Not sure how many of you are in my shoe, but I am dead bored with corporate IT job, loosing complete interest on it, and not sure what I want to do next? Has anyone faced same situation, what u guys did?

Now I think I know, why so many Indians own gas station, looks like they all retired from IT.

Been working at this start-up company for about 6 months now, I am a new-bee in the IT sector. The company initially hired me to write stories to develop Android app, but due to financial or some unknown issues the project never took off. The company laid off the graphic designer working on Android designs and they switched me to iOS and Web projects. It was a sweet ride for the first few months as I was getting used to work, learning the in-outs of the job (workload was never too much, contrary to my expectation). 

@neples, I am on similar condition. My manager works at a different location up north and he is a very busy person. He is saying that he is going to train us for some project but never gets time to arrange that. and It's been few months that I got no projects to work on, just small stuffs here and there... it is getting really boring just sitting and surfing net.

I have one question to you all IT veterans, as I am a newbie too, working in IT or software, can you get rich or is it just like one of those sarkari jagir in nepal, just for bread and butter.

That is why lots of indian returned to india.

I am in the same boat.Working in IT since 2008.Started with college job as GA where I was helping my supervisor to maintain/upgrading college website/portal,help professors with issues related to Blackboard,maintain/upgrade lab,tutor programming language etc.Since I graduated, I have been working in corporate IT sector and its kind of bored working on same application/technology/programming/domain.Beginning of this year me and my friend(White) had thought of starting software start up but it is on hold due to my PERM audit.I hope pretty soon I'll have my own company and will get to work on cool stuffs which I have though of :).

@ jstallon Yes - effing 17 years. To stay afloat and enjoy your work you have to change the domain. Move to a different business area so that you learn about the industry as well as technology used. In my 17 years in IT I have worked for total of 5 companies. Eight years with current. As I am now 40+++++ I can't move around as much; but I move within the same company in different business units. All the senior people talk too much. Specially Americans - Bolerai Khayeko huncha. Don't feel bad.

@kalidasbhai - Same here man. Concentration is a problem for me as well.


Having said all of the I still like my job. For me It is better than 11:00 pm to 7:00 am Front desk at Motel, Convenience Store, Security Guard on Campus; where I have worked in past.

Been in IT for 5 yrs now.... but cannot say I am bored .... but doing same stuff every single day kinda irritates sometimes.... i worked as a contractor for 4 yrs so may be thats why i'm not so bored.... may be change of environment, new challenges, new development, politics to avoid office politics helped me stay out of boredom ..... May be after some more years I will reach the pinnacle of boredom like some of us here ..... but hey till then no complains.....

I would suggest to get from one domain to another . To go from IT to IT development or business side and implementation

looks like u might want some swing in ur life. Start playing texas holdem poker, its a skill game u might be a millionaire or bankrupt that might be the ups and downs what u are searching for.
Buy the way i am trying this new hobby of mine if you dont believe me try wtching Rounders.

Have been working for 3+ years now, Not exactly IT field but quite similar..It looks like we all get bored after 3 years and most people move to different job. There's no other way around for us except move to new company after 3 years and it becomes little bit interesting for some time then the repeat of the same thing again.

I really want to do something on my own now. Some kind of business, but not sure what.. Another thing i have found is it doesn't matter what you're making 80k or 100k we all get bored to death with these jobs... but we have no other choice..
well it's been 3+ years, so i'am ready to explore another opportunity. I come home and start looking indeed.com these days...

Dimagkharab130, I couldn't agree more. It's not about the money. It's always about work we do. Sometime I feel like I should be doing some physical jobs which requires actual muscles instead of brain. Sometime I feel like I should be doing something which actually helps people directly.

All that matters in life is how you feel happy. But sometime its hard to completely forget what you have and look for something that you donot even know how its going to be. But again taking chances is all we have. Something like lottery.

I feel the same way. I am in my early 30's and in IT filed for past 3 years. Yesari family bata tada bhayera kati barsa samma USA ma basnne? next 5 years, 10 years, 20 years OR till death?

It's amazing to see nepalese IT professionals in this thread and feeling the same way as I do. I think we are entering into mid life crisis. Currently even if I am earning six figure salary, house, cars, family etc..I always find some emptiness inside me. It's not that I didn't struggle here in US. I struggled like most nepalese(you know ghan_ta hanne LOL) do but after achieving everything I am asking myself "What Next?" 7 figure salary then "What Next?"
Sometime these questions just make you depressed. May be I am missing Nepal. May be because I am not struggling like most of the nepalese like struggle for food, electricity & even water.

