Guys,

Wanted to go down memory lane. The older guys on sajha must have good memories of when Nepal Television first came to Nepal. I remember that only one of my relatives had a TV at first. And it was such a big deal. At first there was only news and a few hours of television programming.

I was wondering what are the shows you remember?

My memories are of Rama Singh and Durgha nath Sharma telling the news. I still remember the tune when the news started.

The cartoon Barba-papa - this chewing gum looking character with his family...Barba-mama, barba-joe, barba-this and barba-that. Whole family could change shape on command. I think this was one of the first cartoons on NTV. Us kids were highly entertained. Clickety-click Barba click!

On Saturday afternoons, my friends and I would sit down to watch the afternoon show.

Remember Variety Variety -- it was like 'America's got talent.' It was like a circus with people with all kinds of talents.

And I remember foreign shows like--The Professionals (that was my favorite. My cousin and I used to run around with fake guns and pretend that we were the professionals.) Dempsey and Makepiece. The A team. Faulty towers.
Knight Rider...and that show with the super-motorcycle. I forget that name.

And then there were Nepali shows like...damn I don't remember but I remember the character played by Ramesh Budhathoki -- Deepak Thapa. In that character Ramesh Budhathoki used to do this thing with his forefinger that he would rub it under his nose. Wow, that really caught on in Kathmandu during that time. All the kids were doing that. The funny thing was that apparantly whenever any kid saw Budhathoki, they would do that to him and after a while it started to get annoying to him. LOL.

And I remember all the advertisements that used to be made in India. You could tell because they were Indian actors in the commercial but the words would be Nepali. Some of it would sound so odd. Like that Maggi commercial, "Mummy bhok lage chha." (as opposed to 'Mummy, bhok lagyo')

i remember this serial abt an extraterrestrial rock...this rock granted the owner various powers like making the teacher write all sorts of arbitrary number on the black board.

this show really captured my imagination at that time :)

But i dont remember much now. Anyone know what I'm talking about or was this just a dream?

I think the rock glowed green (duh..aliens)

No, but what you said reminded me of that freaky show on NTV: Dr WHO. Dude, that was a whacked up show. Some of that sh*t was scary :-) It was like an older versions of the X files.

Dekchi, are you talking about that serial with kids who find that rock? I had completely forgotten about it.

Other things I remember is Olympics game.
Surya Tobacco's Hami Hau Deshwasi Nepalko song for world cup.
Vidya dhanam Sarva dhanam pradhanam.
Gaile pani timilai lakhetne, kukurle pani...(GOGO)
Stops bad breath, fights tooth decay (Everest tooth paste where the lady dunks her basketball but still stays up top)

Oh right. And the endless Hajir-prachar (?) competitions from different schools. Remember those?
Where there were 3 kids and you could hear all of them whisper, whisper, whisper. And the one sitting in the middle would blurt out the answer. LOL.

And the annoying Children shows put on by these Nepali ladies where they would discourage any form of creativity by telling children that they should be studying instead of sending their stories, dramas, art, into the show.

NTV was fun. But you know, I think it changed the whole fabric of Kathmandu society. I remember my family used to sleep a lot earlier. Than television came. And then our evenings just revolved around NTV. I wonder how much Kathmandu changed because of television.

Getting Doordarshan during those days was a real problem. This was before the Dish Antennae days. So I remember I would send the servant unto the balcony upstairs to spin the 'stick' antennae on the roof, trying to point it towards India. I would yell, "Raame, daya daya...bho bho bho....heterika, signal gai halyo ni. Ghuma ta ghuma!" And the poor servant would be twisting and turning the antennae on top of the roof trying to get a good signal.  Ha ha ha. Goodtimes.

Good one Kiddo,

Oh and remember that Manisha Koirala sweater commercial. Her running down this hill, kicking up a whole bunch of leaves. Dude I don't even remember the product she was advertising. But Manisha was hot...the way she would run her hands upwards on the collar of her pull-over. Some commercial huh? I remember the model more than the product. LOL.

Yeah, I remember the Go-Go commercial. Chris Massan sang the tune for that.

Anyone remember this show Hetterika?
That was a really good one.

Basically this guy was actually a car driver for a family, pretends to be an airport pilot, just so that he can marry a girl of a 'good family.' And the family with the girl, borrows a Television to show off about how 'ahead' they are economically so that they can marry the 'airport pilot.' Damn that was freaking hillarious how that story unfolded. You've got to give a lot of these Nepali shows credit that they did a great job with very few resources.

I remember waiting form the program to start. I mean there used to be the rainbow screen with the countdown and music. Me and siblings used to watch the screen without blinking and then the shreemaan Gambhir used to come and we used to stand and salute. I remember a lot of the programs amd my eyes hurting because I would forget to blink. Then came the antenna  for Indian channels, almos tevery house had one, when the reception was bad some one had to climb up and change the direction whlie someone had to yell out if it worked or not . daya, hoina baya, bhayo bhyo

Gillete sports.

Oh and Nepal television had some of the most random shows ever. There was one show where they got an arrested drug addict to make all kinds of different concoctions of drugs on live television. And as if that wasn't enough, they had another dude make 'fake currency.' I'm still haunted by memories of that.

