We have heard a lot about SSP Ramesh Kharel. How he is working hard day and night to curb the crime and criminals in Nepal, inspite of facing tough resistance from politicians who are supposed to be in his side.

His passion to uphold the law is incredible and he deserves respect from all the loving citizens of Nepal, whether they are in Nepal or outside, and his actions should be made into an example so that there are more policemen like him who do everything they can to uphold the law and to reduce the crime on Nepalis who are already victim of bad and corrupt system.

That is why, I am entertaining an idea to do a fundraiser to say thank you to SSP Ramesh Kharel, from all Nepalis living abroad, for taking good care of our motherland.

Corrupt forces are trying to stop him from the right and left but he has been standing steadfast. I think some show of support would be good for him.

How many of you support this idea? We can move forward with this if there is some interest shown.

You always hear people living abroad saying "wish I could do something for my country" but the most we end up doing is raise a donation to ease someone's pain, or pay for an individual child or few children to go to school.

Collectively we have a lot of power and we have the power to send powerful message and make powerful changes in our country.

This idea of fundraiser is not because the SSP needs the money, this would be a symbolic show of support that is enforced by an action of giving. As we have seen hundreds of facebook support pages where hundreds of thousands likes are garnered very quickly but there is no extra effort associated with it. In doing a 'thank you' fundraiser along with the support, the value of support becomes more concrete.

Even Nobel Prize winners are awarded monetary prize and that does not undermine their greatness if they accept the prize.

Taking money is looked at in a wrong way in our society due to the rampant prevalence of corruption, where money is given with the expectation of taking a favor back when needed. But this 'thank you' fundraiser does not come as a favor from anyone, but as a selfless contribution that is willingly made from thankful citizens.

Sajha has done many fundraisers in the past to support good causes such as medical needs, and social service, but never as an encouragement to support someone for doing their job well - which seems to be seriously lacking in Nepal due to various reasons. It may or may not be a good idea, and it may or may not be in line with Mr. Kharel's line of thinking, but at this point I wanted to put this idea out for discussion.

I agree with what Rahuldai said, I am not sure if raising funds would be a great idea especially when he has repeatedly mentioned that acceptance of any financial contribution would compromise the intregrity of an honest policeman.

Maybe we can influence the media (but then everyone knows about his courage and uprightness) or maybe we can write a token of appreciation for what he has done and (somehow) copy his peers and the prime minister.

Agreed. I will contribute either way, but maybe an award is better. We can call it Sajha award and give it to one person every year based on the votes.

As a token of our appreciation for doing the right thing, I am cool with delivering a nice big bouquet of flower & sweets to Mr. Kharel once a week/month/etc (based on the fund raised).

It is a well intended idea and I think you should explore it further. I doubt police regulations would allow him to accept money raised in this manner. Not to mention his own principles as others have implied. However, establishing a broader fund to recognize the achievements of outstanding police and government officials and partnering up with reputable global or national institutions to select and recognize those individuals might allow you to support people like him and also give everyone the necessary societal, legal and ethical cover. Just a thought.

why can't we do the fundraising for any equipment that he/his team could use?

I agree with WTF. Getting equipment that helps our policemen to curb violence and maintain order would be a much better gesture. Look at the breathalizers state for instance. Police still use their nose-to-mouth for curbing drink-driving.

Of course, this could all be donated on behalf of recognizing of SSP Kharel's work.

I love his effort which he is doing to maintain peace in kathmandu, I do not think he will be staying in Kathmandu because of political pressure.
SAN Dai, Yes we can give him the SAJHA awarded person of the year. Lets do fund raising for SAJHA award, we sajha users contribute and you match 50%. Lets say contribution from public 100 than yours will be 50=150 sajha award amount. Instead of saying fund raising for Ramesh Kharel, lets say contribution for sajha
award to Ramesh Kharel. Dont think me wrong I am fine either way, he is the man of Kathmandu in police force , I am ready to contribute what ever I can. I feel proud doing that.

This is the mentality that's going to set us back. If a progress is made, celebrate it and send kudos; don't criticize for not making other progress. Manange was openly attending the soccer match, that too where MPC was playing. Is Dhungel doing the same in Kathmandu? Even if he is in Kathmandu, shouldn't blame first go towards the Nepal Police and the leaders in general.

I see your point, Kharel should do more than the things that generate highlights. But let's first appreciate and encourage what he has done, shall we? Don't think these "Gundas" are street hooligans, they have far reaching connections and our leaders will jump up and down to get them out of the jail. This is not a small arrest.
