Life in America is:

1. Free
2. Eye-opening
3. Fun
4. Challenging

How you define the words is up to you.

"Phulko aakha ma phulai sansara, kada ko aakha ma kadai sansara" (exceptions apply)

When I was little I used to hear my brother saying, " American life, japanese wife and UK suit, Chinese food". Now, I have been to those countries and have a test of everything except marrying japanese woman but I know how hard it is to be a husband of japanese woman (some of my friends and relatives have married to japanese).

For me, life in America is like a reindeer trapped in a quagmire. The more he moves to free himself the more he goes down. There is no santa around to save him. I feel  opportunity, freedom and democracy is hoax. Economic downturn, monumental debt problems, political gridlock making me lose my faith in this political system. At the end, its not Asia's rise or globalization making me think this way, may be I have just begun to realize how wonderful life is back home.

Life here is good IF -

1. You can truly free yourself from the tangles of Nepali society and get to decide on your own what is good, what is bad. eg - become INDEPENDENT.
2. REALIZE that Nepali/Dhoti para will not work with the KHAIRES, that you WILL HAVE TO, at some point in your life, expand your outlook to include their history, so that you will get things in context when they say something.
3. Simlar to #2,  you need to understand the cultural cues that are given out here. For that, its going to take time and exposure to western media/films/songs.
4. Rise above peer pressure. This is easier said than done. Very true if you hang out with lots of other nepali friends.
5. STAY IN STATUS. Its not that hard! Just don't try to take shortcuts and end up fking yourself up. Life is a challenge everywhere except if you were born into a rich and stable family.
6. SPEND WHAT YOU EARN - This is something I feel we think about differently. Save up as much as we can is our general consensus. Works if you have a family to support, but if you're in America as a student, chances are you are by yourself! SPEND DAT MONEY BOI! No therapy like retail therapy! This country is built on consumerism. If you aren't scared to spend your money on products, you can reap the benefits of using it. I don't mean goto a strip and make it rain, i mean fees and charges and service charges and what not. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, SPEND DAT MONEY! Might be worth the time and effort it takes you to do the same thing. IF YOU WANT A GOOD WEBSITE, SPEND DAT MONEY AND EMPLOY SOMEONE!!
7. Open your mind! Especially guys! If an American girl is flirting with you, GOD DAMN, flirt right back! Only here you will get the OPPORTUNITY of having a girl who wants to just FK YOU without strings attached! I've seen a lot of guys become SHY! FK THAT. There is no shame in coming from Nepal. We are the best country in the world and our accent is 1000 times better than dhotis. As for having little money, confidence will cover up for that fact! GO!

Life here is bad IF -
1. You were a spoilt brat back home and cant live like that here. FK OFF :D
2. You only dare to work in a gas station/indian restaurant and not take a chance to mingle with theother folk.
3. Donot realize that you will probably meet very few "real americans" and actually meet a lot of people from ALL OVER THE WORLD!
4. Donot laugh at yourself! Face it! You are a funny character. People will eye you when you walk down the street just because you look different. Laugh at your situation. It will make you bolder. But if you dont, it will drag you down. I had this friend who got paranoid of bars because everyone stared at him. It was true, and they stared at me too, but after 2 visits, they didn't even care! Boom!
5. Your body is here, but your mind is elsewhere! Houston to mind, Houston to mind, come in mind. We have a problem here!

It depends on who this question might be directed to.

To say the least and to sum it all up...life is challenging here in the US. But amidst all my struggles, failures and successes, I have learned to look at the brighter side of things, appreciate friends and family, give back to my community, and to stay strong and believe that without trying, I'll never quite know. I think I've learned quite a bit for my age, so to speak.

Happy Holidays!

Cacophonix, though I don't agree with everything you said, I think your attitude is right on. I feel you're taking the right approach. Very positive, pro-active and a go-getter attitude.

It depamds on how do u define
Life n Happiness.
1. U r in USA : U already secured top position ( if u think Prime minister is happier because he is PM, but he might forget the happiness of becoming PM and sad because of tremendous tension .)
2. If u give more importance to your personal life and comfort u achieved, then u would be happy here, u r living in the county where u can get whatever u want if u have money to spend. n compar with Nepal water, electricity, pollution n security ( although u feel more unsecured here with gun, u can say Nepal is unsecured )
3. And finally if u give more importance to become important man among own society, u r no-man here, u would be too happy for small achievement among your known family n society. Nothing give you more happyness other than sharing your happyness with your near n dear family n friends.
4. Migration already made your life complex, returning back to Nepal is like abducting position of PM ( your society does not like it) and but it is also a way of getting happyness in life if r metally prepared to go back to Nepal.
5 American life is best if n only if u r american by blood n heart. U will be american because u live in america or have green card/citizenship.

Cacophonix and dbst, you guys have made some excellent points. As a whole let me put it this way, " life in america is like getting on the back of a lion and its more dangerous to come off".

I'm sorry to hear that druggist bro..
just realize ourself from cosmic perspective.. look at this universe, vast galaxies, then through milky way, then through millions of solar systems, there we've our tinie-minie solar system, then out of it our planet earth and then continents, whatever continent, zoom in and see yourself in one small apartment and you are so busy troubling yourself with so called big problems of yours.
where are we?? and what our problems?
sooner or later our destiny is to become dust.. from physical perspective of our existence..
just realize how insignificant we are and our problems are ..

just try to give some time to yourself, try to cheer up , lfie is not to be wasted but to contemplate wondrous..

it's just not worth to be sad and unhappy you know??

try to keep your spirit up..

Right on Bittertruth bro!  Right on!  The BITTER TRUTH for humanity in general is  that we forget to look the big picture, and are too congested by own little worthless self-created (most of the time) problems.
