I've recently come to realize that my diet, since I came to the US, has been predominantly processed food and genetically modified food. From meat and  vegetables to canned food and fast food, almost all the food I've been eating wasn't grown organically. Most people I know in the US have similar diet. I am planning to change my eating habits and eat as much organic food as possible. Has anyone made a conscious effort to eat organic food? What places do u shop at? I've heard that stores like Whole Foods have a good selection of organic products. How affordable is the decision to eat organic food? Please share your experiences.

Eat lot of vegetables and cut back on processed food. Anything you cook at home is good. Why would I wanna pay $6/lb for a organic chicken when I can get regular chicken for $2/lb.

Going organic in US can be pretty expensive.

I try to eat home cooked food as much as possible and try to avoide processed food as much as i can.

Eat chipotle - No hormonal growth meat there - atleast what they say

dude....you have been mislead by these companies and stores trying to sell their products by tagging them as organic food.
every food you eat is organic, you WON'T find a food item that is not genetically modified. everything you get in the market is modified in some way and engineered food products are not bad, in fact, they are better (more nutrients and/or better taste)

i'd suggest you to eat more fruits and vegetables, and cut down consumption of meat. eat natural sources of carbs (like rice) instead of fast food items like pizza, chips, and burgers.
avoid soda, beer, and other high glucose containing drinks as much as possible.

i eat daal, bhaat, tarkari always (except once in a while when school kicks by butt real hard), and eat fruits and eggs quite a lot.
i eat meat once in 2 weeks or so and avoid fast food items (i've been in the States for 2.5 years and still haven't gone to McDonald's even once!)

You don't have to spend a big buck to stay healthy, just buy normal groceries, "organic" is just a buzz word (to attract customers).

Great topic!

Here is a cliche, better quality always costs more. Eating right is good for the body, soul (mood) and long-term health prospects. So it should be worth the cost.

For a lot of people going 100% organic can be quite prohibitively expensive. The article in the link below might help you in your decision to pick and choose your organic food staples:
11 things you should buy organic

As for people, who doubt the food item marked as 'Organic' may not be actually organic at all, my suggestion would be to shop for them at major grocery stores from reputable/recognizable brands. Look for seal of USDA Organic certification on any such products before you pay.

I try when I have enough money. I shop at a store called New Seasons, but it's a local store.

For meat, I try to get organic as much as possible. One reason is ethical. The animals in many of these farms are inhumanely treated. Check out the brand you  buy and try finding more about them. Going more local is one way of countering this - because it's local farmers sellig meat and not those huge mass-production farms. The other is the quality. If the chicken you eat is fed properly, gets lots of sunshine, and is free to wander and roam around it is certainly better than those that are locked up tightly in cages and eat very cheap food. We get from out meat what is fed to them eventually. So, I eat less meat but try to buy good organic meat or from local traders.
