Guys, Wanted to go down memory lane. The older guys on sajha must have good memories of when Nepal Television first came to Nepal. I remember that only one of my relatives had a TV at first. And it was such a big deal. At first there was only news and a few hours of television programming. I was wondering what are the shows you remember? My memories are of Rama Singh and Durgha nath Sharma telling the news. I still remember the tune when the news started.
The cartoon Barba-papa - this chewing gum looking character with his family...Barba-mama, barba-joe, barba-this and barba-that. Whole family could change shape on command. I think this was one of the first cartoons on NTV. Us kids were highly entertained. Clickety-click Barba click! On Saturday afternoons, my friends and I would sit down to watch the afternoon show. Remember Variety Variety -- it was like 'America's got talent.' It was like a circus with people with all kinds of talents. And I remember foreign shows like--The Professionals (that was my favorite. My cousin and I used to run around with fake guns and pretend that we were the professionals.) Dempsey and Makepiece. The A team. Faulty towers. Knight Rider...and that show with the super-motorcycle. I forget that name. And then there were Nepali shows like...damn I don't remember but I remember the character played by Ramesh Budhathoki -- Deepak Thapa. In that character Ramesh Budhathoki used to do this thing with his forefinger that he would rub it under his nose. Wow, that really caught on in Kathmandu during that time. All the kids were doing that. The funny thing was that apparantly whenever any kid saw Budhathoki, they would do that to him and after a while it started to get annoying to him. LOL. And I remember all the advertisements that used to be made in India. You could tell because they were Indian actors in the commercial but the words would be Nepali. Some of it would sound so odd. Like that Maggi commercial, "Mummy bhok lage chha." (as opposed to 'Mummy, bhok lagyo')

Do any one of you remember a nepali sci-fi telefilm? Some UFO lands on Kathmandu and creates chaos. People gets annoyed with all sorts of things going around them like they could not even turn off any of their appliances. It was like some sort of energy was powering every devices. One guy even broke his radio and even broken pieces out of it kept on producing annoying music. The show was hilarious and crappy..but was a good start at least I would say a good vision to educate people about UFO, ETs and Space. But heck.. nobody followed.. and NTV only produced crappy tv serials portraying garib nepali janatas and social issues. Looks like they never wanted to move forward. I used to watch Doctor Who, bishwa ghatna, gitanjali, Saturday 2PM hindi movie, etc. The like the ad about Surya cigarette about a guy in foreign land remembering about Nepal, Himalayas, Gorkha durbar etc. I think it was in English language. And yes, during the world cup about Surya cigarette "Ghama ko pailo kiran le - asha ko jyoti jagaunu cha" with man carrying two children in kharpan. About foreign ads, San Miguel black and white ad was seductive. I think, people later could not compete with Indian ads, and we have now more of indian ads than nepali ads. Most of them are really annoying.

Atom, I think you're right. Pratibha ko Dabali. Damn dude, you have a good memory. How did you remember that? LOL. Dipayal ko adhiktam taptram....Yeah I remember that. I think Dipayal was always top on the list. I used to tune out once I heard Dipyal's adhiktam taptram. Oh, I just remembered the name of the super-motorcycle show--Streethawk . There was that nerdy looking guy in that show. Madan Krishna and Hari Bansa did a few really good shows. But somehow in my mind all their skits kind of run into one other. Ramesh Budhathoki did quite a few that were good.

The most memorable images of the NTV back in the days were the cartoon that used to come right before the Baal Karyakram (Kids Show). Remember the cartoon that showed toons wearing all kinds of Neplease dresses representing different casts and visiting around kathmandu and dancing. I still remember the music of that cartoon. And I also remember the program in that baal karyakram about how to draw. Actually this program inspired me to be an artist. Because of this program i end up taking part in various art competition in my school days.
I remember Gillet World Sports which used to come right after the saturday movie. And i forget the name but there used to be a Japanese Kids show translated in Nepali which used to teach various ways to build a paper toys. And as Khairey stated, I rember that Nepali si-fi film too. It really captured my imagination. To bad no one followed up with that and we end up watching all kind of crappy stuff these days.
Serials like Chature ko Dau Page, Biman Chalak, I forget the name but there was one serial made by Tulsi Ghimire which featured Niruta Singh, Chakrabue (Juthe played by Ashok Sharma was the most memorable) and programs like Bishwo Ghatna, Aayam, Sunday Pop, were very interesting.
Does any one remembers there used to be a show called Yo Jadu Hoina ?Not to forget, my best part of growing up was watching Twakka-Tukka. I still remember that jock about Ramprasad ji getting hit by Narayan Tripathi on his talu :D. And another jock in which Ratan Subedi puts surti in his eye instead of his mouth. Not to mention the everlasting Ramayan and Mahabharat.
