To not condemn current atrocities by the state just because similar bahavior was displayed by the state in the past is as lame as any excuse can get. Bad things bad things, no matter when they happen. When Maoists throw people out of their homes, it has to be denounced no matter when they do it. When an armyman rapes a girl, it has to be denounced no matter when he does it. Likewise, if the police uses force more than what is required, it has to be denounced, be it during Panchayat, during multi-party era or during the current neo-Panchayat.

To say that what the security officials are doing now is ok just because they have been doing it in the past is like BRB defending the murder of IGP (?) Shrestha by asking why Krishna Sen was killed in the jail.

My dear monarchists -- and by saying this I don't mean to level any non-monarchist a monarchist -- should stop pointing fingers at the political parties because your king has done more damage to the media and peace of the country in the last five months alone than political parties did in the last 12 years!

About protestors knowing what was coming, well, what would you do if your mouth was muted, people in power never listened to you and street protests were the only options left. In a way, street protests are the only options left now. If Kathmandu is closed for a week so be it, if that brings peace to the nation for even a month! People don't go to the street for fun. It's as simple as that.

If you happen to notice, it is called Chhakkajam by chhakkas on the streets. They do not let you go about your normal business. I agree with you that closing down nepal and hampering public normal life is not good way t o protest. But the above picture shows more than ruthlessness of the cops. It shows the power they have now in hand, if you remember during previous protests women police were used to handle women protestor. But now male dhendes (I dont think they deserve the label of police) are trying to beat a woman who can do no harm to them.

In bigger picture it shows Gyanendra's regime will take full autocratic path now and they do not care about any human right organization or journalist. The band of criminals now think they are above any law filled with criminals with loaded gun...

I guess political parties and supporter of democracy should think of coming up with better way to protest this autocracy... without disturbing normal public life. I guess this will help them in gaining more support than losing it...
