Hey guys i am planning to buy the SLR camera, but its becomming hard for me to decide which one to pick. I came across two choices. One is Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera and other is Nikon - 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera.

Technically it seems Canon is better because it has 10.1 MP and it is also giving a deal on Telephoto Lense. But I have a feeling that photo quality is better with Nikon. I am completely illitrate about SLR camera, so I have no idea which one is better. I am not very much concerned about the MP but I just need to know which one works better for the amature like me as I dont have a very steady hand .

Basically I am interested in landscape and potrait photography. Please guys help me on this.

Hmmm....

1. you are illiterate about SLR (I would say DSLR to be precise, but who cares) camera

2. you are an amateur

3. you don't have steady hand

Brother, I think you are better off with point-and-shoot camera.  I am not being facitious.  Why spend lots of money on DSLR when your needs will probably be met by a regular compact camera?

Thanx Riten, you made a good point here. Actually I already have a normal Digital Camera. But Since I have a passon for photography, I think Digital SLR could provide me with a better result s rather than Normal Digital camera. So I just wanted to know which DSLR would be better to start off with.

Any way ,your link was pretty much helpful. Thanx again.

If you are into portraits and landscape Nikon all the way.
Well it is not the camera itself that is important it is the lenses. Both have a tremendous collection
of lenses but for portraits and landscape Nikon is better cut. Buy a cheap camera body but never buy bad lens. But again the camera that you want to buy will not play well with some of the lenses
regarding auto focus. Canon has no such problems. Anyway cameras like nikon D80 and D200 are really cheap these days if you buy a used one and they are very fine cameras. My advice is buy a decent second hand body and invest into great lens, you will be really happy with results. Besides if you dont get good results you cant blame the camera on that:) after all its the photographer who makes the pics not the camera.

Great nikon lens for landscapes:
Nikon 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 (Cheap but REALLY good)
rest are in the expensive side
Nikon 17-55 f2.8
Nikon 14-24 f2.8 (The ultimate landscape lens)

Portraits
Again 50mm f.14
85mm f1.8 f1.4
135mm f2.0

Well most of the lens are really expensive but you cant go wrong if you start with either of
50mm lens which you can get from $120-200.

but so far as I have found, Nikon bodies need Nikon lenses and are not compatible with other lenses.... is that true ? if so,in that case, which one do you suggest ?

by the way canon also has other features like auto cleaning mechanism....

@sangifroid all the makers have the specific lens mount that only accepts the lenses designed by the makers itself.
It is true with both nikon and canon. However nikon have a history of great backward compatibility and canon change their mount too often. With Nikon you can use the lenses produced even in 70s!!

I think the Nikon camera you are talking about is either a D40 or D60. D60 has its own sensor cleaning mechanism. I feel that sensor cleaning is not a big issue, it is more of a marketing ploy. The AF incompatibility issue I was refering was that Nikons have two kind of Autofocusing mechanism 1. A camera driven and 2. Lens driven. Canons dont support camera driven lenses anymore but nikons do. D40 or D60 dont have a motor in the camera that allows the lens withoug on-lens motor for auto focusing. All the other cameras like nikon D80,D200,D300 have on camera motor. Advantage of having on camera motor is that you can use some truely magnificient lenses for pretty cheap of course with auto focus.

Anyway it is your personal choice at the end, and obviously the financing as well. I personally would suggest you
Nikon system for portraits and landscapes but if you want to go to canon , it is not a bad choice by any stretch of imagination. Just do what suits you the best.

Why are you comparing Canon Rebel XTI with Nikon D40 (6.1MP)?  Instead there is newer Nikon D40X 10MP priced same as XTI.  I think Nikon is good buy if you plan to upgade your lense coz they are cheaper.

I really appriciate divdude for giving such a helpful comments regarding the lense. Actually I am concentrating more on Nikon D40 with 18-55mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens .

Is it a wise decession to pick Nikon D40 to start up with?? Do you think that i would be able to take great pictures through this camera as my hands are not that steady as a pros.??

rockey07 D40 is a good choice well if possible get 18-55 VR (Vibration Reduction ) version. Another thing
pros dont have biomechanic hands or anything, they just use Tripods!! Anyway there is a rule of thumb for image
sharpness, say if you are using focal length of 50mm make sure your shutter speed is atleast 1/50th of second. It applies for all focal length. I am sure you will sort out the technical stuff soon and concentrate more in taking pics.
Good luck.

hi all!!!

I just bought the Nikon D60  SLR with AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR lense. So far i'm loving this thing. I just want to know that , what are the things that I should know to  take good care of such SLR? I mean things like.....where should i store the camera when its not in use , is it necessary to do servising of the camera , and so on. I have invested quite a lot in this camera so I expect its good proforence for a long time.

guys help me on this please!!!

D40 is not the best DSLR you can find. and D60 is a version of D40 with 10MP
plus these new D40s, D60s and D80s mage those AF-S lens hence none of the older Nikon lenses are compatible hence you will be forking out tons of money for lenses.

D80's are lot better and if you have couple of grand go for 1 more level up @ D200.

btw, not to disappoint you. i think you need to spend another $700 for the VR lens 55-200 or 55/75-300
as far the lens are concerned even D200 or higher DSLR takes all of those AF-S lens

good luck with the new toy

Don't worry much about the mega pixel and brand- they are used to fool the layman. If you want to be on the safe side you can choose the white one or the black, white being the Canon and black Nikon.

nikon are the best cameras.

go first for the body > then the lens >

if you have not bought a polariser - then go for one.

after that > u need to work on photoshop.

actually i already bought D60 with VR lense. I just need to know that how can i handle it properly. I mean where to store when not in use or lets put in this way..............should i be worried about the dust and moisture and if yes how to take precaution.?

Its a quite an expensive camera so i just want to make sure that it will last long. and how about the servising, is it necessary for regular servising for such kind of camera or can i just be carefree like we do with point and shot cameras??
