Due to the infringement of privacy laws that protect the residents of this great nation, Association of Nepalis in America otherwise known as the ANA has been slapped with a class action lawsuit by Nepalis whose private information were publicly published by ANA executives in order to gain votes for the upcoming election.
15 named plaintiffs have filed a class action lawsuit alleging that ANA has circumvented their privacy by publishing private information of few thousand people via third party websites. One of the plaintiffs has stated that this is a breach of trust upon her private information such as her phone number and email.
In a similar lawsuit against AOL in 2008, users whose private information was posted by the ISP knowingly were awarded a gross settlement of $2.8 million. It is uncertain if ANA will be able to pay that sum. The plaintiffs' lawyer Donna McFeren has indicated that ANA has fixed assets such as land that is valued at over a million USD. "We respect people's privacy in our country, and we will enforce that." she said in a phone interview.
Next year's ANA has been postponed until further notice.
This just in!!! We have just received information from a reliable source within the ANA body that ANA executives and board members are now scurrying to sell their assets and send the money back to Nepal in case they have to pay the settlement.
