What do you want then?

Seriously. The international standard for passport has changed and we are still using antiquated hand written passports. Unless we have any resource to accomplish it in nepal, i do not think you and i have any other options. So for the time being before we get our resources straight, India sounds like a viable option. It's ok to have anti-India sentiment for positive reason - it's good for competition but plain stupid to make a mockery of yourself.

How about planning to invest in passport printing business? Is that even possible?

N,
I am not sure if you are following this issue well.  The issue is not about if we want a Machine Retable Passport (MRP) or not.  The main issue is that the gov of Nepal gave the contract to Indian company without the bidding process.  Here is a quote from today's Nepal News:
"The government lent the contract to Indian company at USD 4 per piece though the earlier bidders had proposed to supply at as low as USD 2.99 per piece. The government ignored the direction given by the Public Account Committee (PAC) of the parliament which had asked the government to follow proper bidding process to lend contract."
To me this looks like a straight corruption and the cost will be transferred to you and me.  I'll have no problem if Indian company prints it in $2.99, I just don't want to pay extra money to feed our corroupt poltician.

Johnny,

ok. I see your point and i might not be well informed like you are. Thanks.

However, the point of publicizing India hate FB page is simply - Idiotic. I do not want to make myself sound advocating "Everything India" but that's what we got, should probably learn to live it.

Johny: In that case, the original poster should be creating a FB group against the corrupt tendering process within Nepali government. Leave India out of it.

I don’t know what the facebook group has and I really don’t care for it since I don’t have a facebook account, but before we show our arrogance here, for or against the topic, we need to understand what’s going on.

India CANNOT be left outside of this discussion, it’s not just a matter of corruption.

There was an open tender process for the MRP passports a few months back. The best bid was for 2.99 as previously stated. However Indian government, using Sujata maiya as the tool, pressured Nepali government to grant India the right to print Nepali passport for an inflated price of USD 4. Other than a clear profit, there might be something more at hand here. While Nepali PM states that our security is not threatened, doubts are rampant and reasonably so. Can India misuse the MRP? Will this increase India’s control over Nepali citizens? Who knows. While I do think there is more than profit at play here, I doubt security is severely threatened, aren’t we printing Nepali rupees overseas still? But whatever it is there is some foul play.

These are the reasons why MRPs should be printed in Nepal (and Sujata maiya should be ousted):

1.       Why go with an expensive bidder?

2.       Why go outside when we can do it inside?

3.       PAC recommended so.

4.       Supreme Court has temporarily halted the decision and will rule next week.

5.       PM already gave the wrong reasons why it should be printed outside: a) Political Pressure b) Diplomatic Ties

a)      Political pressure should not be a reason to conduct any kind of business in a country. If there is a political pressure would you sell Nepal?

b)      Diplomatic ties with a bully? India clearly knows that we can print it ourselves for a cheaper price and yet wants us to hand over the contract. Doesn’t it sound like a scene from the Godfather? How long do we cave in and try to pleas our big brother while he keeps on pushing us? Did we lose so many lives to see this day?

Blame it on the NEPALI politicians behind this....hate them for doing this....we had a choice not to deal with india and unfortunately we did. If passport can be printed in Nepal at a cheaper price then yes it should be done in house. What's with all the anti-India rhetoric in this thread as if indians are behind the conspiracy, that's just idiotic.

I don't think it is safe to give MRP to india.  India is our neighbour and these are sensitive issues. They might give passport to some indian intelligence or other people. It is much safer to give passport to some french company who bidded for it.

What was the time line given by the french Company?? Was it quicker, the Same or later than this Inidan Company? We have to take that into consideration too?  Has this French Company done this before or was this their forst attempt , what about this inodan company? Only Procing is not a factor here? we have to look all these other things too.. Any body can share any insight on this? then we are truly judge this deal....

French company?

Who are we kidding. The PM himself said that the reason they are going against PAC's advise is because of the political pressure and diplomacy with India.

Don't over analyze stuff buddy. And Cylegend, read my post in full before you separate India out of the mess.

where is the proof that indian govt was behind sujata maiya being pressured into this? Where is the backing that proves your accusation? unless otherwise proven your accusations are mere assumption anyone can come up with.

If I show you the proof are you going to give me money? If not then stop asking for stupid proofs. Do I have an obligation to furnish you the proofs? You should've first done your research before posting your blesthemies. Bekaar ko kich kich bhura bhuri haru.

Ofcourse it is an accusation, however derived from the past series of events. Let me present the things that would conclude her loyalty to hindustan:

1. Her closeness with Indian ambassador. Now, don't ask me proofs of this, just read papers.

2. She was adamant about India not encroaching on Nepal's boarder, this despite Nepali officials proved that was not the case.

3. Her dad's close tie with India and her close ties with her dad.

Now, with all those three above, if somebody comes and throws other bids away supporting the most expensive bid, do you need proof behind the motive? If you still do then go ask Sujata Maiya herself. Lagirachha....

I surely don't kid around, but what I don't understand is why are you guys playing the devils advocate on behalf of Sujata maiya. In the court of law, you are innocent until proven guilty; in the court of rumorville you are guilty until proven innocent. Specially, when facts like the one I presented above are stacked against you (c'mon 4 dollars vs 2.99 which one would you choose). I just can't fathom why the sudden love for Sujata.

You implicated my vengeance against koirala family; I don't recall making any statements agianst Koirala name. B.P. Koirala is my literary hero, I always had the respect for Girija babu even though I didn't agree with his stances most of the times (you have to credit him for bringing "Democracy" to Nepal, twice). Now, I see the facts that I had listed and my instinct tells me something is fishy, why should I give her the benefit of doubt, specially knowing her history.

But then again, I might be talking to wall who is adamant on proving me wrong. Fine, I give up, you guys were right, Sujata wanted them to be prnted in India just because she was conerned that they won't be printed in Nepal on time. Happy??

It is not solely our responsibility. I also agree that we eat Indian salts
and sugars. We almost consume every Indian products. I am not an anti India. But look at the other things,
whatever we get, we  always get them  at the expense of another thing. Look at Tanakpur
treaty. It was signed by GPK in 1991, where Nepal gave away about 3
hectares of land to India to which India had promised to provide us
access to Indian river
and also provide 10 millions units of free electricity. Nepal have already given away
the lands. But hast  India fulfilled their promised? "NOOO".
See
what happened in 2005 in Terai part of our country. Because India did
not open the river barrage, it caused flood in our Terai region that
displaced many people over there.
India has
asked our government to provide access to Mahakali river by building Sarada barrage to which they promised to give us an equivalent amount of Sal forest and pay us every year. But today nothing exists, Sal
forest has been already cut down and taken away by them, and we do not
receive any money. But India still uses our Mahakali river.

And also look at the encroachment issues.
There are total of 685 pillars of which 264 has been already destroyed. India has encroached about 60,
000 hectares which is equivalent to 12 time the size of Kathmandu. Our
leaders are more or less responsible for  that. But  it is also the Indian government
responsibility. If there is any wrong
doing we have done to India there are only very few things. This is not
only the case of MRP. I know it's no important talking of the past. But
we can prevent the future. We have not offended India in any others
ways. What have our country done to face such things from India. I am
not offending India in anyway. If India develops and prospers we will
the first nation to benefit from them. But it is our right to defend our nation at any cost.
