Where is ANA? Is ANA dead? Are you there ANA? Or ANA just a institute that only focus on "flesh" "cash" "Neprican" what does ANA says about the issue of India encroaching Nepal's land? Have ANA ever spoken against it? Why not? Doesn't ANA reflect American Nepalese Association? Does ANA have a backbone when it really comes to representing what is Nepal? ANA "Global Day of Action Against Indian Aggression in Nepal" i am with you! Folks let us request ANA to represent all Nepalese to fight India encroachment of Nepal's land. what do you suggest? jpeg

"The purpose of the exclusively educational and charitable Association of Nepalis in the Americas is to promote preservation of Nepali identity and culture in the Americas, to foster cordial relations among Nepalis and Americans, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the participation of Nepali-Americans in the communities they live in." - from ana site.

grgDai, thats about mission statement of every other nepalese society in the US but i haven't seen any activity from them regarding this issue. not that i am a licensed scout. but why are we pointing fingers at ANA only. why do we have such a bar set just for ANA. why are we not calling out all the nepalese orgs in the US. why can't we address this issue locally first and then file a petition at a higher level stepwise.

Eastsidaz, Who is pointing fingers to ANA only? We are pointing fingers to all the organization who claim to represent Nepalese anywhere. In US, everyone is throwing the name of ANA on the table because apparently ANA turns out to be the organization known by most people in the forum. What is your suggestion of addressing the issue Locally? What is Local? please enlighten us and if you know any local means...please lead us to the LOCAL means. There is no need for an escalation hierarchy, go ahead and let your voices out anywhere and anyway you can. Besides, why are you so defensive about ANA? You are making yourself sound like someone getting a cut from the worthless Fashion Show tickets on yearly conventions. I am not a member but i have donated money for ANA for its mission statement on behalf of myself and other Nepalese. There is no need to organize the issue. Lets do what we all can until the organized protest is there. Sid

Sid, I read all the responses in this thread and i dont see any mention of orgs other than ANA, hence my grudge. by local bodies i mean orgs like GBNC. why dont we local ppl ask the GBNC president to be vocal about this issue. he in turn would call on the regional bodies which would then call on the ANA ppl. why dont we follow a systematic approach which just underscores our gravity towards the issue. i am kinda sure that most of the US cities have proper representation by now. if your community doesn't have a sound representation, then u should initiate one. btw i am not just defensive of ANA, i am defensive of pretty much every nepali org which is trying to serve the community. at least they are devoting some time towards community service. trust me. community service is not an easy job.we got hustlers, hecklers and whiners in our community. and they far outnumber the good ppl who are trying to do something. i try to defend any good work or an attempt to do so because i still believe. i haven't lost faith in my country ppl. personally, i was a bit peeved by your use of the term "useless fashion show" and its linkage to me. i was a part of it as a viewer only. n i dont think they made a lump sum from the fashion show. at $20 per head. 250 attendees would contribute to only $5000. n lets look at the overheads: security - $500; lights n sound - $2500; hall: $1500; expenses during rehearsal - $1000. my total comes out to be -$500. well this is not an official report however i have tried to cite it to the best of my knowledge. by calling this show useless, we are trashing the effort of 40+ volunteers who were present during the event. by calling ANA useless, we are insulting the effort of 200+ volunteers who make this event possible. what is wrong with appreciating the attempt of these ppl. when will we learn to appreciate the endeavor made by these ppl. when we gonna stop Bitching.ANA is trying to reach all the age groups by organizing fashion shows, concerts, dj nite, forums, reunions etc under one roof . we should not engage ourselves in one dimensional thinking by saying that fashion show is wrong, concert is useless. they do serve interest thats not necessarily worthless. i think there is a time for everything. and it is just that. i had fun last year. i am attending this year too. i hope it will be better. but its me. i would not want to coerce anyone to attend ANA.

Your thought about going local and then thru local orgs to ANA doesn't make any sense here. GBNC is not related to ANA they are separate organizations. Are you saying that ANA should wait till all 500 plus nepalese organizations tell them oh it's time to make a statement? ANA needs to stand out at times like these and try to make a difference where they can otherwise they end up being just party organizer and nothing else. There are hundreds of other organizations that can organize parties but there's only one ANA that can make our voices heard by representing us and making a statement when it's needed like right now. We are not trying to nickel and dime right now. ANA has to show their stance as far as the Indian encroachment because only international pressure is going to resolve this and ANA is set right in DC from where they can make all the difference if they choose to instead of sitting duck. Hey ANA guys I know you are reading this. If you don't act now it just shows you're all a bunch of sissies.

Eastsidaz, My apologies for not understanding the full financial model of "Fashion Show". Lets agree that the fashion shows do not reap profits. I still do not agree the concept of showing Nepalese Fashion by putting bunch of Lil Kim wannabes Hoochies and 50 Cents wannabes thugs on the stage in the Name of Nepalese culture. Regardless, people are not expecting ANA do hold a rally in DC, Nepalese are just asking ANA to let other Nepalese know where exactly they stand on this issue and write a formal request to the representatives here if they are any concerned at all. Sid

Two ANAs in California within the last three years? Geez! The peeps who traveled all the way to LA from San Francisco and spent thousands of bucks two years ago, might be kicking themselves upon the unexpected news of them being the host for '09. Don't you think ANA should be held in rotating fashion based on US regions like North-East, Mid-West, West, South and once in a while in Eastern Canada, Western Canada or in Calgary region of Canada? This should not be too hard to accomplish as there are local Nepali association in all of the above-mentioned areas. Doing this could touch more Nepalese lives and "promote Nepali Culture" farther and wider. Something to think about!

grgDai, I am aware that GBNC and ANA are separate entities but we can definitely find a common ground between its goals. while gbnc works at a local level ANA works at a national level. n its not fair to assume that ANA doesn't have a say on this issue. they might be working on it. what we should demand from ANA is a solid action, not just some press release. To take such action, they will need support from local bodies which i call the ground level support. for instance, if gbnc president calls on ANA ppl expressing his concern about this issue and a few other local heads follow suit, ANA team will have a nationwide support and an urgency to act upon it. i know they are working on several NRN issues which are extremely creditworthy. if they have already started working on this issue, the ground level support will just bolster their case. my point is we ppl should work in tandem with ANA ppl. not just ask. but give as well. ANA ppl are not supernaturals. they are just like us. with a job. they have personal problems too. most of them have families too. sid, no offense taken bro. but instead of denouncing fashion show organizers choice of attire, you should have given them suggestions like what you would like to see in their future shows. it was their first time so its not fair to ask them to be immaculate. give them the credit they deserve. of course it was not their best. at least they tried. of course there are room for improvements. let them know about it. lets get into the habit of constructive criticism. thats how we will prevail. lets not dampen the spirits of ppl who are just trying to capitalize on what they've got.

Eastsidaz, Your points well taken. I have emailed ANA long ago on the previous fashion show ( hope it was constructive). I had taken an American friend to the show and he pointed out how those thugs represented Nepalese culture. It was a moment of embarrassment. I did not know what to tell him except uttering the word "idiots". My issue is don't fool the crowd. If you want to show thugs and hoochies call it that show and sell the tickets with that name and if you want to show true Nepalese culture, please show things that reflects Nepalese Culture. I would have to disagree with you on giving them a credit for the first show, any cultural association should have a common sense of showing their own culture and not someone's. ANA conventions has been more and more a SHOW OFF show than a cultural show. Sid
