Well if you have not made up your mind yet why would you go to australia on a student visa from usa. May be a pr or sth of that sort would be nice instead of a student visa?

Contact to the university you want to apply and get i20, after you get all the papers from university apply for visa in Australian consular here in US. Good luck.
