Crisis cuts Nepal off from world: [India News]: New Delhi, Feb 1 : Nepal was virtually cut off from the world Tuesday with communication links snapping shortly after King Gyanendra sacked the government, assumed all executive powers and declared a state of emergency. While telephone connections were severed, television channels were only able to show feeds from Nepal-1, a channel telecast out of India. "We have been showing only Nepal-1, and that too we have not been able to update since morning," said a journalist of a prominent 24-hour news channel. Media companies were trying in vain to make contact with people in Nepal or fly their staff to Kathmandu to cover the Himalayan nation's worst crisis since the royal family massacre three years ago. A newspaper reporter said: "All flights to Nepal have been cancelled. We have been trying to get our people on the Royal Nepal flight, but were told only Nepalese citizens were allowed on it." Telephone landlines and mobile phone networks were apparently shut down in Kathmandu while international flights were turned back from Kathmandu airport. "We have been unable to make any calls or get in touch with anybody," said a TV reporter. Flights to Nepal were either returned or cancelled due to the closure of the country's airspace. With Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport coming under a security siege, airlines were forced to return or cancel their flights. Indian Airlines cancelled a flight after one of its flights was forced to return after being refused permission to land. A Jet Airways and an Air Sahara flight were also forced to return. Nepali news websites also went down although Indian officials said road links remained open.

I guess Maoists want people like Lokendra B Chand and Nayarayan Singh Pun to come to power when Ganendra puts somebody in charge of next govt. simply because Lokendra B. Chand the the team fullfilled so many of Maoists' demands. At this point CPN UML and it's UML team looks like an assh** more than Deuba.

There is lots of International politics involved here now. Some of the developement of the past. 1. Congress I coming to power in India. (Remember the problems between late King Birendra and Late Rajiv Gandi) 2. King G's cancelled trip to India , two times. 3. Closure of Tibetian center in Kathmandu a couple of days ago(probably to make China happy). 4. Sacking of Government by king G. 5. India's strong words for the sacking of government. 6. China said it is Nepal's internal matter. Clearly looks like King G is shifting towards China. It is going to be major tossup for the power between the regional superpowers as well as the lone superpower USA. There might be lots of foreign power struggles in the country. It may even involve military preemptive strike in the country. This is leading to a very dangerous road now.

Harikancha Well, even Ganendra he has countrol over KTM and some major urban centers. State of Emergency is under effect in only those urban centres where RNA and police has considerable control elsewhere there is no State of Emergency. Is he going to impose State of Emergency in Maoist areas or ?

Bhole babaji No matter with which ever country Ganendra might make a power deal, he is not in a position to cause any changes within the country with out dealing with the internal insurgency. He doesnt want to leave his absolute grip on his semi-rattled military and does not want to make major political deal the rebels. Basically he is badly stuck in the mud and all he can do is scare political party every now and then by showing off his demoralized military but cant scare away the Maoists. By the way, Indian Army went to Sri Lanka to defeat Tamil Tigers in the 80s and pulled out without success.

Nepal's king dismisses government, declares state of emergency Associated Press KATMANDU, Nepal ? King Gyanendra dismissed Nepal's government and declared a state of emergency today, saying leaders had failed to restore peace or hold elections. It was the second time he has taken direct control of the Himalayan kingdom in three years. Gyanendra denied his takeover was a coup, although soldiers surrounded the houses of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other government leaders. ADVERTISEMENT "We will oppose this step," Deuba, who was not allowed to leave his home, told reporters in brief comments. Armored military vehicles with mounted machine guns patrolled the streets of Katmandu, the capital, and phone lines in the city had been cut. Many flights into Katmandu were canceled although the airport remained open. Long lines quickly formed at grocery stores and gas stations, as worried residents stocked up on supplies. The move was criticized by India, Nepal's southern neighbor and close ally. "These developments constitute a serious setback to the cause of democracy in Nepal and cannot but be a cause of grave concern to India," the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement. India said the king's move had "violated" the Nepalese constitution, which enshrines a multiparty democracy alongside a constitutional monarchy. Democracy and royalty have long had a difficult relationship in Nepal. Gyanendra's late father, King Mahendra, established a rubber-stamp government and parliament but retained absolute power and outlawed political parties. The absolute monarchy ended when street demonstrations forced the king to give way to a multiparty government in 1990. Since then, Nepal has been wracked by a war against leftist rebels, often testy relations between the king and government, and the killing of 10 royal family members in a massacre. In an announcement on state-run television, the king accused the government of failing to conduct parliamentary elections and being unable restore peace in the country, which is beset by rebel violence. "A new Cabinet will be formed under my leadership," he said, accusing political parties of plunging the country into crisis. "This will restore peace and effective democracy in this country within the next three years." Later, state-run television reported that a state of emergency had been declared. "We are so confused. We don't know what is going on or what will happen," said Narayan Thapa, a government worker in Katmandu. "I am worried I can't reach my family on the phone." The monarch, who is also the supreme commander of the 78,000-member Royal Nepalese Army, said security forces would be given more power to maintain law and order. But he insisted human rights would be respected. Deuba also was fired as prime minister in October 2002, sparking mass street protests demanding the restoration of a democratically elected government. The king reinstated Deuba last year with the task of holding parliamentary elections by March 2005 and conducting peace talks with the Maoist rebels. Nepal has been in turmoil since Gyanendra, 55, suddenly assumed the crown in 2001 after his brother, King Birendra, was gunned down in a palace massacre apparently committed by Birendra's son, the crown prince, who also died. Ten members of the royal family were killed. Riots shook Katmandu after the killings. Soon after, fighting intensified between government forces and the rebels, who control large parts of Nepal's countryside. The rebels, who draw inspiration from the late Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, have been trying since 1996 to overthrow the government and establish a socialist state. They have refused the government's invitation to come into the mainstream of Nepalese politics and end the violence. More than 10,500 people have died since the fighting began. www.houstonchronicle.com
