total miles to school = 6 miles
his bike speed = 6/.5 = 12
time taken to go to minnies house = 5 /12
total time taken = 3/4
time taken to go to school = 3/4 - 5/12
= 4/12 = 1/3
but speed = distance / time = 1/(1/3) = 3
So he was walking 3 miles per hour.

The first assumption you made is wrong!!
Total mile to school is 5 miles+X.
Or am I getting it wrong? Remaining mile = 1 mile or X (unknown)mile?

Stiffler,
it doesn't say "the remaining miles"
it says "the remaining mile" which means there is only 1 mile remaining.
use your grammar, "the" means "specific" mile that is remaining.

comingsoon,
distance to minnies house = 5 miles they walked "the remaining mile"
Look close, it doesn't say "the remaining distance" or "the remaining miles" it says "the remaining MILE" which means there is only one mile left to walk.
so total distance = 5 miles + 1 mile(the remaining mile) = 6 miles
If you are wondering how the total time is 3/4 hours, 3/4 hours = 45 mins
If you are wondering how the speed of the bike is 12, its because it takes him half an hour to travel 6 miles, 6/(1/2) is 12
If you are wondering how time taken to go to minnies house is 5/12, its because
time = distance to minnies house/speed of bike= 5/12
I hope you are not wondering anything else.
Cheers

The remaining mile = 1 mile . I don't know much English but what i believe is ,
ram ate 3 cookies and you ate the remaining cookie.
so there was 4 cookies .. I believe like this as dynamite has described

That's why I am confused like many others. I first wrote you off, but then saw 'MILE' also hence I was asking if I was wrong.
But nyshangal has a point, MILE doesn't always mean 1 mile, it could be mean 1/2 mile too, but the word remaining certainly points it toward being 1 mile.
Anways, I am not sure if the distance from Minney's house to home is not given then we might have too many variables to solve the problem so I will go with 1 mile.

Stiffler, if it was less than a mile, then it would say, the remaining distance.
You cannot say "the mile" if it is not a complete mile.
you cannot say "the 2 miles" if it is not exactly 2 miles, its simple.
Hope it helps.

Comingsoon makes sense (the placement of "the"). Very badly worded problem, sounds more like grammer problem than maths.

बुझ्नेलाई श्रिखन्ड नबुझ्नेलाई खुर्पाको बिँड् भनेको एही हो। you don't understand the English language and blame the grammar on that. Dynamite is right. When it says the remaining mile, it means the remaining one mile. because mile is singular there is no need to say one mile after saying the remaining. If it had said the remaining miles, then you don't know how many miles...... For those who are concerned about the remaining half mile, it would have been written the remaining half mile if the question was meant to refer the half mile.
