First day at his job, Vice Prez Jha sparks protests after swearing in Hindi
There were minor demonstrations across the country against the newly elected Vice President Parmananda Jha for taking oath of office and secrecy in Hindi language during the President and Vice-Presidential swearing in ceremony at Shital Niwas Wednesday.
Student organisations affiliated with different parties staged demonstrations in various parts of the capital Thursday against Vice President Jha taking the oath of office in a "foreign language". They demanded that VP Jha publicly apologise for this.
Similarly, locals of Gajuri in Dhading district barred vehicles from plying on the road by imposing transportation strike Thursday. They were apparently enraged by Vice President Jha taking oath in Hindi.
They also said that this was a matter of grave concern which has put at risk the sovereignty of the country. Likewise, Chure Bhawar Ekata Samaj, a party which claims to work for the people of hilly origin living in the Terai, also obstructed traffic for more than an hour in the East-West highway passing through Saptari district.
The transportation strike had caused a long traffic snarl in the highway, causing a great problem for passengers.
In Butwal also local youths chanted slogans against the newly elected VP and blocked traffic in the major roads and intersections. There were reports of protests in Makwanpur, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Dadelhura and Tahahun also.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, clad in the national custom, had taken the oath of office and secrecy in Nepali. However, when he administered the oath of office to his deputy Jha, who was clad in a dress many identify with Indian parliamentarians, the latter preferred to take it in Hindi, raising eyebrows among the high-level dignitaries and political leaders present there.
According to an independent statistics, only 0.05 percent of people living in Terai speak Hindi. The majority of the people there speak Bhojpuri, Maithali, Avadhi and other local dialects. However, Madhesi leaders prefer to mostly speak in Hindi during the parliamentary proceedings saying that it is a "lingua franca" in Terai. nepalnews.com July 24 08

That means in Terai everybody understands Hindi. So he speaks in Hindi so that everyone can understand. However, he wasn't speaking in Terai now, was he?

I just read this in the Telegraph Nepal. Nepal President was forced to wear daura suruwal: Upendra YadavTGWUpendra Yadav, the president of the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum talking to a local FM radio this morning July 25, 2008 has said that the spark of protests against Hon. Vice President Parmananda Jha for his taking oath of the office in Hindi Language is aimed at destabilizing the communal harmony of the country.“Hindi language is uniting the entire Madhesi community---who may have different mother tongues, such as Maithili, Bhojpuri, Awadi and othersâ€, Yadav said.“If making a speech in Hindi at the CA meetings or taking oath of the office in Hindi becomes communal then by the same token forcing a Madhesi to wear Daura Suruwal-the national attire and swearing in Nepali language is the product of the Communal mindsetâ€.“No where in Madhesh, people speak Nepali and wear the Pahadi dress the daura Suruwal, the Madhesi community rather prefers to wear Dhoti, Kurta and Gamcha- common attire of the Madhesi communityâ€, added Yadav.“The first president of the republic, His Excellency Ram Baran Yadav was forced to wear Daura Suruwal and swear in the Nepali language…the act has amply demonstrated the hegemonic attitude of some leadersâ€, he said adding, “it has not been taken in good taste by the entire Madhesi communityâ€.“It is strictly personal decision to speak in whatever language he or she wants thus the furor sparked against Honorable Jha holds no waterâ€, concluded yadav.http://www.telegraphnepal.com/ 2008-07-25 08:35:35

Its not like we don't have any official language in Nepal or any official dress. The president and the vp should be using official stuffs when in public. They are there to serve the public so they cannot do whatever they want to do, not even speak what language they choose to speak or wear what clothes they choose to wear. Some leaders seem to understand this whereas some unfortunately don't.

Then they both don't deserve to be President and VP. They are only representing only one small fraction population of Nepal. They are now representating all Nepalese not just one small fraction of Madeshi. Nepali language is our common language and we have our Nepali Dress. If these two idots fell shame to wear Nepali Dress and sworn in Nepali, think will they do anything for the country? They are on those posts to represent Nepal and Nepalese throughout the world that means not to promote India. If they want to be Indian, they must leave the post and go India. Before Nepalese drag them on the street and beat the hell out of them. Shame on those Indian Agents. We must get kick them out ASP.Nepal is not India. These traders must kick out ASP.

this is for jha bro,
well i did not complain about the costume u were wearing while taking the oath, but since the national language of the country u r vice president in..is nepal,u should give respect to the national language and should have taken the oath in nepali. well, just think a latin american becomes vice president of u.s and takes oath in spanish, that won't be accepted in u.s and any other country..dude, will u agree if a newar guy becomes vice president and take oath in newar language?
zee tana ani nepali janta sanga mafi manga budha...nepali ma mafi manga ni feri...mujhey maaf kar dijiye chahin nabhana..ani be good and do your job better, good luck budha.

Writ concerning VP Jha filed at SC
KATHMANDU, July 25 - A writ has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday demanding to disqualify the oath taken by Vice President Parmananda Jha claiming the act was against the constitution.
Advocate Bal Krishna Neupane filed the writ claiming that Vice President Jha swore against the legal provision in the interim constitution.
The writ demands that the previous oath be disqualified and the Vice President take the oath again.
Vice President Jha had taken the oath of office and secrecy before President Dr Ram Baran Yadav amidst a ceremony at the Presidential residence in Sital Niwas on Wednesday.
All clad in the Nepali attire President Dr Yadav had sworn in the Nepali language while the Vice President, who was dressed in what seemed like the Indian lawmakers’ dress code for the parliament, had translated the oath which was written in the Nepali language and had taken it in the Indian language.
The incident has sparked protests across the country.

I think there should be a written test b4 sending there nomination for president and prime minister..
A test to check the knowlegde about our country and culture...like wat is our national costume, language, bird, greetings, and all.
i dont want some other president and come n greet by sayin salalalkum...instead of namaste/namaskar (doestnt matter if pm or officail is muslim or hindu or christain)... or say jay hind or god bless instead of jai nepal...
Also they should learn the code of ethics and know what they stand for..not where they come from...

Geography should be the first basis for federal division of the country: Tripathi
Senior leader of Terai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Hridayesh Tripathi has said that the first basis to be considered while determining the federal structure of the country should be the geography.
In an interview with Nepalnews on 'federalism,' he said cultural and ethnic factors should also be considered after geographical area is fixed for a federal unit.
He said that there should be a consensus on geographical division of single Madhes province first after which political division of different provinces can be considered.
However, he reiterated his party's intention that they wanted a single Madhes both geographically and politically.
Tripathi said that there could be many sub-provinces under single Madhes or Terai province.
"Dividing a Madhes into different provinces will ultimately contribute to establish a reign of people of hilly region again," he argued.
Talking about sharing of rights between the center and the provinces, he said the center should have very limited role especially related to national security, foreign policy and monetary policy. nepalnews.com ps July 25 08
