our traditional jatra and feeling of newars are very much important. if there is no newars then there is no meaning of kathmandu and otherway the existence and value of nepal is under newars. what is the beauty of nepal? Mountain or culture? i don't think its the mountain. the beauty of nepal is culture that every tourist finds. i am so surprised that the government is trying to demoralize newars of kathmandu and stop fundiing for the national festivals. i was reading a statement by the finance minister
quote 'Let us not make the cultural and religious matters issues of contention," he said, adding that since Nepal is a secular country the government is committed to protecting the religiosity of all the communities.' unquote...
nepal was not a secular country it is made secular and one can not forget the past of nepal. Nepal was hindu country and forceably turned into the secular country. therefor, there would be no forgiveness if somebody hurts the feelings of community or the complete religious group. therefore i think people should respect the tradition and venerate others culture. In this momentum all the newars of kathmandu/lalitpur/bhaktapur should unite and fight againsgt any thing comes against newar culture and religion. Individual without culture and religion is not a human being.

"इन्द्रजात्राको अन्तिम दिन शुक्रबार पञ्चवलीको कार्य रोकिएपछि तनाव तीव्र बनेको थियो। "
I don't have problem with 'Jatras' but I think a state shouldn't fund any money to 'Bali'. Can't believe popole still wanna kill Ranga, Boka, Haas, Kukhura to make Durga happy !!!!!!!! Do we care what other people think about us? no wonder, Hinduism is shrinking....... Don't know when we wake up?? Still living in the 'Jangali' age.

Bisal, i think you talk first and think later. If you eat meat, why you complaining about it. If you don't believe in killing , you shouldn't eat meat. Oh.. i am sorry i forget.. we shouldn't kill in the name of god but we should kill in the name of bisal to make him roast beef sandwich. And by the way, i don't think Hinduism is shrinking but the guys like you will shrink and probably shrinking now. For me, honestly you seem like a dumb guy. Probably, you will be in jungle when you wake up one day. It seems like you don't have any culture and religion. You eat meat so, what the hell you taking Mr Non-veg. Shut up and don't make any commennts and don't try to be smart asssssssss. THINK FIRST AND TALK LATER THAT'S WHAT THE SMART PEOPLE DOES.

psycho - "Think on it and lastly NEPAL Doesnt mean NEWAR"" read this u psycho....from wikipedia
The word “Nepal” is believed by scholars to be derived from the word “Nepa:” which refers to the Newar Kingdom, the present day Kathmandu Valley. With Sanskritization, the Newar word Nepa became Nepal[3]. The Newars of present day Nepal, refer to all the inhabitants of Kathmandu valley and its peripheries (called "Nepa:") before the advent of Shah dynasty. The Nepal Sambat calendar, named after this Newar kingdom and devised 1100 years ago, is still one of the major calendars used in Nepal and testifies to its antiquity.

Government should NOT favor any group over other. Nobody has any issue with your jatra, you do it your sefl with your own money. Nobody has any problem with that. So Newars, please think from your head. If you get funding then other casts should get money from the goverment to celebrate their own festival. There is no end to it.

i agree with zenith that NEPA: is nepal not Newar and. the original nepal is district inside the valley. no one can imagine the word nepal easily after the invasion in the kathmandu valley. Late Kind prithvi narayan shah took the because after raiding NEPA: and if you really go with the logic NOn newars can not pronounce the word NEPA: properly so the king must have pronounced as nepal.
well mr. bisal123 since you are non veg so i don't there is any logic on you point on sacrifice of animal.

well, here is the thing, govt should not be biased to any race.. there are so many jatras held in ktm and not many people attend it other than some particular groups. i also agree that these jatras do entertain some tourist but if you all are talking about tourism then look closer, they are more interested in breath taking scenic views, overwhelming hiking trails, rafting and more. so, i think govt should be responsible to fund one or two major jatras to some extent to keep the historic culture alive and spend more on promoting other lucrative areas..

