 Hi All,

I need some sugegstions about PR of Canada. I am done Masters in Computer Science from US and working as a Full time in USA. I  have got  pretty good English in Reading and Writing. I  have got experience of  3 yrs experience as well. I am interested to apply for PR in Canada being in USA.

I talk with some Attorney in Canada and some immigration firm, I got reply from 2 of them only. They are saying that I am eligible for PR of Quebec Skilled workers but I have to learn French in 8 months to be prepared for an interview . They are ready for processing my Case but Asking for $3000 as their charge and they are not able to garantee whether I will be selected or not.

I have gone through the requirements it seems like I am eligible but  I miss some information like About Quebec for which the Attorney has promised me to help me with this.

I am ready to learn french but I am still in delima that I am eligible or not eventhough they have told me that I am eligible for it .

May I have suggestion regarding it.

Thanks,
Sambhabi

Try contacting canadavisa.com. I liked them because they are always quick in answering your queries. I have also forwarded my application for quebec immigration with them.

Its good to find people who have done some research before blindly  posting on sajha.

below are my suggestion:
  • You can always correspond to the lawyer and get more info. However, Its better if you apply by yourself. (why to pay the third party). You got your MS degree and you know how to get things done. Even canadian government encourages people to apply on their own. Please visit their official site for more details For ex: http://www.cic.gc.ca/
  • I know its time consuming and boring to go through the documents and instruction mentioned in the website. However, its worth to do that. Even if you are going through the lawyers, I know you have to go through the same hassle. Hence I strongly advice you to apply by yourself.
  • Make sure how much points do you accumulate. ( i suppose its 67 or w/e). If you are married then I bet you dont have to worry about the points provided your education and career achievements. If you are single then its time to think to get married and secure your application. Just a safe advise.  Good for both of you :)
  • If you can, get advice from someone who is already there in Canada. Your post to sajha itself is indeed a good step from you.

I have just applied to Quebec through attorney. I have been told I need upper begineers level in French which I believe I have.  I still have 7-8 months to interview. Hope i can improve my french by then.  My application will be from Paris. Good luck with your application.

Well I applied through canadavisa. They said it will cost around  3000 canadian dollars.  But it wil be paid in parts at different phase of application.

I actually didn't know that I am qualified to Quebec  province. I  am not eligible to apply to other provice because I don't score required points. Quebec has a different rule though.

I m working on my french through some training classes. For the quebec program u may be or may not called for interview depending on ur documents u submitted. The best idea is to get ready for interview.

For Provincial Nomination Program of Quebec, learning french is just a formality which you can do watching youtube videos and CDs and DVDs you get from Best Buy of Staples. One of my friends did the same thing some time back who says it worths buying those CDs and DVDs for beginners. He is doing better than what he was doing in US.

I have been to Canada couple of times, people seem contented with life and did not find anyone running for no reason as we do find in NY specially Jackson Heights Nepalese. Driving is not as fast as we do in US :). I am also on the verge of moving there permanently in a month or so.

Regarding coming to US, it is no big deal. You can do back and forth anytime but you need to have US visa until you become citizen. You can get citizenship in 3 years. Citizens can go to US, apply for job also without much hassles, no need to worry about H1b or other visa issues. If you lose your job, go back to Canada and again re-enter US start looking for job and continue, however you need to notify the Canadian Border Protection before starting the new job in US.

Payroll tax is pretty much similar to US taxation. Instead of sales tax, you will pay GST / HST which sometimes sucks. Electronics are little bit expensive than US. I-phone costs $60 per month (if you go with Virgin service), including unlimited incoming, unlimited outgoing within Canada, unlimited data and unlimited texting to USA.  Highways are similar. Vancouver is better than any best cities of US. New Cities like Calgary, Edmonton are way better than any cities in US in terms of public transportation. You will see trams, high end light rails.

Digg into google if you want to know more cool things about Canada.

how long does one have to stay in canada to maintain the PR of canada. In US, i think you cannot stay more than six months out of country. I think they might have some of these laws where you have to maintain?

You need to be in Canada for 3 years out of 5 years to maintain your PR status, conditions apply.

If you cross more than 3 years and go back to Canada, you cannot renew your PR. you need to apply for Citizenship directly so technically speaking you can remain out of Canada upto a day less than 5 years, still conditions apply, you need to go through immigration lawyers to sort it out.

Believe it or not, Canada is GOOD. You get life here which you will always miss in US.

 Few more things to note

1) The "Quality of Life index" (by the United Nations) puts Canada as one of the three best countries in the world to live in - USA is number 24 on the same scale.
2) Canada has no handguns and a far lower crime rate, among the lowest in the world.
3) Canada has a totally free and universal health care system (NO CHARGES, no bills - ever) which makes Canadians to the second longest living nation on Earth, only surpassed by Japan. Canadians live on average 2.5 years longer than Americans.
4) Canada's poverty rate (using the same statistical data) is approximately 1/2 of USA's at 9 % vs 17 % in the US.
5) Canada exports oil to the USA
6) Canada does not have quite the same disparity between the very rich, and the very poor seen in the USA.

Other notable things you come accross in your daily life
1) Unlimited internet per month costs about 35-40 bucks, comes with triple play plan also 99 including all 3.
2) Gas price is about $1.06 per litre.
3) Many toll free highways
4) Easy government loan for education.
5) Many stars like Avril Lavigne, Justin Beiber, Hitman (WWE star), Celine Dion, Jim Carrey are from Canada.
6) Less obesity in people
7) Less illegal immigrants
8) You will find best buy, walmart, costco, toy r us, staples, target everything.
9) You can drive with US vehicle license (no need to take any exams)
10) You will start leaving your drinking habit, liquor is expensive, for 12 packs of corona you will pay about 22 bucks.

More things to share but I don't have it right on my head now

Having two master's degree here in US i did applied for the PR in Canada under skilled worker. It took me two year to get it coz they called me for interview and I'm going there in Dec.
I personally recommend u to apply yourself if u have lil time to research and go through some forums most of them r pretty helpful for different categories.
As the friend here said earlier, Canada is definitely other option for US as it almost have the same system in many respect and some better in other like free health care n better education and upbringing environment for the kids.

Best of luck Sambhabi
