BY RABINDRA UPRETI/MAHOTTARI & SHYAM SUNDAR SHASHI
JANAKPUR, Aug 17 - District Administration Office in Mahottari clamped a curfew in Bardibas area after a protest rally taken out by local people against the murder of a vegetable vendor in adjacent Dhanusha district turned violent.
Police fired 37 rounds in the air and used five teargas shells to disperse the crowd after it attacked the area police post and blocked the east-west highway.
According to Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma, a night curfew has been imposed to stop further violence and restore law and order.
Superintendent of Police Keshav Adhikari said some police personnel were injured and the police post partially damaged during attacks by the irate crowd.
Protests flared in Bardibas as soon as information reached there about villagers in Pushpalpur of Dhanusha district lynching Prem Bahadur Thapa, a youth from Mahottari Maisthan.
The villagers had stopped a tractor in which he was taking pointed gourd from Bardibas to local Sakhuwa Mahendranagar market and beat him up with spades, wooden sticks and other agricultural equipment. About 12 people were in the tractor along with Thapa.
Thirty-four-year-old Thapa died of his injuries.
Thapa was passing through the village, which is on an alternate route to Mahendranagar market during flooding in the Ouraha river.
Police have arrested nine people on the charge of involvement in the murder and investigations are going on, according to Purna Chandra Joshi, Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The reason for the "brutal" killing of an ordinary man who was making a living selling vegetables in local weekly markets is yet to become clear, according to police. "Some people trying to disrupt social harmony may have a hand in the incident," a police officer said.
