I miss Nepal.

I don't miss the Nepal that exists today. I don't miss the chaos. I don't miss the cynicism or the disillusionment. I don't miss the dust or the pollution. I don't miss Nepal banda's or the lack of water.

I miss my childhood memories. I miss time spent with friends, festivals, shooting the breeze on Saturdays waiting for Variety Variety to come on Nepal Television. I miss the simplicity.

I miss being content hanging out with friends at school and not having a care in the world. I miss conspiring with my siblings and friends to eat titaura without getting caught.

I miss the Indian bringing "Amitabh Bacchan chocolate." Do you guys even know what that is? It was like this pink taffy stuff that the the Madhesi would pull from this big stick...in wads.

I miss buying the crap from the Madhesi in the dhoti that would bring the toys propped up on bamboos. He used to have the yellow colorful fans blowing in circles in the wind.
At different times I bought his watches, the whirlwind fan that you ran with, the snake that when you put on the ground ran--and then when you yanked up it would roll up in its string.

i miss bombay laddu, and those chana chatpat.
i miss selling old stack of newspapers, and books, and the old "chappals", and in return, getting few bucks or a cheap plastic toys.
I miss flying kite from the roof tops, and mixing "manja" to try ruling the neighborhood sky. and yell at the opponent "Babache" dhago chod, even though he's a mile away. i miss the holidays, and the festivals, especially Dashain, and Tihar. those moments still takes my breath away.
"a vana mera bhai ho---deusi re"
i miss all those little games, we played as kids. also, the shows on Nepal TV on saturdays.and many more...

Vuttro_jasto,

Great memories. Ok what you wrote brought some more memories.

Playing langur burja, gutcha (marbles), cheating at playing taas (cards), playing kowra during Bhai Tika, beautifying the house and putting white 'footprints' during the house for Laxmi Puja, driving around Kathmandu during Laxmi Puja to see the whole city lit up.

Yes definitely, playing bhaisi. Flying kite and yelling all kinds of nonsense to the other kite flyers "Teen dharke changa ko dhago chhod!" Ha ha ha. Thanks for reminding of this.

Playing gatta with my cousin sisters. Playing that game were you made a circle in the dust and spun a top in it wth a thread...trying to knock the other guy's top out of the circle.

What is that game where you tie a rock to a string and throw it in a circle and try to break the other guy's string?

Of course playing Seven Stone, where you stack 7 stones and try to knock it off. And then play 'sekai' where you try to hit the people from the other team as hard as you can with a rubber ball :-) Good times!

@ Babal, I think it is called ghuyetro

Used to get the dariwal changa because some adult had told me it was the meanest.

On Dashain day the streets of Kathmandu would be really emptly; passersby with big tika and kids with bigger smile.

Nostalgia, often colors our memory to only the good things, but hey, who wants to remember bad things right?

Thanks Birdseyeview.

You guys remember when Kathmandu was green all over? I remember going down Chabel ko oralo towards Maharajgunj, my legs splayed apart in my bicycle, feeling the breeze blow through my hair, my open shirt flying behind me, a big smile on my face. All those fields were green. Women fariyas wrapped around their thighs and knees in paddy fields bare feet with sacks on their back. Smelling the rains that had hit the rich brown freshly dug up Kathmandu soil. My bicycle flying over the bridge with the river going underneath.

This was a time before pollution, and before there were tall houses everywhere. Whichever direction I looked, blue mountains (we called them hills) on all sides. Untill I came to America I didn't even have a concept that you could look around and not see mountains.

@ babbal khate ..... "Untill I came to America I didn't even have a concept that you could look around and not see mountains. "  I had very similar feeling when I came to UK.... not seeing hills around is depressing in a way for someone who grew up at the foothills of Nagarjun....

One of my favourite past time during winter break was to go to the balaju Industrail district to hang out with frens..... and end up at baisdhara for "kafal" as snack... and some gym and army training...... oh those days......

I miss screaming "Ayo Ayo" "Ayene Ayena jaali jaali ayo" at my father who would be fixing antenna at the top of the roof to get better TV reception.

