Well depends what is your goal. What kind of buyer are you?
Is your goal to save money? Are there certain options you are looking for? Do you want a better looking suv?
Well let me give you basics on these two cars. Well engine and safety wise you should go with toyota. If you want references on that check the consumer reports.
Toyota Rav4 comes with 2 engine sizes V6 with about 268 horsepower and 4 cylinder with about 158 horsepower. While honda only comes with 4 cyl. Toyotas v6 give you only 2 miles less per gallon than the 4cyl. so if you are looking for power go with Toyota. You will obviouly pay more for the v6.
For toyota rav4 is a hotseller so do not expect to get special finance rates from toyota if you do qualify with good credit. I believe honda has some finance incentives for 2007 model crv if they are still around. So if you want to save money go with CRV.
Toyota had a new techology on their engines VVT-i. it stands for variance valve timing with intelligence. It is better than V-Tec that is available with honda. With vvt-i you do not sacrifice lot of fuelage for lot of horse power. It produces less emmissions and has less moving parts in the engine. So less things to fix over the long run of the engine.
Here is where Toyota and Honda has major differences. While toyota is very quiet and comfortable and has soft handling. Honda has an aggresive handling and lot of road noise. In few yeas Hondas noise gets even louder and the dash board starts to rattle since it is not a one piece dash. While toyota quietness stays similar and dash board does not rattle since it is a one piece dash.
Toyota comes with 5 star safety rating which includes anti lock brakes, Electronicbrakeforce distribution, Vehicle stability control, brake assist and Traction control. They are all preventative measures. I don't know what kind of safety Honda comes with please do your own researh.
Here is a secret about toyota if you already did not know. The engines that are used on Rav4 is the same ones that are used on toyota camry. Since you know that camry are reliable cars and easily surpass 250,000-300,000 miles. Rav4 should do the same for you.
Oh last not least Toyota's cannot be marked up after being priced from tthe Manufacturer while honda can be marked up significantly with market adjustments. So beware when you buy Hondas.
Well I think this information should be sufficient for you to make a correct desicion. If you have anymore questions just ask.

actually i am in similar dilemna.. im planning to buy one of these.. i like Ravs looks but I think i prefer the CRV's reliability.
if u think all toyotas are good think again.. many of the 97 - 2001 camry's have engine problems... also some of the newer toyota's have been getting quality problems that have been reported.. i havent heard similar problems about newer honda's..
so i think i will personally go with honda crv.

of course there have to be people who like honda crv, too, or they will not sell, isn't it so, latoboy? But the most important thing for you is what do you want? I wanted power, versatility, and safety for less than 26k, so I got a rav-4 last year. I have had 11 k miles on it, and I am loving it.

Thankyou to realist, xbox, latoboy and simonsaurav. Your all suggestions were quite important and helpful to me to make a major decision. I decided to go with 2008 Toyota Rav4 4*4 Sports and the price is reasonable too. I hope I will love it. Thankyou.

Latoboy, Please do your research before you say something. 97-2001 engines is not the same one currently used by current camry and rav4. These are different engines with upgraded technology I mentioned above. The reliability difference between the crv's to rav4 does not have much of a difference. The reason you haven't heard about new crv's problem is that because tahy are just year old came out in 2007-2008. The problems will pop up. There is no cars that do not have any problem.

This might help to decide: Toyota skids in reliability rankingsAutomaker slips to fifth from first place, and some versions of Camry, Tundra and Lexus GS no longer recommended.Consumer Reports said it no longer recommends V6 versions of Toyota's
Camry or four-wheel-drive V8 versions of its Tundra pick-up because of
poor reliability.

and The survey dropped Toyota from first to fifth place - behind Honda,
Acura, Scion and Subaru - in average vehicle reliability. The rankings
are based on average predicted reliability for all models sold under a
given brand.

Editors' Most Wanted Vehicles for 2007
SUV Under $25,000
Winner: 2007 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V has been a favorite small SUV ever since it was
introduced years ago. But now this overachiever gets an extreme
makeover. And that doesn't mean super-sizing it and stuffing a V6 under
the hood. Honda still feels a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine is
the best choice, but boosted the power to 166 horses and 161 pound-feet
of torque. With fewer buyers opting for a manual gearbox, Honda dropped
that option and went with a tweaked five-speed automatic. There is
still a choice of all-wheel or front-wheel drive. With such an
attractive combination of personality and good looks, it's easy to see
why the CR-V is our pick.

Toyota Loses Top Spot in Reliability RankingsThe magazine Consumer Reports says that “bug-ridden redesigns†caused Toyota Motor of Japan to drop unexpectedly to third, from first, in its annual vehicle reliability rankings released on Tuesday. Consumer Reports removed high-end versions of three Toyota models — the
Camry and Lexus GS sedans and the Tundra pickup truck — from its list
of recommended vehicles and said it would stop recommending new or
redesigned Toyota vehicles without data showing that past years’
versions were reliabl Honda ranked first over all. I think there should be no confusion now.

Buy a 2008 Toyota FJ-Cruiser (Yellow or Blue look cool) they first came out in 2006. And 2007 and 2008 Honda and Toyota are same price so why would you want to buy a 2007??? CR-V and Rav4 have been around too long and the new model is so low it looks more like a car then a SUV.

- wichitastate - thanks for clearing the confusion.. i clearly think honda overall has better reliability... i have seen so many old model hondas and they drive great, even though inside they look old and crap..but main thing is how car runs.. and hondas have always run great.. even after sooooo many years their cars work fine and even small details like suspension.. hondas are good.. the fact or matter.. if u want car/suv for long term go with honda.. if u just want something for 4 years or so .. toyota should be fine as well.

I have honda CRV. Everything is cool. But road noise is prominent. That's why I sometime wish I had bought RAV4. Road noise is not so much bad that would make the ride unpleasant, it is just when you compare with toyota that you take notice of the road noise.
