Are we? I didn't know we were RUDE......Humor aside......I think its a culture thing....we are known as fierce Gorkha soldiers...and soldiers and politeness hardly mix...I might be wrong....but I'm sure you can find politeness and rudeness in every corner of the world...even in New York...actually, a lot of them ! Those damn Yankees ! LOL

Dudes I also think it is a cultural aspect but I think the problem is socializing... we are a lot less socializing that other people. My experience tells me that people in such cities or countries are a lot more socializing that others. Kids have been taught from their childhood to be polite and socializing. What about Japan?? I thought Japanese ppl were also one of the most polite people in the world.

I read in BBC japan was also in top five but the worst city was considered as bombay.
It was basically based upon how people act in the public saying thank you, opening the door etc, i forgot the other criteria...we know we south asian are not good in doing these things....

People in Mumbai are upset - their city has been ranked rudest in the world.

India's financial capital came bottom in a survey by Reader's Digest magazine to find which of 35 cities was most courteous. New York came top.

"This survey is an insult," said one Mumbai resident Ritika Bajaj. "People here are accommodating and polite."

Cities were set three courtesy tests. Many in Mumbai, including the India editor of Reader's Digest, said the criteria were "too Western".

Sometimes people lose their cool but that's hardly reason enough to give Mumbai the tag of the rudest city

The judges' criteria were whether people opened doors for others in public buildings, whether they helped pick up papers dropped on a busy street and whether a shopkeeper said "thank you" when a purchase - big or small - was made.

Sixty such tests were performed in Mumbai.

Other Asian cities - Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur - also did badly. Zurich came a close second to New York and Toronto third.

"People are very friendly and always helping others. I also find them very approachable," she said.

Mumbai resident George Pereira says there may be rare instances when people are impolite, but that could not be applied to the city as a whole.

Advertising film-maker Prahlad Kakkar says when he first came to Mumbai years ago, he did find people rather rude.

"Coming as I did from the north, I was very surprised with the way in which people spoke to strangers. But you realise this is only on the surface and people here have a heart.

"I think Mumbai and New York are very similar in nature and if the latter ranked number one, then Mumbai is up there too."

Mr Kakkar criticised the survey for using "Western" criteria to assess politeness.

Even the editor of the Indian edition of Reader's Digest, Mohan Sivanand, agreed.

"I think the reason Asian cities have performed badly in the survey is because of cultural differences. People here express their gratitude in other non-verbal ways rather than actually saying the word," he told the BBC.

"There was an instance when we bought something from a shopkeeper in Mumbai and he smiled instead of saying 'thank you'. When asked why he didn't say the words, he replied his smiling at customers means the same thing.

Mr Sivanand adds that at least 19 of the 60 Mumbai respondents were polite to researchers. "If these 19 are to be translated in terms of the city's population, then 32% or more than 4.5 million people are polite in Mumbai.

"That is more than the combined populations of some of the cities that ranked high up in the courtesy list."

Let me take this opportunity to stress on the importance of being active. I read the article by Monica Chadha. She seems to voice similar opinions that some of us voice here in sajha with regards to Nepal being considered one of the rudest countries in the world. The major difference, however, is that we are still passive. If it really bothers you that we are considered to be one of the rudest people in the world. Do something about it. Bringing it out in sajha is definitely a good start, but end it with a punch as well by writing a rebuttal to the concerned. Its time we start being active in some of these issues.

There are many reasons why a person could be rude. In Nepal, people are so much stressed out because of their social life (too much of it) that they don't have any energy left to be polite to someone they don't know.

Most parents themselves are not in right state of mind to teach their kids. And kids only learn from their parents. And the trend continues....The trend that elders are always right, it is considered wrong to question our cultures, etc etc....So people become frustrated unknowingly and don't have enough smiles on their face leftover to show it to people.... and hence they act rudely.

I don't know about anyone else..but I just want to be.

Then, I think it is the high time that the meaning of "polite" should be changed.

As far as nepalese goes, it's just the language barrier ;) (It's a joke!)

Humbleness or politeness is not a culture; it is a character which should be developed. This development process varies from person to person. For some people, this process may never start at all due to various growth inhibiting elements such as ego, narrow-mind etc. And for some people, the process can be really slow and may never reach the full maturity (We can blame this on our materialistic world). Finally, for those people in which this process accelerates in tremendous velocity, maturity is achieved with the death of self-respect.

I think my theory about "social pressure" (in my above post) gets along with the list of most polite people in the world. The more freer the people are, the more polite they can be, because they don't have the pressure in their head that shows in their face and in their behaviour. Most New Yorkers, as we can imagine are free mined people.

anyone who's been to NYC knows how rude people are there. Maybe rude won't be the right word but unhelpful could be. I'm surprised by the result.

There are many illegal workers in NYC. And most illegal workers come from background with social pressure (again my theroy in above post). There is drastic difference between being rude and being unfriedly.

2. Lacking education or knowledge; unlearned.
3. Ill-mannered; discourteous: rude behavior.

Why Nepalese people rude?

Answer would be:

(1) They have Education But They DO NOT have quality Basic foundation of Education.

(2) Their parents are corrupt, crook, criminal mentality... So they never ever learn good manner..or civilize manner even they have higher degrees.

(3) They 99% came from or growp up in corrupt and uncivilize culture and societies - " Jasko sakti Usko bhakti ", so even these Nepalese people go to Mars or other planet, they keep their BAD MENTALITY AND BEHAVIOR in other planet. They will never ever change. Therefore, even they came to USA and educated, they will not change ever and never.

Do not quite agree with the Western values stressed judgement in Eastern cultured cities.
Aba Arab ma gayera hand-sake garena bhanera rude bhanne, Nepal ma gayera greeting wa farewell kiss deyena bhanera rude bhanne bhaye mero bhannu kehi chaina.
Taipei, one of the friendliest city lai pane western glass le herera rude bhanedeyechan, lau ja, we Nepalese are friendly people, pachdi kura kate pani...