I don't know if someone brought up what I'm about to say but lets look
further into the future people. I think that these are the preliminary
steps that need to be taken for a well orchestrated plan to divide
Nepal. After all many nations have fallen into this trap including our
neighbor India, who suffered the practical application of the clever
British contrived plan of divide and conquer.
I remember studying religious tolerance in my 5th grade Social Studies
class, I also remembering how Nepal was called the garden of 36
subcasts. But has this garden turned into a gridiron where we (Nepali
not bahun, rai, limbu, newar, magar, tharu, madeshi, etc) are being
manipulated into clashing against each other for the racial
superiority? I would like to think the answer is yes. But is the price
worth it? If you ask me then I would have to say no because the
superiority of one would mean that the person who thinks s/he is
superior is de re disrespecting the quality of being Nepali by doing so.
Whenever it comes to such racial debates people aslo tend to bring up
questionable racial acts towards others. So in that respect don't you
think that germans should have a racial tension with the jews because
of the holocaust? Its hard to heal the cracks and wounds once they have
been created. It is even harder to heal when they have been open and
sore for thousands of years. Look at India and Pakistan. What has the
war brought to them. Still now they can't find common grounds and seal
the wounds that was created 50 years ago.

Anybody who knows communists should know that "religion is opium" as declared by their prophet karl marx. so if you are communists , you have to cheer up that the first step has been taken by bold maoists in their effort to stamp this 'bramhavakya' by trying to eradicate this jatra system a reminiscent of feudalistic influence of blind faith, discrepancy and what not.
Anybody who knows Baburam as Bahunram who declared war on Newari Jatra culture should understand that Baburam himself is a Newarko Jwainraja and Baburam's wife Hisila was elected by Kathmanduites as they so endearingly hailed her as a Newar Chelibeti, worthy to be a winner. We can believe that baburam must have consulted his Newarni wife before deciding to cut the Jatra budget . What's your take on this ? This so called budget cut on jatras should be taken as a kiind gesure from bhattarai 'jamairaja' who wants to wake up the kinsmen of his wife from the ages old anachronistic slumber of jatras and feasting. Hi guys , wake up , there is no more the king who would come to see your thotro ' bhoto' ! Baburam must be trying to give this type of message to his 'sasurali muluk'. Try to take this message instead of burning tyres and making your own city in ruins. So No fretting !
As for the ordinary people , having the continuation of these jatras or no-jatras in kathmandu, that will have least impact at all.

IF THE GOVT WANT TO GO AHEAD WITH THIS THEN IT SHOULD BE ACROSS THE BOARD NOT JUST NEWARS. IT WOULD INCLUDE SHIV RATRI, JANAI PURNII, DASAIN, TIHAR, TEEJ, ETC ETC NOT JUST INDRAJATRA. OOtherwise OUR NEWLY FOMRED GOVT. MIGHT ADD NEWARI PROBLEM ON TOP OF THE MADHESI ONE.

zenith2, Let us make this clear- you do NOT celebrate jastras just for the sake of tourism. When we use the word "tourism", the heart and soul of your tourist industry lies in mountaineering aka Mt. Everest. By your logic and stuburrness, Sherpas should get more funding than Newars since they live in the epicenter of Nepali tourism. Well they're not asking for funds, what makes you think you're better. Tourist in Kathmandu, if you're NOT blind, are $5 a day Isrelis, modern day hippies of the Europe/US. So the khaatey wondering around Freak Street looking for cheap hashish is NOT the money making aspect of your tourism. So please grown up and do not write things that does NOT make sense.

Apart from Mt. Everest, no one can deny that the cultural identity of Nepal has been represented by the Newari culture. If you refer to readings on Nepal, one can see that the newari culture and festivities gives a distinct characteristic to Nepal that in turn attracts an inquisitive traveler. I'm surprised that so many people here are spewing out negative comments on jatras and others ... if you have are from Kathmandu valley - be it Newar or any other ethnicity - you should very well know the cultural value of all these jatras. Why do we have this misgiving that cultural festivities are bad. This is what makes us unique from other countries of the world. If not for jatras, sanskar, diversity in language, food - why would we be any different from India or any other country for that matter. The jatras and other festivals like dashain/tihar and so on gives us Nepalis a way to entertain ourselves away from our daily chores. Imagine what would people do if there was no professional or college sports in the west .. they have no culture as such to come together and celebrate. Jatras provides us just that .. an activity where people can leave their stress behind, entertain themselves for some momentary pleasure. With no organized sports, what would people of Nepal do to entertain themselves?
