Statement Of Senator Patrick Leahy On Nepal in the US Congress on December 21, 2005 Some interesting points: (mostly verbatim) The army continues to see itself as the defender of an anachronistic, corrupt and autocratic monarchy. The political parties do not have a record of putting the interests of the nation above their own self interest. They urgently need to reform. Yet they are the real representatives of the Nepali people and there is no substitute for them. The international appeal to the King for reconciliation have failed. The Bush Administration should apply whatever pressure it can, including denying U.S. visas to Nepali officials and their families. The municipal elections announced by King Gyanendra for early next year, without any consultation with the political parties, are no solution. An attempt to apply a veneer of legitimacy to an otherwise undemocratic process will only prolong and exacerbate this crisis. There is a growing possibility that the Kings obstinacy and unpopularity will trigger massive civil unrest, shootings and arrests of many more civilians by soldiers and police, Nepals further isolation, and perhaps the end of the monarchy itself. 12 point understanding could be the basis for a national dialogue to restore democracy and end the conflict The United States should do everything possible including supporting a broadly inclusive political dialogue with or WITHOUT the participation of the palace. Full speech: - http://leahy.senate.gov/press/200512/122105f.html - http://www.blog.com.np/?p=1052#more-1052

At least someone important is putting pressure on Mr. Pyar jung Thapa. This is a clear but indirect message to Mr. Pyar jung to abstain from any mangling in the upcoming mass revolution, if he wants to live beyond autocracy.

Who is Senator Leahy? He writes few pages and he is an expert on Nepal and her political situations? If he really cared about Nepal and Nepalese, I would rather have him respond to my email about Mr. Indra Bahadur Tamang, who is awaiting his death in a foreign land. I think its time you guys wake up and see that no one is going to think for our benefit and development. I dont care much about him or his bullshit. Remember that there are no permanent friends in international politics, there are only permanent benefits, as Maggie Thatcher once put it.

one does not have to love nepal or care for nepal to write about nepal. i don't think pat leahy is a nepal-lover but so what? why can't he write about nepal? and why is he not to be believed, just 'cause he does not love nepal? that's spurious logic. i would think his views are more "neutral" than the views by people who "love" nepal.

well you are welcome to WRITE for my family. now, whether that will have any bearing on what actually happens is another matter altogether. besides, he is writing about what the US should do, not what you or me should do. American foreign policy is an American decision, not Nepali.

I wonder if Senator Patrick Leahy from Vermont, a democrat, is in favor of negotiating a 12 point deal with the terrorists that the US is fighiting!!! The Nepali political leaders are nothing but puppets of the outside world!!

Once in a different job, I had to meet a number of US Senators. My impression is that they are all wonderful people. They are great when responding to complaints from their constituencies. They are not so great when responding to problems unfolding anywhere outside of the US which does not have direct US interests. And they can do is wring their hands and try to sound a bit like a statesman. A case in point? Here is what Senator Leahy said about the Darfur (Sudan) crisis in May 2004 -- 19 months ago. "Statement Of Senator Patrick Leahy Crisis In Darfur, Sudan May 6, 2004 MR. LEAHY. Mr. President, I want to speak for a moment on the situation in western Sudan, where in recent weeks the world has witnessed the systematic slaughter of unarmed civilians and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Others here today have spoken at length about this catastrophe, so I will not repeat what they have said but I do want to join them in expressing my grave concern. The Government of Sudan is largely responsible for these attacks, as it is government-backed militias that are committing these atrocities. They have raped thousands of women, abducted children, destroyed food and water systems, and burned villages to the ground. Nearly 1 million people, almost twice the population of my home state of Vermont, have been forced to flee their homes, and nearly 3 million individuals are beyond the reach of international aid agencies. As a result, people are dying at a staggering rate – nearly 1000 per week. The situation continues to grow worse by the day, and the Government of Sudan continues to block access to this region. 110,000 people have fled to neighboring Chad, and the Chadian Government deployed its military to protect the Sudanese refugees from attack. Mr. President, we are in the process of remembering the 800,000 people who were hacked to death during the genocide in Rwanda 10 years ago. The world vowed that such horrific crimes would never be allowed to happen again in Africa. Yet we are seeing, in Sudan today, the same type of slaughter. It must be stopped." - http://leahy.senate.gov/press/200405/050604a.html ********** RESPONSE of the US Government to the Sudan crisis as of December 2005: NOTHING for a decrease in the killing of Africans by Arab bandits in the planet's ongoing genocide. Source: - http://www.radioopensource.org/genocide-in-sudan/ ******************* I mean no disrespect to Senator Leahy. I mean all the disrespect to Sajha ko senator Nepe who thinks that everything must be "a nail" for his republican "hammer", and the larger context be damned. oohi ashu

It was not terribly long ago a Nepali Al Sahaf had declared right here in Sajha, " There is no republican infidels in Kathmandu, Never." It is not clear what happened between then and now, but Mr. Sahaf was recently seen "hammering" his own head to get these words out of his tight lips, "..replace old politicians with..stridently republican ones.." And there is a standing bet from Senator Nepe to Minister Ashu- If the Minister did not change his color and declare himself a republican by the time the republic seems inevitable in Nepal, Nepe will never ever talk about politics for the rest of his life. Will Senator Nepe have to retire from his political life for good ? Time will tell.

Ashu, pershaps the reason being that curroptions and cronyism exists in the US Congress. Nothing and I mean nothing can work under the environment of curroption and cryonism. What can one expect when much of the legislation is written by the lobbyist and special interest group? This congress has reversed the balance of time, taking away from people the system of checks and balances and operating beyond what the constitution allows. This is an outright breach of people's rights and liberty by the republican controlled house and the senate.

As far as i am concerned, voice of a nepai is much more important than a whatever Leah. What does he know about Nepal's condition anyway? Sitting on ivory towers and thinking about Nepal? Shame shame puppy shame all the donkeys know your name! When a Nepali says that Nepal is not ready for democracy, i trust that for the follwing reasons: ***Bal Bahadyr KC manages to climb two storyes at midnight to rape a woman and still show every sign of winning and election *** Most of the MPs manage to import Land Rovers at discounted price and sell it to businessmen and get away with it *** Most of the male MPs claim medical expenses for child delivery The point is: forget the maths; forget the statistics. Nepal is NOT ready for democracy yet.

VincentBodega, What's wrong calling a senator important? I welcome anyone who says Nepal needs some form of absolute democracy, including those from overseas and friends or foes of Nepal. Of course I'd be cautious if it came from foes. As you must have realized, king gyane has one interest: his personal. In this context, I want him out at any cost; the sovernity of Nepal belongs to the Nepalese. About that Mr. Tamang, If he really carried the drugs for commercial purposes, I'd rather want him dead than have him later kill many many Nepalese by doping them back home. Seen many many folks like these who became millionaires overnight at the cost of lives of others and spread terror in Nepal later on. I do not buy any statements that he did not know what his landlord did before and that he could not communicate. this type of 'lato-bungo" acting is very popular among those gangs. ---- PS you don't have to show that you can cough up bad words.
