Im using Win XP in WIn 7 via virtualization.

To use that technology, you processor should be able to vistualize and have that function enabled in BIOS.

Hope that helps.

Have u added  Nas as the datastore in Vmware ESxi 4.0? Which  n/w file sharing technology u have used while doing so? have u tried running multiple nfs servers on NAS to concurrently access data for ESX?

We have been testing Vmware ESX with EMC san for our enterprize for a while now. Yes , your requirement doesn't seems to be clear. There is very thin line between SAN, NAS, ISCSI-SAN these days. So, got to be clear what exactly you wanna do and are also highly dependent on the line of product. So,  if you are a bit specific about your design and requirement,,may be i could help you.

Your question is not that clear. Are you new to the field and want to know what are the product and services that are available in the market or just want to test if you are the only person to know virtualization here at sajha. Your question is not clear as other members have mentioned.

If you want to know about my environment I am using vmware on my vista machine at home. I have debian, solaris, redhat, mac os x, windows 2008, ubuntu, suse and on the other hand I am using solaris sparc system using zones and containers. I am also using LDOM on sun sparc T series processor.

If you mention what you really looking for I think you will get solid answer here.

"Are you new to the field and want to know what are the product and services that are available in the market ?"

Yes I am..

I have a HP Blade Center(HP c7000 Blade Centerwith 16 bays each with 144 GB of storage space and Each bay has 8 GB of RAM..I Need to Create 20 Virtual Machines on Each bay with each having 20GB storage Space and 1 GB of RAM..Only Utilising the Bay's storage is not possible , so i am looking for Ways to accomodate 400-144 Gb in Either SAN or NAS..I have configured FreeNAS with 2 TB of storage Space and I am running 4 NFS servers on that NAS..I also know that Each bay has a Total 8 GB Of memory and total Memory of the Machines Combined cannot exceed 8 GB but i need 20*1 GB of Memory Per Blade..I am Looking for the Best Virtualisation technology to Accomodate my Needs..Any Suggestions from Expert?

I am doing some Webserver test on those machines..I am doing some basic Concurrent TCP connections Per Seconds, Packet Fragmentation Test ..I really need Stability while doing the test..I am not sure which Virtualisation test will be Good for Me..Also did some research and Most of the White Papers i read were Judging VM technologies in terms of Volume ..I.e How many Virtual machines that a Virtulsation Product can hold in that Storage device..

I did some research on the Products and came up with "Parallels, redhat with xen,MSFT 2008 SVR R2 WITH Hypervisor or Xen citrix or VMWARE ESXI 4.0".

Sorry for the Confusion , but i am not checking  to test if I am  the only person to know virtualization here at sajha..

Xen should handle this scenario. As per your requirement, it looks like 20 VMs will share memory from 8GB memory pool. If the processes (in Xen instances) are memory intensive, then its going to be a real problem. Adding 12G of memory should not cost that much these days.

I haven't tried booting off the NFS. But there is a work around in Xen. You might have to rebuild kernel.

btw, how many cores do you have on the base machine?

It's a Quadcore machine..M$Hacks buying memory is not a problem but i looking for Cost effective(My company is ready to buy MEM's if i need to but I just think there has to be Workaround) solutions..Are U talking abiut Redhat with XEN,XEN Citrix or XEN running on Fedora core 5(The most stable instance i have found)..Running 20 Virtual Machines(Each with 1 GB Memory) sharing 8 GB pool of Memory is Interesting proposition..Isn't it?

I have Successfully Booted VM's from NFS..Running Single instance of NFS on FreeNAS is not the best idea.as i found, to compensate for the Disk Read/Write from NAS With NAS running Dual Core ..

And i came across another Problem..Windows 2008 Svr R2 is basically a 64 Bit OS..Running W2K8 R2 as Guest OS in Redhat 5.2  Enterprise Edition doesn't work..For some reason ,the product Freezed mutiple times during the Product Installation..To Overcome that problem, i had to hack through the Config File and made RHEL 5.2 with XEN think that it's W2K8 without R2..And i was successfully able to install the Product....

When u try to install XEN on Redhat, yes u have to virtually rebuild the Kernel..Which i also successfully did...There couple of dependencies but it was not that hard..

The problem that i encountered XEN redhat is the way u you backup the Machine to a Different Machine and it's not that easy..I have gone Through VMWARE ESXi 4.0 and the backup Procedure is fairly straight forward...I have to make sure that i install VMWARE central sever on Any machines and Should have Upto date VMware tools and Export the VM Instance..There is One Virtual machine HD and the Conf file that i have to backup..

Any ideas from Experts is Highly Appreciated..Virtulisation is an Interesting technology and U people can learn and have good career in this field..And No VM Experts on Desktop..i am Strictly talking about the SVR environment...

Thanks

It was on Debian Etch. My guest OSes were *nix based, both 32 adn 64bit. I have run M$ XP on Parallels and VirtualBox but not the Win 2008.

Since you are booting off the NFS, you can use try backing up the NFS share. Why do you think backing up the VM is problem? or were you talking about cloning the VM??

**Personally, I would not run 20 guest OS on a machine with a quad core ; ).

My $0.2.

I was "talking about cloning the VM"..Few Minutes ago found the Solution too..

"**Personally, I would not run 20 guest OS on a machine with a quad core ; )."

I know it's not the best idea....

There has to be smthing that i am missing..I am looking for the Missing Link...

Prob U know it but VMWARE ESI 4.0 doesn't have a Vsphere client for Windows ..Prob u can get it from Sourceforge.net..Parallael has support for Linux,MAC and Windows....

But i still don't have a Freaking Clue Which Virtualisation Product will best fit my above mentioned Reqment

Thanks M$Hacks..Definitely u have some idea abt Virtualisation...

i believe if you go down to ESX-3.0/ESX-3.2/3.5 you will have everything you need.

unless you go for vanilla vmware server and client setup all of the VMWARE *** are tweaked version of standard release for optimal performance of EMC storages.

for example ESX 3.X series of releases are for the optimal performance of clariion series of their storage.

ESX 2.X series were for Symmetrix DMX.

i am not saying that ESX 3.X will not work with Symmetrix DMX.

what i believe can be done is to get the plain vanilla version of vmware server and client.
so basically when createting a new vm you can specify what you want.
--create    <vm name> <image name>
                       [--hostname <hostname>] [--size <size>]
                       [--ram <size>] [--cpus <count>]
                       [--netboot]

creating vm is not the big problem in your case but rather to map the vms to the cpu's and ram locations.

"I am Looking for the Best Virtualisation technology to Accomodate my Needs.."

VMware is the best and most mature with Vmotion, Vstorage, Vcenter, VM templates, etc.....
It all depends on your utilization of the VMs on each Blade, Vmotion will auto configure the optimal environment by moving the moving VMs to different blades.
Just testing Webservers doesn't tax the system, so I am not sure why how you established your requirements.
