What would be the consequences of not paying hospital bill? Does it affect your credit history? How long does it take to be cleared up?

Contact your hospital and tell them your real situations. Some hospitals may have waiver policy and some discount or installment policy. You don't need to pay more than $10-25depending amount and agreement. Hospital bill can be stopped to be reported to credit company if you give reasonable reason for being late to pay.

Most of the cases if you prove you are below the average income level and obviously no insurance may be able to get some financial assistance or put you on sliding scale. Advised to be proactive.
