 Hello All,

Im sure some of us will be travelling home to see our loved ones this winter and we all know travelling back and forth from Nepal is not pleasurable sometimes. A few of our own mistakes here and there, immigration, dealing with airport officials, corrupt mofos, delays and missed flights, documents problems, luggage, customs etc..It is easy to forget something when we are super busy so lets compile smart travel tips (specifically Nepal travel), things we should keep in mind, areas we should be extra careful and share experiences of mistakes (so we can avoid in the future) and smart moves that will make us more knowledgeable so that everybody's travel experience will be filled with only good memories.

I personally had bad experience in Frankfurt. If possible , avoid this airport too.

If at all possible, avoid Tribhuvan International Airport.  It was voted one of the 10 most hated airports in the world.

Any of the airports/routes is better than Kathmandu airport but we have no choice. We always hate Indian airports but in reality Kathmandu airport is extremely worse than any airport including Indian airports. Don't you agree with this fact?

I am not talking about runway. I am talking about the management, staffs their attitude, criminal acts and handling of your luggages.

AVOID LONDON!!!
First, there might be visa issues. Second, they will only allow one luggage.

hussain_khan, no i dont agree. ktm airport may be less maintained, but atleast i dont have to wait hours and hours and hours until 15 mins before the departure time to get my boarding pass(which was the case in delhi) both going in/and coming out of nepal. Also, lost my luggage both times!! They also changed my flights.wtf

Ok, my post earlier was a joke.  I hope it made you laugh.  If not, sorry.  So, in all seriousness, here is my input:

If you fly on Virgin Atlantic, you will be allowed only one check-in luggage per person.  They are also very strict on the carry-on bag's weight.  So be sure to check their website before packing.

I believe if you fly Gulf or Qatar or Etihad, you will still be entitled to 2 check-ins.

I really don't recommend Gulf Air.  First, they discriminate against Nepalis.  During my last flight, their business class was empty.  So, they picked white passengers from the economy class and upgraded them.  Nepalis haru hereko herekai.  Second, if you do get complimentary hotel for overnight layover in Bahrain, they will put you in 2 star hotel.  Which is fine, but at the hotel, they don't let you eat at their restaurant with the meal voucher.  You will be directed to a room in the back with limited buffet of leftover Indian food from their main restaurant.  I took it as a lesson on how Nepali untouchables might feel back in Nepal.

London Heathrow Airport is pain in the arse.  It is huge.  Takes a long time to go from one terminal to another.  It will be torturous if you have to carry an infant because for some reason they do not allow the stroller to be collected outside the aircraft.  And if you have a connecting flight in less than two hours, you better haul arse.

Having travelled quite a lot, I recommend spending couple hundred dollars more and fly Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific.  Service is excellent.  Aircrafts are excellent.  Airports are excellent - Singapore Airport consistently ranks #1 in the world, just the same as Singapore Airlines..  You don't have to worry about anybody stealing your luggage.  And, I believe they do allow 2 check-ins per person in economy.  Furthermore, Catha y Pacific now offers direct flight from the US East Coast to HongKong directly.  If you have booked Dragon Air from HKK to KTM, you do not need transit visa in HongKong.  This route, though not the shortest, might be the best combination of the tolerable time-wise and most comfortable/enjoyable.

By the way, lately, I have been hearing lot of good things about Delhi Airport.  I cannot say for sure because I have never flown through it.  But I heard it is very modern and no longer corrupt as it used to be.  But then, it probably also depends on which airline you are flying.  I heard Singapore Air makes sure you are comfortable even while you are transitting through Delhi Airport.

Just my 2 cents.

After travelling through gulf air, I agree with nepali-american.
At any airports, be sure you have evry documents. You wont have any idea what they can ask.

@peaceinheaven @stifler @pinpoint
I think the "1-Luggage" rule depends upon the airline itself. As far as i know, Virgin Atlantic will charge you extra for luggages > 1 ( around $60). It is so becasue -  If you are going through London transit you have to change the plane most probably to Gulf Air on London. Golf Air will allow you to have 2 luggages though.

Checking the airline/travel agent would be the best idea.
