I could not throw my old Dell Dimension desk top. I wanted to use MS word and internet use only.
40 gb hard drive only 16 gb is used.
786 Mb Ram
2.6 mhz intel processor.
Window xp home edition.
I added Norton internet security.
Office 2007 - word execl and powrpoint.
Firefox for internet.
Advance care system 3 to clean internet usage and fix registry.
It has Essential Security too.
Added Wireless usb to get the internet.
And Printer.
My Question is : If I work on two different program it slows, it took more than 2 minutes to open intenret.
What should I take off to make the internet faster and can work on word? I am tplanning to make it 1 gb memroy.

I would get rid of norton internet security, advance care system and install microsoft security essentials. Its a lightweight antivirus made my ms, so works pretty well. I would increase the RAM to at least 2 gigs as anything below that would be too painful to use. I am sure you can find good deals on ebay for such an old ram.

In past I tried to put 1 gb ram on each slot, did not take it. Now it is hard to find as well costlier. May go up to 1 gb in total if I am lucky to get one.
Some of the program consumes 90% of the processing , specially the anti-virus one.
So, I will keep the essential, dumped the Norton, dupmed the Office 7 suite and put only word and keep advance care system.
Let see how it works?
Thanks

In order to get Microsoft Security Essentials, make sure your XP is loaded with at least SP2 and as per your config, I don't think it can handle SP2 very well anyway.
Avast is free and low on resources.
no offense, my cellphone is more powerful than your computer.
It's time to upgrade to totally new system, not just parts. Parts are ancient and it cost you dearly since it's ancient.
All internet is about HD video and layouts out there demand more processing power, there is nothing you can do to speed up your system, it's ancient.

I understand: Could not throw away but wanted to log on internet securely . That is what I wanted.
I have 4 gb ram in my other computer, once in a while some exe file consumes 60-70 percent of the processor resources which i monitor by advance care system.

if i were you i would format and install ubuntu...since u just want to surf internet!! don't need to install MSE norton or any shit and it takes less space too and doesn't clog as windows.. RAM doesn't determine the speed of comp!! it's just that the clock speed of ur machine is very less..

alece is right, Ubuntu is a great OS.
Personally, I like GNOME one.
If you don't want to go through all the hassle, Ubuntu can be had on CD as LIVE CD as well.
You can simply boot off of it.

Okay;
I will reformat the desktop, download widow xp home and run internet.
Once I am able to go internet I will download Ubuntu 12.4, which is virus free.
Do I need to delete the xp system or leave it as it is?
My question is , am i still able to use some of my old software ? not all are compatibe , is that right?

why would u reformat the desktop, download window xp then download ubuntu and then install!! just download frm your frens comp or anyone and when u do the installation u will be given the options to either partition your drive for installation or do the full installation.. deleting the xp system is ur choice!! bt u said u have only 40 gb which is again very minimal..i would only install ubuntu!! and about the compatibility i wrote above to make ur old softwares work in ubuntu..

Saathi mhz hoina ghz holaa.. I think it's a 2.6 ghz single core intel pentium processor...if I were u, i would definitely upgrade the RAM but the problem is those old computers probably use DDR2/ SDRAMS which is considerably expensive than DDR3 rams(I know it's kinda weird that newer versions of RAMs are cheaper)...I would recommend you to check kingston website and check the kind of RAM ur motherboard takes..and buy valueRAM.. if u really wanna use that computer for some good effect I suggest u buy a SSD drive (120 gb for around $80-90) and clone ur hard drive..trust me the boot up time is down to seconds..check slickdeals for deals on SSDs ..u can use acronis to clone the hard drive ..download s/w from well thepiratebay..google it.. i am not promoting piracy but do what u gotta to do.. .. well download tixati too.. it's lean torrent downloader..way better than resource hugging vuze or other some Sh*t...hope this answers ur question..
