Dear Sajha Users,

I am doing a design project on housing for elderly in Nepal. I want to do a few case studies of old age homes. Are there any old age homes besides the Briddhasrham in Pashupati?

I will highly appreciate it if you can share any information that you have on old age homes in Nepal.

Thanks.

I could not find much information via google. I found a few papers and studies but not much detail. Do you know if these old age homes are for the homeless elderly or do families pay to keep their elderly in such places? Are they mostly widows/widowers or is married elderly couple also choose to live in old age homes?

If you have contact information for any such places, I would be grateful if you could share. Thanks.

My colleague’s parent wanted to go to the ashram near Saptokishi, the other one in Narayangadh also close to the Narayani River (Sorry could come with name). Might be one in western Nepal.

if you are really serious about doing the project call your family/relatives in nepal and ask them to inquire about aashrams in Devghaat, Dhankuta, Bhaktapur and so on. once you get enough info, you'll be set.
or ask your relatives to find tel no of the aashrams and you call them

What exactly you are planning about it? Many old peoples are neglected by family and  are living detoriated life. Once you open such home , definetly can not be run without charges. Government and puplic would not be supporting  it. We rearly donate.  How you will run it? It needs a regular flow of income.  I mean only who can afford will be residing in such asharam ?  Eager to know your plan.

Most of the elder homes are looked into with different perspective in Nepal. Old people who are there at old age homes are seen as those who are neglected by their children.Because of this concept those old age homes  are not running properly. And another biggest factor is lack of fund.
There are many old age homes, i know one is in godawari, and bhankapur .
If you search in detail, i think you can find many thesis done on old age homes. What is your thesis topic?

The whole concept of old age homes should be changed in Nepal. It should be taken as old age homes in US as heaven for many seeking freedom from family pressure and enjoy good social environment and proper ammunities to spend time and relaxed life with satisfaction and happiness as true happy times of the later part of their lives.  In Nepal, we see it  as a shelter for neglected old people without any income or property and often products of bad sons or daughters.  (NALAYAK CHORACHORI JO PARENTS KO SACRIFICE BHULCHHAN).

I think there should be some changes in “property law" in Nepal. If you acquire property that is not inherited should have no right to son or daughter other than wife. Even to wife only half of it will go to her.

Once we change, different thought will merge in young generation. No more dependent of Parents and no law suite against parents. I work had and made my life, I must have my way to live and use property.

It will change the concept of life and living style. Then you can have somebody help you or sell the property and enjoy the way you want.

Hi,

I know about an Old Age Home located in Naikap area around Thankot. One of my friends  used to go there and help elders through Rotary Club. You may contact Rotary Club of Kathmandu Sunrise. They have every Saturday meeting in Dwarika Hotel.

Thank you for your replies, thoughts, and comments.

As we know, in Nepal the elderly are cared by their siblings, and it has been so as a part of Nepali traditional value. Many cultures have embedded within them norms about respect for older adults and the responsibility of the young to care for the old when the need arises. Some countries, such as China, have even written such norms into their laws and constitution. However, in many cases even though the children may want to take care of the elderly, it might not be possible. We might all be aware of such issues in our own families.

As the economy grew and literacy levels rose in Nepal in the past few decades, women bear fewer children, and families have become smaller. This presents a problem as the younger generation are staying abroad for study and work, and aging parents are left behind with no one to take care of them.

Old age also brings fraility and special needs in doing activities of daily living. That's why an old age home with accessible living arrangements with care and support is required.

My plan is to design an old age home in the foothills of Gokarna for the elderly people in middle-class families of Kathmandu. The design goal is to minimize the costs, but still make it comparable with the assisted living facilities in developed countries in terms of accessibility and care. The developed countries have created social security, pension, and public health systems to support older adults and supplement their personal and family resources. In contrast, in many of the developing countries like Nepal, little or no such government-funded support is available. Thus, the old age home will be targeted for the elderly who want to live in Nepal, but who have no one to take care of them. Their families will have to fund their stay.

If you live abroad and worry about who will take care of your parents in Nepal, Would you send them to my old age home? If yes, what are your suggestions and requirements for such an old age home. If no, why not?

Isn't the whole of Nepal an old age home these days?. The younger generation are abroad and mostly the elderly stay there these days. Look at the politicians, do you see anyone young?.

I was checking if there are more old age home and then found this thread. I am promoting a lito based nutritious product for elderly and had been to some of the care homes in kathmandu valley. More care homes are opening every year. Some of them to list may be Orchid Care Home, Hermitage Care Home, Health Home Care.
Some are providing excellent care services while some are trying to do better.