I am sure everyone here in US (specially in IT field) will hit the ceiling then will ask the same question "WHAT NEXT?"

Interesting thread. I guess I was in the same boat 4.5 months back. I lived in the US for nearly 18 yrs. I went to US when I was 20 yrs old. Got my Bachelors degree and Masters degree in IT. Worked for fortune 500 companies in San Francisco, Los Angeles and five different Federal Govt. agencies in Washington DC and Maryland area. Got married, bought a brand new house, my wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter, bought a brand new Range Rover, BMW and Acura. Spent money like crazy partyin, buying branded stuff and living the materialistic American life. Both myself and my wife made 6 digits and life was all good. But then I also used to wonder during work at times, what the hell am I doing? Am I going to do this until I am 60? Work became monotonous and boring as hell. It became too easy for me and I got bored doing the same things all the time. I changed to diff IT roles but then after 4-5 months, things got repetitive. I started thinking long and hard each day and started discussing with my wife to move back.

My wife supported the idea and after 8-9 months of careful planning, off we went to Nepal. My parents are super happy and so is my wife and daughter. My daughter goes to one of the best schools in Ktm, 5 mins from my house. My work is 20 mins drive but then I have a driver. The stress of driving to work 45 mins-1 hr each way; buying groceries; doing laundry; cleaning dishes; vacuum the house; mowing the lawn; snow shovel; paying N number of bills; paying 33% income tax; property tax etc etc. Sometimes I used to get discouraged looking at my pay-check. Damn those taxes .. :)

I guess in the end, everything is relative. For me, my family is the most important thing in my life and I am willing to sacrifice anything for them. Being the only son in my family, I am happy to spend quality time with my parents, my wife and my daughter. My parents love being around their only grandchild. I have absolutely no regrets moving back to Nepal. The only thing that bothers me from time to time, is the dust and pollution in the city. Besides that, I am loving it out here. Although sometimes, I miss MacDonald's and ooh .. driving my bimmer @ 90-100 mph. Never got a speeding ticket .. lucky me .. :)

Wherever you are, I hope you find your own happiness. Life is too short. Do your own thing. Don't listen to no one but your inner self. Peace!

Dead Bored with Corporate IT Jobs?
These are the things that i normally do, for not getting bored.
1. Get along with your Team members.
2. Hangout with your colleague outside work as well (Soccer, Hiking, Bar hoping, pot lock etc)
3. Go for a drink after Work sometime.(In fact make it a routine,every other Friday)
4. Join the same fantasy football league. :)
5. If you have family, invite your colleague to dinner.
6. If you are single, ask them to invite you to dinner (Lajh pachayera :) )
7. Play some silly pranks with your Colleague. (Within company rules)
8. Try to adopt the American way of doing things (Indian para haina... i hope you guys understand what i am talking about [No offence to anyone])

Well, these are the few things that is most essential for not getting bored at Work.

Regarding, doing the same thing at work everyday:
1.Try getting involved in smaller (short length) projects within the organization.
2. Fell free and talk with your Project Manager (just say you are getting bored doing the same thing everyday) they will find some solution. Don't worry kaam bata fire gardaina :)

3. Checkout the possibilities of switching to different project within the organization.
4. Learn new technology, so that you can switch to different project.

You guys scaring me...

"khushi" and "sukhi" are two different things. we are "sukhi" in US but not "kushi". If we were born, raised here then this would be our home. "Home is where heart is" and our heart is always in Nepal among firends, relatives and the things that we grew up with.

Also, in this context "Maslow's hierarchy of needs" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs

is playing out. we have the basics covered but we want recognition and self actualization. During those "ocean city days" and gas station days, we were worried about covering our basic needs and we were young and naive. As we checked the boxes off the list, family and other things start to matter. Probably we all were 19-25 when we entered this country with no intention to return back but as time changes, priorities change too. Maybe this generation that has money and experience can go back to Nepal and help build the nation like Indians have done.

My advice to all, be in the place that makes you happy and do the work that makes you content. Money can buy comfortable bed, not sleep!
