this is not an indian movie. this is an english movie based in india. most of the winners are british people. however, its good to see people like A.R Rahman winning the oscar. he is full of talent. he had no competition for one of the award though. if the movie was made in indian language, it could only enter in foreign language category, right?

Oscar is one of the most liberal political organization which makes bold statement, social and political each year. This year theme was "brown" aka bollywood, gay marriage aka Proposition 11. They will try their best NOT to offend anybody, it is less about talent and more about political view these days. Of course not all of them, but the underlying message (the best actor, director, movie) is always political. It was the right time to say hello to India. They have done that to blacks and chinks before, now was the time for Indians. Sadly, it was not an movie made by an Indian which would have been the REAL achievement for Indian Cinema. Had they made a REAL movie even in English by a real Indian artist, things would have been different. If it was in Hindi, then straight in foreign movie section. Unlike Ang Lee who is is a real Chinese who got the award for Broke back Mountain. It was a genuine Chinese director who made a mvoies for Hollywood, not for Chinese. Oscar was happy and gave him the award. Honestly, Slumdog millionaire (KutheyGalli ki Karodpathi) did not get any ward to the Indian, except for the musician Rahman.I hope this will be a wake up call to the Indians that instead of being an arrogant ethnocentric bunch of people, if you do make movies that share a universal theme, the rest of the world will support you. Ethnocentric in the sense, their Bollywood do NOT sway from their usual masala cheesy movies. It is not that they are incapable, simple put, they do not want to, a reflection of how stubborn they are to the rest of the world. When the prop 11 is such a big issue in California, they had to make their statement...we support gays. Mickey Rourke should have been beaten Sean Penn, period. But then again, it is all about Staple Center in California and the gay issue is unavoidable. I've lost respect for Oscar when Jamie Fox beat Don Cheateu, Denzel beat Russell (all in the name of being fair over REAL talents), Leo who has not received anything even though all his movies end up nominated every year. It seems they are saying "We'll give Leo some other time since he is young and his time will come later". I think Leo should stop going to Oscar even if there is a nomination, they simply won't give it to him. He was nominated for best actor in 2 movies at the same time (Blood Diamond and The Departed), did not get any. There are better awards where real talent are recognized irrespective of their political and social views than the Oscar.

Rewire you are totally correct. Oscars have more to do with presenting a liberal politically correct viewpoint. It is never an appreciation of the best of art and most of the talented actors never get one. Does it really matter who wins what, all of these award ceremonys are just self serving and meaningless to most people? I have better things to worry about like the financial and job markets

Some of view points on the OSCAR. SLUMDOG MILLIONARE :- Kudos to you, most of critics disagree that you should win so many awards but you did so hats off to you. OSCARS PPL :- Come on you knew A.R. Rahman would win so how about getting his name right. A.R.Rahman - You deserved it, you are full of talent and you were awarded in the eyes of the oscar sooner or later your name was written on oscars. So Congrats Anil Kappor:- Dude so some class. You stood up and clapped like a monkey in BFA now in Oscars at the end you were carrying Colson's award and raised it up and down like you won the cricket world championship. It was good they went off the air after that. It was a humilating act on your part. You are there representing the actors of Bollywood so show some class look at A.R.Rahman how humble he was. Dude if the director had cast the monkey in your place the movie would still be recognized. your part was limited be thankful you were a part of the movie Dev Patel and Freida Pinto:- You were just a cast members of this movie. Please do not consider your self as celebrities like Brad and Angelina. Dev the best thing you will do in hollywood is be another Kal Penn. Starting in another Harold and Kumar and yes you will be Kumar. I heard Pinto divorced her fiancee after Slumdog millionare won the BFA are you serious ? The real ppl that made the movie interesting was those slum kids. Common the kid that dove into crap saying amitabh Bachan was the best part lol.. Directors and producers - Finally you did something right by bringing those kids to the oscars if not you would have heard a lot from critics after the news that those kids were underpaid. Thankx Comments Welcome

I don't see any problem with getting his name right. What about many Asian who speaks English with heavy and improper accent? I am just giving this example to those who think about improper naming.Frieda Pinto never married so she was never divorced. She was just engaged. She is pretty and has her life ahead. She has already landed in Woody Allen movie. Dev Patel i believe he performs in famous British series "Skins",i personally haven't seen it. I believe those kids has trust fund set up for them. That is the best thing to do for them .

