Hi Guys,

I wanted to set up something for my parents back home so that they could call to/ receive calls from US . I have found two options: Skype(with USB adaptor) and Magic Jack. I am not sure though how they work and all. I would appreciate if someone could suggest me if I should go for one of these or something else. Some details would help me to understand. Thanks.

my parents are using skype. i sent them skype wireless phone (cost ranges from $80- $300) which can be hooked up to a router directly (no need to open a computer) .it's more like a home phone for them. i am paying 3 bucks per month so that they can call me anytime on my cell phone or my home phone or anybody in united states and canada. if i need to call them, i use my laptop to make a connection with skype software. i could pay another 3 bucks to get a phone number for that skype phone so that i can call them from my cell phone directly but  i didn't feel necessary.  i think this is a good setup if you don't want a hassle to open your computer. i think my parents are very satisfied with skype. the connection is very good without any echo or voice lag and it connects very fast like land line. so far it's good.

Magic jack is the best. I have been using it for 1 year. It's simply the best. But you can't use it with dial up, it requires DSL.

Magic is the best. So far no problem at my home. The only problem is if you wanna call from here your family in back home need to open computer. However, I just found another VOIP device Ooma which does not required you to turn on computer all the time.Simply connect the device to the router. It cost one time fee of 200 -250 dollars. But I m not sure it will work in Nepal. It needs 384 kbs of download speed and as fas as I know the resident speed of ADSL in nepal is only 128 kbs. If anyone in sajha has sent this device in Nepal, please let me if its works or not.
