Why are we ( all Nepalese, myself included ) so hypocritical when "English" or anything to related to it is concerned? I mean, there are tons of us in here who were lucky enough to have a schooling background that was based on English language but there are more people who were unfortunate not to attend an English-medium school. As such, why do some people get the urge to express their opinions in English even when they clearly know that their command over the English language isn't so good?

Take phalano.com. Rajesh KC does a brilliant job of bringing these picturesque natural wonders across Nepal and understandably, everyone appreciates his work. However, I've noticed that when people try to acknowledge his efforts, they seem to find some massive "urge" to use English instead of using plain ol' simple Nepali and in doing so, they end up making some embarrassing comments. It truly does embarrass me a great deal when I see someone tries to put an effort onto something which he's better off not putting any effort whatsoever. Please note, I'm not trying to imply that I've perfected "English" myself, still, wouldn't we be better off opting to use the language that we're fluent in rather than the language that we're less fluent in, depending upon the situation? मैले भन्न खोजेको, अङ्रेजी म भन्दा नेपाली राम्रो सँग लेख्न औन्छ भन्ने जाँदा जादैइ, अङ्रेजी नै प्रयोग गर्नु पर्ने कीन?

Your thoughts?!

P.S. Just go through the comments and you be the judge.

Hmm .. I agree to you partially.

I get annoyed when i see hoardings / even commercials , making SPLELING errors. I thought and still do think exactly the way you're doing now.

On blogs, i take it a little different though.
Its the more you write, the more you attain clarity in grammar / expression. And of course , writing a comment on  a blog or a forum is a good way to express yourself, though most of the times, you cannot. And anyway, most of us tend to skip over write-ups/comments that are not clear on expressions than misunderstand the writers' brevity.

Was in a pondering mood, so opened this up! So, pnder I should, I guess!

I think they want to practice! If they are not writing research papers, articles for newspapers, etc (and may be matrimonial ad for themselves... :)) I guess it shouldn't be a concern of anyone at all.

Also those who want to criticize others should also be a little careful. For instance, here,

http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/openThread.cfm?forum=2&threadid=53799

a fellow forumite says that the DV holder's "English was... shit" but his own seems not too far away from it. And mine is thereabouts as well!

Mero dui kanchi hai! Please don't take it personal.

Bal ji

Have you seen a Nepali keyboard ever? Not me.Not having a physical keyboard and even if I did, the learning curve, Ooooffff, it's enough to put off people. I understand your concern and if you think it's that of a big deal, you should invent a Nepali keyboard and push it in our educational system in Nepal early on so the kids get used to it. Here...that's my 2 cent advice for free.

Your're talking about a language which stopped making words a long time ago, hence its backwardness. What exactly is the Nepali word for "keyboard", "computer", "www.sajha.com---can you say that in Nepali ? without using English words" and so and so ....do we really need to spell them all out?

क्त्रो धाक्,जुन गोरु को शिङ् चैन तेस्को नाम तीखे
That was hard to type the above sentence, Unicode converter is not the most effecient.

You should be annoyed of yourself for this then: "making SPLELING errors." You even went on to capitalize the letters, just to stress how important it is to you that people not make spelling errors. Haha

I TOTALLy disagree with the idea that we should only do what we are "good" at. Rather, we should learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat those mistakes again.

Since you started with "something to ponder upon".......well, let’s do it. It’s true that one's comment loses its aesthetic appeal and clarity if it is chocked with common grammatical mistakes no matter how legitimate and plausible his/her comment is. In some cases it may ends up disseminating off-the-wall messages that the author in no way intended to do. And, there IS NOT any rule of thumb indicating one should express oneself in language one has command over or IS there any? As someone mentioned earlier that its a blog/ forum that is by and large meant to swap ideas and express oneself. To add to that, I would like to ask "Can’t we be little lenient in blog/forum and condone petty mistakes related to grammar?" Lets try to capture the essence and crux the author attempts to propagate from his piece. Having said all these......I myself hate to see reckless writing (be it in English or Nepali) and don't mean to promote the use of run-of-the-mill writing skill. But I do definitely believe that we learn from our mistakes and there is nothing wrong with making mistakes but making it repeatedly is not acceptable.

Hey Balbhadra, what would be your take on this when I express myself as-

Mero Angreji ma lekhne seep patakai chaina, kehi sahayog garnu paryo sathi harule malai.

                                                                          OR

आई ह्याब पोर राइटिङ्ग स्किल इन ईङ्लिस, क्यान समबडि हेल्प मि प्लिज |

LOL just trying to pull your chain...no offence

It's quite normal for folks to comment in English. Many people get confused with the selection of language as it baffles them whether English is a norm or a language for expression. Yet another reason is difficulty in typing in Devnagari.

While the use of English language in a general term may signify the capability of the speaker when he/she is non native English speaker, a false understanding is on some disdainful chaps that the very use of English is substitute for the strength and the logic of the content. It's a hypocrisy . Don't blame me if I am justifying what I am writing. My oxymoronic displayal, like others, might be the vainful attempt to "glorify"(though that's quite a opposite) my existence in the United States of America (not Africa).

I get the feeling that I'm being misunderstood in here. I wasn't talking about the limited usages of "Devanagari" script as some of you have highlighted. Neither was I highlighting the grammatical correctness of the way that Nepalese write in. Rather, what I was stressing on was the feeling that grows inside me of embarrassment when I see a Nepali person "pushing" himself  hard to cough his expressions/views in "angreji".
Take a look at this comment : "rajesh jee,
many many thanks, afno desh nepal bata, dherai dherai tada rahana badhya hami jasta pardeshi haru lai yo picture le, yasto mahasush garayoki aaja pani ma mero pyaro nepal aamako nyano kakhma chhu,
feri feri pani yatinai dherai khusi dinu hunechha bhanne aasha ma chhu."

Now compare that with " thanks 4 picture i am very happy with u coz what a nice picture i can show this picture to another american guys.now i am feeling i am liveing in neapl so please catch another more picture and share with us. i am very happy because i alrady show this picture to my office staff so they wanna come to nepal and they wanna see mountains form live.
right now my tears falling down by my eyes coz i love nepal.
thanks and u have a great days"

And guest4, if you were to read my post, I wasn't highlighting some typical errors like using "then" instead of "than" like you did in your reply or using "except" for "accept". Those are the types of errors that can be corrected but surely, when you want to acknowledge someone, wouldn't you be better off trying to convey your message in a clear manner by using the correct channel of communication instead of making a complete fun of yourself by creating the confusion? Understand what I'm saying.