Oh and I remember regularly on the news seeing these endless tables of seized gold on the News with sheepish looking smugglers trying to duck the eye of the camera.

And then there were the endless cooking shows, flower decorations and all kinds of arts and crafts shows.

You've got to give Nir Shah credit for effort.

I dont have early memories of NTV because the transmission of NTV to our place was very late. So when I was kid in late 80s until almost mid 90s there was only doordarshan. Used to enjoy Mahabharat, ramayan, chitrahar, a lot also friday movie. After NTV's transmission was in our place people used to get 2 antennas 2 boosters to see the two channels and was funny. Because at times the signal was lost after some storm events and used to change the direction of antenna. I too remember going upstairs to change the direction of antenna and by the time ur in ur tv room the antenna used to get deflected by some wind. Used to be irritating at times. Haha, Those were the days, twakka tukka, aja bholi ka kura, yes gitanjali. I'm talking about Butwal.

"I love Podrej" and BMC masala "Maiti bata Layako??" still revolves around my head, and the annoying "Super Top Luga Dhulai ko sabun" .....ha ha      Sunday Pop then changed the whole thing for me.

"haasa katne khurkera, aayo jobaan hurkera...kaslai dyu yo jobaan?"...but I don't remember if this was radio Nepal or NTV. Wait, was this part of 15 ga-te?

Oh and that show--Roopmati based on the novel by Rudra Raj Pandey.

Also remember the endless Nepali pep-rallies. "Aba agaadi badhnu chha. Aja agaadi badhnu chha."

And when there were royalty birthdays, endless people sending in their salutations. Of course the news always started with the royalties.

And they had some comedies where if you sent in a joke, they would get actors to act out the joke for you.

There was some sort of kids art show. They would display all the arts that were sent in by little kids. I can't think of the name right now.

NTV would also show HINDI and NEPALI movies Saturdays starting at 2:00 p.m. I believe. English news with Sarita Gurung evernight at 10:00 p.m.

Gosh I left Nepal such a long time ago, I wish I could remember more................

Babal, Haasa katne haina, Ghaasa katne.

And that Hatterika, wasn't that the one where the guy claims to be a pilot and says, "new road ma break lagako" or something like that.

English news with Bandana Rana, Nepali with Durga Nath Sharma (he later became GM of NTV).
How about that podrej ad, "Aa Black n whine TV"

Begining from "sri man ghambira"... then "krisi karya kram", "prahari karya kram"..... till the closing "sri man ghambira".. i used to watch - only when I was in mama ghar. That is, tv was only in my mama ghar :)

few flashes-

Songs: * angalo angalo ma.. snasar bandera .. (by bhim tuladhar .. i guess.. he used to have round black gandhi glasses).
            * sagar jhai gahiro..  .. sunil with long overcoat standing on rocks..

Program: i remember "krisi karya kram" .. apples from karnali, flashing on black and white tv ..

Advertisement: * aja timi chaar mahina ko bhayeu.. (horlicks)
                          * go go washing power - khura le pani timilai nai lakhetchha..
                          * raju timro daant ta... (rato danta manjan..)

Oh, yeah, .. there used to be a transparent plastic cover on the tv screen.. that cover used to be of half red and half gren color..

And, we used to position the direction of antenna rotating the bamboo pole, to get good signal from door darsan .. for ramayan.. remeber that usual scenario ? - "aayoo??" "aako chaina".... "aayoo??" "aako chaina".... "aayoo??" "aako chaina".... while positioning the antenna ? ;)

Ek Ek Bhot Ko Mahatwa Huncha, Ekai Bhot Le Jitaucha Haraucha - a commerical during election, encouraging people to vote, I even remember the tune till this day.

There were tons of great commerical about getting girls educated. I don't remember exactly how it is but it goes something like this : The story takes place at some village.  A youn girl goes with her Grandfather to talk to this rich farmer, his accoutant say they owe money but gives them wrong amount while the little girl is in the back doing the math. She says the amount is wrong and says they need to calculate again, when they do she was proven right. She looks at her grandfather and smiles. For some reason this commerical stuck out and I still remember.

@Rekha,

I know exactly the commercial you are talking about. I remember it quite vividly also.

@Kiddo,
Damn, you mean to say that I've been singing the wrong song all these years? Shame on me!

Heterika--breaking down in New Road. And then he corrects himself--New Road hoina...New York, New York! Dude, that was classic. Hah ha. I remember laughing my *ss off.

@Sajhababa,
That's right the Hajir Jawaf competitions. I always wondered what guys who participated had to go through? Did you guys have to memorize a whole book?
Did they actually tell you that only one person could say the answer? I remember all this whispering and the endless conspiratorial writing, scratching. And then the person in the middle would crane their necks out and blurt the answer. And then the shrill bell if the time was finished.
Oh and these elaborate packaged gifts if you won. Sajhababa, did you actually win? What was in those packages...tell us..tell us...

*Songs I remember are Tara Devi.
And this super talented kid from Chhabahel (Bhrikuti school, I believe) who wanted to become Narayan Gopal when he grew up. Man, that kid could sing his heart out. Very talented.
