Folks! For few days I find that my notebook does not shut down as it does normally, and I have to press the power button to do so. It restarts just fine. I am unable to get the diagnosis, and therefore requesting for your genuine suggestions. My potential opinions are: - Something wrong with OS.
- Virus infected (however, I had done a complete scan of the notebook).
- Hijacked!
Thank you in advance.

it could be because you pull the screen down while the power cord is still connected..this sometimes causes computer to be in standby. check and edit your power options.

thanks bhikhaari bro for ur thoughts! warmly appreciated it. i doubled checked my power cord, seems it's running fine, besides the batteries have died for few months now, and have connected to the direct line. It used shut down before and don't know if it's in standby? I am still not able to analyze it

subrath, could you please provide more details. 1. Which OS are you using? (XP, Vista?) 2. When you press 'Turn off' in the turn off screen, a. it does nothing b. it goes to 'saving settings' and stops c. it goes to 'shutting down' and stops Most of these problems occur due to: 1. Hardware-OS incompatibility ( have you recently installed any hardware?) 2. wrong entries in registry (have you uninstalled any software or made any changes to configurations?) 3. trojan, virus, adwares/spywares ( have you recently scanned thoroughly?) Use online virus scanner (not from the one installed in your machine, since viruses may remove their entries from the virus definitions of your anti-virus) 11D.

Thank you 11D. I use vista. When I press turn-off' it goes to shutting down and stops. I only do the windows update and have not installed any hardwares. Have not registered for installement or uninstallment on any kind of softwares. As you suggested I will look for online virus scanner. Currently I use avast. Any suggestions on that, bro! Appreciate for your time and thoughts.

If you can get as far as 'shutting down', it may not be a problem with viruses, rather with power down issues. The OS is unable to signal the hardware to power down the computer, although it is done with OS part. If your system reaches 'shutting down', it should not be performing any hard disk operations. Does this happen everytime you shut down, or just sometime? I suggest you to repair your registry. It resolves most of the "Windows" issues. (I use/recommend ccleaner). If the problem still persist, update your BIOS and check if you have any 3rd party power management software installed. Here's the details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927393/en-usPlease post the results after you follow these steps. 11D.

Mobile Power Option >> Settings.
There is a screen that sets what to do under each conditions. Try that.