Pronouncing Indian name without accent re? Have you listened to an Indian person speak lately, every words sound funny with their accent. If Indians were in their shoes, they will butcher each and every name during the ceremony. At least they did not named the wrong country. "The Departed" was a remake of a Hong Kong movie, and they announced it during the Oscar that it was a remix of a "Japanese" movie instead. That my firend, is offensive. Go and check it yourself. I was watching Golden Globe with Jake, a typical regular patriotic America. When Anil started clapping like a money and jumping up, Jake asked "Who is this guy?". I told him, just a big time Indian star. He said Anil was ugly and acted retarded, that was an honest answer. I laughed my ass off. When asked "What did he do in the movie?", I told him there might be a small role, he was like "Do all the actors in India act like that ?". And my answer was "Yep, most of them". Just sharing my experience.

Lol anil kapoor was beaming like anything while the other dude was giving his speech. But u know u can't blame him. It is the Oscars after all. If I won an Oscar, id prolly be jumpin up and down like a chimpanzee on super steroids, but thts not gonna happen ;) As for the entire Oscar thingie, for me personally, it sucked. It was more like watching Manikchand's Bollywood award. WTF so many other movies which were really good, but everything got overshadowed by Slumdog. Also, I think slumdog was an O.K movie. Apart from the catchy name, and the 1st quarter (upto the paperplanes train scene) the rest was an allrite story. It was the most twittered about movie tho, so a lot of people hv been talking about it since its release. And the chick left her finance after the success of the movie! LOLOL. Time for him to watch sum Dev Das. I think she was HOT! WOOT WOOT. Peace.

high school musical hero pronounced Rahman as Rakh man, with middle eastern accent. lol Kapoor 32 teeth 24/7 heeeeee , covered by overly grown moustach. Danny Boyel did not take the name of kids who also contributed to the movie but only behind the scene people. It should be in a foreign film category. It is not fully english.

I agree, Slum Dog Milli. is okay movie. And the music score A.R. Rahman has given in this movie not that great of his work if you compare his previous works. It is all media hype! There dozens of movies which are better thatn Slum Dog. Mil. in both hollywood and bollywood made in 2008. I think the director of Slum Kookoor mil. has good relation with Oscar people. why do u think guys

I love cooking conspiracies. Indians got support of the British directors and produced a movie which they KNEW would move a couple of hearts in the Western world since a movie produced by the Britian Movie Industry would make the jump from the foreign films section to the mainstream Oscar categories like 'The Best Film of 2008' and not 'The Best Foreign Film of 2008' hence taking the judges by storm (or bribe) thenceforth coming into the limelight by bagging not 1, not 2, not 3, but EIGHT frigging oscars when clearly there were other deservable suitors prove that this is a subliminal manipulation of the viewer's human celebral to be brought to accept that India is THE new star in this economic waste of a global economy hereby opening up its flood of outsourcing agents and their employees onto the rest of the world, engulfing every country, except Greenland cuz of the weather, and wrapping its imperialistic umbrella around the whole damn world later forcing natives to succumb to their supremacy and enslaving them to build a Mumtaj Mahal the size of Minneapolis smack in the middle of Egypt to symbolize their conquest of planet earth as we know it now. I suspect one A.R. Rah-man to be spearheading the operation.

I think, the movie itself was very good. I liked the plot, the acting, and the overall storyline. It wasn't something you would see everyday. Unless, you have been living in an under-developed country, you have no idea what's going on half way across the world. So, I think the journey towards the big screen, is in itself a great achievement for such a low-budget movie in consideration to other bigtime Hollywood movie (and stars, of course). I think direction played a big part in this movie - I thought the flow was really well done. At times, I felt a cold yawn developing underneath but, it never really reached its heights. So, good movie.. Good action. And, I agree - that kid shouting Amitabh Bacchan was completely hilarious - and, a sad fact about it, is that most of what we see on the big screen on Slumdog Millionaire is more or less, entirely true. A ---> I think it deserved the Oscars, maybe not all 8 (considering the hype of course, I could see that coming as well) . I remember, the first week it got released, I went ahead and searched for locations showing the movie. - 1 theater 35 miles away! To those who haven't watched the movie, go see it. Maybe you will like it :-).

I agree with devroad. The movie is good and it is not something we will see everyday in the big screen. May be for us who live in under developed countries it might not have a huge impact co'z we have seen poverty in our own countries but for the westerners the movie opens a door to a completely different world. Most people have no idea that more than half of the world's population live in poverty...and the life shown in slum is very true...we see it everyday in Nepal and we often take it for granted but for westerners it shows that while they are living their materialistic life and wasting resources there are people around the world who has to fight everyday for basic necessities such as food and shelter....while one part of the world is becoming very high tech everyday and life is becoming easier...we often forget that another part of the world is still far behind where poverty still prevails... This movie really touched my heart...hats off to those kids for their brilliant performance...
