****1/2 * the director and the writer has used their creative freedom very wisely; the movie encounters our logical nerve but does not leave it handicapped. i would have loved the movie in 2D as well. the avatars in this movie were awesome. a lot of novel ideas, yet logical and simple to understand.
*this movie shows everything that the general public would want to watch in a movie. it is unfathomably interesting how it shows future-than-present war-birds go head to head against the more manual-natural avatars and their rides.
*for me, however, it was rather interesting to see how Americans loved this movie. Something similar happened here. Too bad, movies are just movies though.

AVATAR is BIG. Visuals are new and improved. Story is appleaing to everyone (even girls told me they loved the movie). 3D is a new experience altogether. YOU HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE!!! Go watch it in 3D (IMAX if possible). You'll thank me later.
For those who are complaining about this movie for whatever reason, they are pessimists. Their life is doomed anyway.

On the second thought... I bet those blue and green characters on the English "Avatar" are actually nothing but Godly images of Hindu deities with their various avataar (transformation). I'm sure they will make those connection soon somewhere in India/Nepal. I won't be surprised.

LOL @Mr. Hyde ...
Indeed, AVATAR is a must watch ... and in IMAX 3D if it is an option.
I have only one questions though .... why do Na'vi have African accent when they speak in English?

I find the movie worth waching in 3D. It is a good movie, not an extraordinary one. Plot is nice but over fantacized like cartoon for kids. Same plot could have been more realistic. I think it is over expensed movie.
As for James Cameron Judgement day and Titanic was far more better than this one. Anyway I am not much a fan of SiFi movies.
@Jareko paat. In a public radio interview James told that the Navi characters were influenced by some of the tribes in Africa and Amazon. May be that is the reason behind the African accent.

It worths watching AVATAR in 3D rather than watching on 2D. It somekind revels current situation of western world to middle east (just my observation). Anyway you would love the beautiful imagination of scenery as well as the Natural tie of species in supreme harmony.

If you cannot fathom the world that exist in video games and animation, you'll definetly NOT value this movie. After all, adult Nepali think they are meant for kids and usually ignore them to cover up their ignorance. Go watch some pixar movies and buy a Playstation to work your brain muscles before you jump to a conclusion. If you think Titanic was better than this one, you need to stick with your Bollywood crap. The only reason you liked Titanic was the emotional love drama along with Celion Dion's "My heart will go on" song. Damn, I used to hate that song. It had everything Hindi except for shiny clothed choreographed backup dancers. So please...critique wisely when comparing two different genres. With Avatar, James has changed the history of movie making with his grand vision of mixing virtual character with real world artists souped with CGI and special effects to give minute details if you happen to watch in 3D. It has a descent story line, a very strong global political message comparing West Vs the rest. Was it worth 200+ million dollar, absolutely. Go watch in IMAX 3D (not just regular 3D), that is the best. Nothing can beat this movie for "special effects" category for this year's Oscar, period.

FYI Titanic won 11 Academy Award and and is the highest grossing film ever. I am not comparing two different genres but two movie written and directed by same man. scroll up and read my post one more time please. By the way a person's intelligence or stupidity is not judge by the movie they like but by how they interact wih other.

What's so big deal about Awards? If you've followed Hollyhood, it is pretty obvious, the awards are nothing but political, more like fashion trend of the year. This year it is "blacks", next year it will be "gay" , then we saw "Indians" last year, next it will be "Palestine". Who knows. Just because it has won so many award does not make it the best movie. For most American, Titanic is NOT their best movie. There are better movies out there, masterpiece, classic and cult classic like Star Wars, 2001 Space Odyssey, Godfather, Gone With The Wind, and many more. FYI, 1951 "All About Eve" got 14 Academy Awards. Big deal. Nobody know that movie now. Anyway, what do I care. It's your choice. I was merely bothered by your statement "kid's cartoon", which to me reminds of Nepali who think animations, video games are nothing but few scribbles on the paper and it is not a real talent or a movie. Grown up who thinks movie without songs and dance are not real thing. By the way, who exactly judge a person's intellectual level with movie trivia? Not me. Take it easy

