This is the first time I had any traffic ticket.

shall I pay the fine and get the bad points on my record.

or shall I go to the court on the date mentioned in the ticket and plea ????

I want some serious suggestions regarding what shall I do.

If any of the sajha friends have gone through this ordeal personally then please help.

Thank U.

haha..a noob here. meant no offense.

i recommend going to the court and appealing not guilty of speeding, which of course you won't be able to prove. so, at the end, the judge might make you pay little lesser than what actually is on the ticket as a 'reward' of showing up at the court.

about the bad record, not a big deal brother..at least you haven't rammed your car into someone else's or not run over or tried to run away from the cops..and so on.

Be there on the court day. Just for not taking court's time, you will get almost 50% off of the ticket to pay off and leave. this way you will get less points too. If you pay in full and don't want to go to court day, you will get max points for that offense.

Don't make a mistake to skip the court date or ignore the ticket. thats the worst thing you will do in life. if incase you are not able to be there on that date, you can always request to postpone the court date. this will not harm you anything, skipping and ignoring more than 10 days will suspend your license and arrest warrant will be open .

why you want to go to court? are you "appealing not guilty of speeding"? which means cops gave you ticket which you haven't commited. if so then go to court else if you have commited the crime by driving above the state law and which exactly match with cops records then i don't understand why you want to go.

People go to court for two reason:

1. they never drove higher then state law

2. they claim for lesser ticket (for eg: cops gave you ticket for driving in 95miles/hr and you claim that you drove at 85miles/hr.......here ticket are based on no. of miles above law)

Here are a few things you could do:

1. Nowadays some counties/cities offer to take 4-hour online defensive driving class in lieu of a speeding ticket. Read your ticket properly and find out whether you have such an option. If you do, this is the best option for you because they do NOT even send any record about your speeding ticket to DMV upon completion of your course. You will still end up paying the same amount or more as paying for the fine to take this class.

2. Google for traffic lawyers near the courthouse and talk to one of them. They will charge about 150 to 250 dollars and in most cases they will find ways of winning the case for first-time traffic violaters.

3. You can go to the courthouse yourself with the ticket and talk to the district attorney (DA). No appointment is needed to talk to them but call the courthouse beforehand and ask for available times. If you talk to the DA by being calm and professional, almost always he/she will reduce your speeding miles/hour so there will be no points on your license (you will still be asked to pay for the fine though), or for the first-timers the DA may even go farther and void your ticket completely.

Good Luck!

I had three different speeding tickets in three different states in a year. I paid them all. Never went to court. I do not tell my insurance company I had ever violations. They have never known it. I pay my state required minimum liability premium $50 a month, Never been a problem.

Thoroughly review your ticket first...

Even the smallest screw up might help you...if your name has not been spelled right...age not put in right...if the officer put in the wrong street name..anything...it'll help you coz it'll by default cause your case to be dismissed at court..no fines no points taken off.

If it's not too much of a hassle actually going to court like many guys before me already mentioned is not a bad idea. You might walk out with few points/ dollars shaved off or completely waived. Also if the cop that pulled you over doesn't show up at the hearing, the case more likely will simply get dismissed. Going to court is simply about taking chances..chances of coming out on top is pretty high.

If all else fails, Like Gajjab suggested...you can always take the Deffered payment option and opt for a Defensive Driving Course...which you can take online for $25 and is like a 6 hour course. As far as i know they won't take any points off if you do this but you will still have to cough up some green -just not as much. But you will save atleast half or even more of the cost.

Hope it helps
