On a daily basis I keep getting these emails on protest programme organized for the prime minister (of) Nepal.

With democracy we have earned this right for protests and it can only be sustained with free speech. Even though a leader is doing everything right, we can only keep him/her on check by keeping the leader on their guards.

In those terms, I support the program.

However, since there is no precedence of a massive opposition of the head of state of Nepal, atleast in New York, I do question what was the need to do it now? I am glad that students are taking interest in Nepal’s politics and I am never going to tell them to back down. But, shouldn’t criticism be constructive? Or are we simply forwarding our agenda and our influence?

I don’t know much about Mr. Nepal, other than the fact that he had tried numerous times for the position. He finally got the position, ironically after loosing the election on his own constituents. Other than changing his last name from Upadhyaya to Nepal to reject the influence of the caste system and organizing pre-democracy rally underground, I cannot point out to one quality that he has that stands out.

Is he the best leader in Nepal? Not even close.

Does he have the best track record? He doesn’t even have a track on this level.

But is he the biggest villain Nepal has who deserves an unprecedented protest rally? Maybe not.

He didn’t stage a coup and got this position. He doesn’t have the blame of killing thousands of Nepali people in the name of revolution, nor was he mercilessly suppressing the revolution.

Is he to blame on constitution delays? He just got the position for God sake!!

Is he to blame on growing Indian influence? That had started way way before his time! Even the PM before him didn’t do much to end that.

My conclusion?

I do not condemn the protest rally, this is exercising the freedom of speech. But don’t ask me to support it unless you give me a good reason to partake on this unprecedented event.