I miss watching Barbapapa that NTV boroadcasted.
I miss those days when we would be making pocket money selling "khali sisi purana kagaz falam ko tukra" to the madhesi
I miss watching my mother and sister bargaining the price of tarkari with the madhesi who used to bring it around in a budo cycle.
I miss listening to nepali pop song, especially crossroads first album, touch 1 album with various artist etc.
I miss those friday nights when we would all finish up dinner to watch antakshari, philips top 10 and zee horror show.
I miss those Sunday nights when Nepal TV show that would air knightrider, street hawk, air wolf, flash, auto man, MI5, dempsey and makepeace.
I miss those winter holiday sun basking session with badam and suntala and bhogatey.
I miss hanging around the top floor of Super market, drinking tea, smoking churot and talking with friends for hours.
I miss going to bakery cafe in new road because my friend's crush was going to be there with her friend gang of friends and neither of us having enough money to order anything from their menu.
I miss akash bhairab momo cha, tip top samosa, eden garden restaurent.
I miss those days when I used to buy pirated cassettes, musical albums, from stores that would have album cover made of photo they took of the original cover....

more to come

Hetterika! 'Amitabh Bacchan Chocolate' bhaneko tyehi ta ho ni!! I used to like to eat that and the fus-fuse yellow and pink cotton candy like one that the madhise would bring in a glass cube box. Oh And also eating baraf from the guy who used to push it down the streets. My parents would totally freak out if they knew we ate that. And now that I think about it, the water with which they made that was probably really nasty. :-)

Did your parents ever tell you not to eat titaura? They used to say, "Ha-re, ke khako tyo? Tna lai Thimi ma banaeko thau ma lagchhu...tya naak ko singan bhaldai muchh chhan tyo titaura" :-)

Awww. That's sad. For a young boy, that's as sad as it gets. You seem to have really good memories. I enjoyed reading what you wrote.

Some of my best memories was riding my bike around everywhere. I rode my bicycle (it was nothing fancy) around like a jet plane around the neighborhood, flying over potholes, braking and making the cycle slide on the dirt. How easy it was to be happy when you're a kid, huh?

Ha ha ha...that's what I call dedication!

On Saturday noon, i used to watch NTV and hear impatiently to those ladies saying  : "अप्रान्ह २ बजे, हिन्दी कथानक चलचित्र "मोहोरा", यस कथाका मुख्य पात्रहरु अछय कुमार , सुनिल शेट्टी आदी "..I then used to ask one of friend who had watched that movie @ "कुमारी हल " ..

म: बिबेक यो फिलिममा फाइट छ कि छैन यार ?
बिबेक : खत्रा फाइट छ यार । लास्ट फाइट त झन बबाल छ ।
म: ए , हो र ? ल मोज हुने भयो ।

...then go out and watch my Dad play  "पप्लु" for little bit and come back at 1:50 pm when क्रिस्टी मैनाली  is saying "मेरो पनि टायर मा गोरखली टायर छ ".

I think i share similar experiences with everybody above.
Here are some of mine:
- Holi, roaming around like a little terroristas with water balloons in the neighborhood
- Guccha-play, the one where you drew a long rectangular box on the ground
- Gambling  Phalash (Flush), langur burja, wresting cards etc
- Forgot the name of the festival but we used to block traffic for donations
- This is more of a terai thing where I used to visit my uncle, we used to go seek donations for Saraswati puja
- Monsoon season and how miserable we were trying to catch the school bus
- SLC results day and how the neighborhood lit up comparing their kids' percents
- Dashain!!
- Deu-sire with traditional instruments and then  with western
- Trying to learn the guitar and really sucking at it to this day
- Being a b-hune, I remember trying to hide the momo breath right around the time my parents would get back from work.
- Went to AVM till 10th grade, we used to skip classes to go to chobhar, daksinkali, zoo etc

Glad to hear we still cherish those memories.
Just feel bad that we did know we could lose all that one day.
We sold it all.

I taught my son the other day to make that chakra out of beer bottle cap. May be he will teach his son. All in this great amrika!
