I am in OPT n have been working for a company as a fulltime in california. But the problem is my company doesnot know about social security and medicare examptions and has been deducting this amount since my start time. Now, i want to return this amount. Does any body know or have experience of returning this amount in the past ?. I would really appreciate your kind help n cooperation.

yes, search something from google that says F1 do not need to pay for medicare and social security. I did once but i dont know the website, just googled it. then fax that paper to human resource and also write that you are F1 and do not need to pay those.

Yes I have similar experience, I talked with HR people and submitted them the letter i received from the international student advisor (mentioning f1 dont need to pay soc. and med). you can also try as what namaste999 said. In my case i was unable to collect the tax that was already withdrawn.

Prodboy,
If you will be able to convince them regarding F1 exempt then your office can return your tax before oct. This is the time that the new fiscal year starts. Otherwise you can get your tax returned when you file your tax in 2009, if you will file as a non-resident. If you have filed as resident previously then to convince your office before oct is the only way getting your money back.

Here is what I was told by the HR- If you are in the united states for more than 5 years then, you must file your tax as a US citizen regardless your immigration stattus. So I had to pay may social security and medicare taxes. BTW I was working on OPT