I don’t want to do this, you drag me into this so let me make myself clear about few things. Where did I mentioned that Animations and Cartoons does not need any talent? Or James Cameron has no talent?
Where did I say movie without song and dance are not real thing. It is your prejudice about all the people (Nepali) who doesn't agree with you or have similar choices like yours are dumb. I might not be expert in animations, visuals, or technical aspects about graphics but I know the differences.
In my statement "Plot is nice but over fantasied like cartoon for kids." I am comparing fantasy with cartoon just being relative nothing absolute. I love to watch cartoon with my son but all of them are over fantasied.
I said I like the movie but is not the extra ordinary one. I would have rather enjoyed "Up in the Air" than watching "Avatar" (Thats me, I don't like Sifi movies)
I just wanted to say that I love the storyline and wanted to watch same in more reality based theme nothing else. I do watch lot of movie all genres, diff language, lots of them. Am I different than any of you guys that I do not enjoy Science fiction to drama? What the choices of genres has to do with being Nepali, I don't get it???
I beg you just appreciate what others are trying to say, be open to critiques whether you like it or not. You might think what did I say. See here. I compare two movies written and directed by James Cameron but why you pointed out only Titanic because you knew that you can target me with all the bollywood drama stuffs and that.
And I am not the one who wrote about he Oscar's in the first response. What you wrote was "Nothing can beat this movie for "special effects" category for this year's Oscar, period." And in the next one Oscar has all the politics behind it. Which one is true? Oscar is authentic or it is all politics behind it?
Lastly, how many American (like yourself) did you surveyed to find which is their best movie. If you could please provide some statistics it could be very helpful for some folks who are media or film major.
Well well Mr. American. I like all Singing and dancing in the movie like all other Nepali and I am proud to be one.
Thanks for reminding me that I am a Nepali.

AVATAR is a great moviegoing experience period. It is not a cerebral drama. It is pure entertainment. The story is not great but at least it does not followed the cliched path of making the aliens the bad guys who come to earth to conquer us. It taps on the geopolitical issue of human encroachment of natural resources. Award or no award, it is a good movie. The CGI is mindblowing. And unless you are able to see it in IMAX 3D, you are missing out a lot. If you don't like CGI, don't like scifi and are looking for a good story, then see INVICTUS (which has been sadly overshadowed by AVATAR).
As for bollywood, the song and dance routine is still necessary as a major fraction of Bollywood market is still the small towns and villages.

I haven't seen a Bollywood movie in 4 yrs with an exception of Slumdog Millionaire which people can argue about being a bollywood film or not. So this year I was trying to find some good bollywood movies to watch and when I googled I found some of directors choice movies and I was amazed by how much the Bollywood Directors admired Avatar. Karan Johar : “I actually have four favourite films this year. Kaminey, Paa , 3 Idiots and Avatar. All four raised the bar for filmmaking. But while the first three were for me aspirational, Avatar was unachievable. Imtiaz Ali : “Avatar is my favourite film of 2009. It made an important point about our civilization in a subtle manner and with the most powerful audio-visual.” Sanjay Gupta : “This question is redundant for anyone who has seen Avatar.” Mani Shankar : “Avatar, for its pantheism, its special-effects and soul. And Love Aaj Kal for its screenplay and performances.”
Hansal Mehta : “Avatar is my favourite film of the year. With this film the awe of the big screen returned for me. I felt like a wonder-stuck kid all over again. It’s been a great year for Hindi cinema too. 3 Idiots, Dev D, Rocket Singh and Wanted were my favourites.”
Apoorva Lakhia : “Avatar. It was just an out-of-the-world experience. Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year. It was simple, unpretentious and Shimit Amin worked wonders with the characters.”
Sajid Khan : “Avatar. It wasn’t a film. It was an experience. I’ve seen it five times already. Going back for it.” Govinda Nihalani : “Ghabricha Paaus in Marathi for its simple and effective style, originality of screenplay, humour steeped in pathos, deep compassion and humanism, it is an ode to the spirit of struggle to survive with dignity in the most hostile circumstances. Paa...for being a deeply moving experience, sensitively directed avoiding mushy sentimentality and an unforgettable performance by Amitabh Bachchan. Avatar for its game-changing technology and good theme.” Kunal Deshmukh : “It would have to be 3 Idiots. I haven’t felt so positively about a film in a long time. It taught me how far ahead we filmmakers are when it comes to putting heart into our themes. I also thought Avatar was awesome. Just like Star Wars it ushered in a new era in special effects. No one would ever want or dare to watch Avatar on a DVD, let alone a pirated DVD. Both 3 Idiots and Avatar made me think about what I should make next. I can’t dare jump into anything half-baked.” Ram Gopal Varma : “Avatar is by far one of the best films I’ve seen in my life. James Cameron is God. In fact, he’s gone a step ahead of God by building a world that even God couldn’t imagine. After watching Avatar I felt I belong to a primitive filmmaking world.”
These are just Ten well known Bollywood Directors, no one asked for their perspectives here but just wanted to put down the comments from the people in the same field and from our region. I couldn't find reviews from Nepali Directors. I went to the movie myself and being this long a film I was sad that it ended. I was glued to my seat. This is a very nice movie, just don't make it a political issue or tree huggers film with just some outlying opinions from some resentful reviewers. And FYI I cherry picked only the reviews from bollywood directors who mentioned Avatar.
