in
take him to court i suggest

1/3, NO MORE NO LESS FOR EACH

logically speaking... if there are three persons who are living in an apartment with two bedrooms ..obviously two are gonna occupy one room and the other room being occupied by the third..now does that mean that the former two is gonna pay just 50% of rent in total and then the latter fellow the remaining 50%..no way ..if it were to be work that way ..than all of them would want to sleep in that room that will accomodate two people inorder to pay HALF the rent as compared to the third..

now in this case, the only difference is that the couple would obviously share the room leaving absolutely no option for the poor fellow. he does not have that choice to occupy the room he wants, so why should he pay 1/2 instead of a 1/3. he would gladly share the room with either of the two( which is not possible in this case) if given that option.

many are raising the point that if he agreed to pay 50% in the begginning he should stick to that..but again ethically speaking, at first, he might in an error of judgement or by mere foolishness agreed to pay 50% but might have realised later(that it was'nt fair enuff) by rethought or someone telling him.

and is the third fella the regular cook aswell, if so than he should charge the couple extra, unless ofcourse the couple is regular dishwashers ..lol

Hmm... Its kinda a wierd topic to discuss here... Oh well .... Since its here.... Lets see .. IF u wanna be ethical u got to follow what u said before but If i had to decide I would go with 50-50 for rent cause both use 1 room each and may be couple should get the bath attached room cause they are gonna pay more for the utilities.... Yeah... They should pay 1/3 utilities ...cause every1 use utilities..... SO yeah 50-50 for rent with couple in attached bath and 1/3 for utilities...
