Guys I am lost and I am asking for yall's help. This is my first job and I landed it as a Linux sysadmin. The first day my mgr took me to the cube and everything was set up. He was like for the first week its gonna be a lot of reading for you. Immediately I was introduced one of the leads and he asked the mgr if I was the one who will be helping the team with Linux and .net work? I was like what?

As said I was not assigned anything for a week. But got emails pertaining to my team. Also, weird that I was introduced to a few folks as team members, but why iam getting all these emails with other names attached?

During the second week the lead sends me an email to look into the code and get help from the fellow dev to at least research how the coding debug is done. A few days later he asks me to look into the code and asks me to fix it. I sent him an email saying that I am an admin and that I couldn't do it, and may need some help from the dev. He was like okay. It' s been 3 days and I haven't sent him the reply? These are not ticket assigned though ( just look into it). Do u think the mgr might be thinking about it ir he would be like "don't matter I just wanted him to look at it".

The project is 2 to 3 years long and from what I understand the project hasn't started yet. The other day the sever mgmt mgr calls me and says that he needs to give access to servers and need to take a short interview to see my windows server skills. I told him that I was hired for the position of Linux admin and that I don't know anything about win. Since then he hasn't got back to me. What do you think they might be thinking?

The other day a fren of mine said that since the project hasn't seem to start and that they wanted me to stay occupied with something, they assigned me the .net code? Could it be true?

Also how's a typical admin team looks like? I am having to work with a lead, 2 devs, some QAs and apparently I am a dev for right now as well. I thought an admin would be given to play with servers and conf and don't worry too much about teams. For now I feel like I am also a dev.

The company doesn't have any culture. I don't know the mgr doesn't talk to me much so does the lead. They haven't even taken me for the lunch. I am anxious not being able to comprehend of how things are going.

Please help!!

Laalmon,

Typically when you go as a admin, it is understood that you have a fair to good understanding of developers work.

But do not think too much into it, if your job description was strictly for Admin job.

About managers/leads talk talking to you,its not necessarily a bad thing. Either you are doing your job or they don't have anything for you yet. It usually a bad sign when your supervisor comes talks to you.

I work as a developer and i hardly talk to my manager. Its not personal, just business!

Hope this helps!

Regards,
The Nepali.

does it hurt to google around to learn something about developer stuff?
companies prefers one to be versatile. so it's worthwhile to know things around even though you're a strictly an admin.
"बोल्ने को पीठो बिग्छ नबोल्नेको चामल पनि बिग्दैन"
keep it in mind.
Have better interaction and communication with your leads and manager,
najane pani sabai aucha jasto garnu parca and have to have can do attitude because at the end of the day everyone comes back to Google, that's how you survive long in the project,
that's what sojo keto is dong till date and enjoying having a paycheck for commenting and posting on the sajha during the office hours. :)

Bro.. I have been working as web system engineer( hired as a weblogic Admin-a kinda system admin..not really) for around some time now... i strictly work on servers, i deploy the codes, build the new environments, and troubleshoot the issues that i get within the servers and environment. Admins are not supposed to go and look into the code, if you have knowledge, that fine but developers are there to do that. but the interesting thing about admin postion is that you are right in the middle of all people, developers, database admins, QA and networking so you need to communicate accordingly and make good relations with everyone..that might come handy.. from your story, i do not feel any kind of panicking situation..that happens all the time.. i even do not sit close to my manager, my cube is in next building to my manager... so dont worry brother..keep calm and work. all the best.

@laalmon
I do understand. However at the end of the day we need a job, if a job is related to our field, awesome, if not then still we want the job. Don't we?
Ain't talking about being a pro on unrelated technology but having a fundamental knowledge ain't hurt.
